Great Video, thanks. I have a 2005 Grand Prix GT with a 3.8 V6. I need to replace the Sway Bar bushings, do you know what size they would be? The one that comes up the most is the 34mm which is the largest. Looks about right from your video. My mechanic said he may have to measure it but I'm in total disbelief that there is not a standard diameter sway bar on a 2005 GT. Do you know? Thanks!

Thanks for the comment...appreciate it. As for your question, unfortunately, It has to be measured. The problem (maybe in a good way) is that GM offered different suspension packages for the Grand Prix through all year ranges. So because of this, it can range from 20mm (which I think is some base models and fleet cars) to 30, 31, 32 mm. I can never get a full list of which car and suspension package got what, as it seems some dealers in some regions had various packages and options across North America. The only way to know for sure is to measure it. Sucks, I know. Thanks for watching too!

I just purchased a 2007 grand prix base. I'm getting a clunky noise and feeling in the steering. From what I've read it can be the intermediate steering shaft. There is also a clunking coming from the suspension however the car was fully inspected at a gm dealer where the car was serviced and given a clean bill of health. Any thoughts?

That is tricky to say from here, because there is a dozen things that can cause a clunking....everything from engine mounts, to struts, springs, strut tower mounts, tie rods, stabilizer, stabilizer links, control arms, ball joints, trailing arms, etc. And that I cannot answer directly from here. Does it sound like it is coming from the front or rear of the car? Does it happen in a straight line, or when going around a corner? Maybe I can help narrow it down a bit.

@@NexusAuto thank you for responding. According to my research it seems there was a technical service bulletin on the intermediate steering shaft on these cars. The dealer I brought it to showed me the underbody and the suspension components and they checked out. What I did notice under the hood the top of the strut mounts were rusty. The sounds seem to be coming from the lower left front turning at low speeds. There is also a noise coming from the rear as well.

@@paulfarber701 no problem at all. I didn't know about the TSB on the steering shaft. That's good to know, actually. Also, good news on the suspension components. Did he check the outer tie rods for any play in them? While there can be a few causes, normally low speed turning noise can indicate a bad outer tie rod. That is normally my first go-to when there is a low speed turning noise.

@@NexusAuto after working on the car today replacing the transmission cooler lines and fittings we noticed the strut mounts are rusted on both sides.
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulfarber701 that could be the cause, but it could be other things too. Have you tried turning the wheels side to side (almost all the way end to end) and see if the noise happens when the car is stationary as well?

I like your W-Body videos! You deserve more views for sure. I own the '00 Impala with a nicely modified L67 swap and a '04 GP GTP in virgin condition. Just doing some suspension homework and I would like to share a nice technical article with you as I pass on by. www.getoverkilled.ca/wbodytech.html

Thanks for the awesome comment and the support, appreciate it! You have a couple of awesome W Body cars there. Hope the videos help out! I have heard of overkill many times on GP articles, but I have not seen any write ups like this. It is fantastic. Thanks for sharing. i will keep that in my files for sure!

I hit a curb not too long ago and now my rear tire is bent and my car keeps drifting to the left
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there is many things that can go wrong. Just to list a few -Rim is now really bent and causing the car to drift -Wheel has become out of balance -Alignment was thrown off with the hit -Damage to the wheel bearing -Damaged Tie Rod (inner or outer, but most likely outer) -Depending how hard the hit was, the strut could have become bent -The hit could have damaged the strut tower mount -Ball joint could have been damaged -Lower control arm could have been bent -CV Shaft could have been damaged The crappy part is that it is impossible to tell what is wrong without being there to test. But I would start with having the wheels checked. If the drifting started after hitting the curb, the most common problem would be something in the wheel. Check wheel balance and have it aligned. Most times, if the shop cannot align the car, they will test and see what component has gone bad.

hello again nexus, one question. do you have any idea why i'm having a play on my steering wheel? and what could be causing it? im thinking it could be the rack and pinion joint. what do you think?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James. There can be a few causes. It can be play in the steering shaft, it can be the rack and pinion joint or the rack itself, it can even be severely worn tie rods, possibly ball joints. Best thing to do is the raise of the car, support on jack stands, and have someone turn the wheel while you investigate and see where the play is. tbh, I normally star with the outer tie rods. it is the most common part to fail, and can definitely give some play in the steering wheel, but it can be any of the stuff mentioned above. depends on how play is there too.

I know this is an older video. I recently changed my 02 grand prix rear struts and now my ride height is off. The rear driver side sits somewhere between 1" to 2" higher than the passenger side. Do you have any advice on a solution?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
For sure. I have two things to check generally, off the top of my head. First, recheck all components with the rear struts, including the springs and the mounts. Make sure nothing had shifted or is out of place. Next, get something to measure (measuring tape, ruler, etc) and measure the load on the spring. I have seen an instance where one spring was stiffer than the other, and therefore, one side drooped a bit. After a few days it settled, and everything was fine. If all that is good, try this next (and may want to do it for both sides, just in case) 1. Jack up the whole rear end of the car, and support on jacks. 2. Loosen the upper bolts on each strut, doing one side at a time. Dont remove them, just loosen them as much as possible. This should cause the suspension to hang a bit. 3. Use the jack, and raise each wheel by jacking at the bottom of the knuckle. Raise it until the suspension is 'loaded', as in, the springs are starting to compress a bit. But no need to compress them. Just enough. 4. Retighten the upper bolts. 5. Lower car and see if the ride height has improved. If it is not dangerously high, do the first couple of things first. Sometimes, the suspension needs to settle. Hope this helps

Could it possibly be that the end link was mounted to the wrong side of the strut? Being theres 2 sides to the end link mounting bracket
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
@@boprop77 It is possible. Off memory, I dont think the link would reach to the both sides of the bracket, but I could be wrong on that one for sure. It is worth looking at as well. If it is mounted incorrectly, it could definitely push up on the suspension. If you think that is a possibility, check it right away. If that is the case, then the weight of the car is sitting on that link and related items, like the bushings.
