Though the longest-lived and most wealthy of the Hellenistic "Big 3", the Ptolemaic rulers in Egypt have never really held the distinction as a major military player in the violent struggles of the Hellenistic period, instead often seen as decadent and lazy as per the writings of those like Polybius. Dr. Paul Johstono joins us to discuss his new book “The Army of Ptolemaic Egypt, 323-204 BC: An Institutional and Operational History”, which seeks to challenge this claim and reassert the role of the Ptolemaic kingdom as a significant military force in the Mediterranean, capable of meeting the demands of maintaining a large land and sea empire amidst powerful rivals and often inhospitable environments.

My favorite part from Johstono’s book was when the Ptolemies hired as military settlers Iapygians from Italy. The Ptolemies really did attract people from everywhere. Given enough money and transportation they would’ve hired bureaucrats from freaking China

Amazing video, as usual. FYI, "Rome: Total War" is indeed an awesome game, and probably a massive driver for many history geeks, myself included. However, it is even more awesome to play the (free) total conversion mod, "Europa Barbarorum", both I and II. Truly a masterpiece of a mod, and a testament of how high quality and accurate free, open source games can be.

Actually, Dr. Johstono was a consultant for EBII’s development, and it is indeed a good mod. I also have been playing with the Divide et Impera mod for Rome: Total War 2, and it is of similar quality

@@HellenisticAgePodcast Dang. I'm gonna go install DEI for Rome II. Have you played Imperator? It's the Paradox GS title. I'm normally an EU4/Vic2 strategy gamer, but the TW games were what I grew up with, and sometimes the military aspect is really cool. Especially when individual battles could be "all-in" situations for a nation. More often than in modern warfare. That's why I love TW historical titles as well.

But the day a game manages to combine TW with Imperator, that's when the plot of "Surrogates" will become reality! 😅

Before playing RTW: haha Lorica Segmentata Romans go brrr during the first Punic War After playing RTW: wait, the Romans initially used chainmail and pectoral armor Polybian troops? After playing Europa Barbarorum: wait, there were hoplite style Camillan troops before that? After playing Europa Barbarorum II: wait, Roman generals needed to have legal Imperium to lead armies or else they suffer severe consequences?

I mean if Sosibios and Agathokles had just let Arsinoe III live and be regent for her young son the dynasty would most likely not have become so destabilized so suddenly. Who knows what could have happened in the next century without that whole shitshow.

Recent climate investigations sugest droughts caused by vulcano activity might have contributed heavily to weaken hellenistic states, especially Seleucid and Ptolemaic empires, wich coupled with continuous war and some internal strife (much of it caused by climate instability), in time, made these states weak and ripe for the taking.
