5:07 - beautiful shape ! This Christmas holiday I'll make a sturdy bench for my small Record lathe that I bought earlier this year. Then I'll teach myself to use it and I too can make good handles like this for my tools. And I can learn to make chairs, and tables with turned legs, and .... I'm looking forward to next year !

Nice video, it's a carving in-cannel gouge you made. the exact shape but around 17 to 20 inch long, a woodturning gouge is used by the professional turners of Pakistan. this in-cannel gouge is the only tool these turners use, from start to finish. from rounding to finish piece . after they finish honing the edge, they take a round steel bar 3 to 4 mm thick, like a screwdriver can also be used. they press the edge with it, firmly and even pressure of hand, from the outside of the bevel edge, from one end to the other. pressing the steel bar on the edge, from outside at a 45 angle. this technique will bend the burr of edge inwards and will cut wood like butter. i haven't seen any such gouge used by western turners till now. I'm a member of many woodturning groups on facebook. hope you find this interesting .. lolls

Comment and question. First it is so nice to see you settled in the new place and making videos again. Question: what is the benefit of having the bevel on the inside? My gouges have the bevel on the outside and I put a small secondary bevel on the inside to make it stronger.

As you were grinding the inside bevel, you were cooling the blade in water. Since you were going to reharden and temper the blade, why was the cooling necessary?
@mikeyutube
@mikeyutube 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same then realised it was probably getting too hot to handle.
@StavrosGakos
@StavrosGakos 3 жыл бұрын
I make cooling always because i don't want to burn the cutting edge. I know that some people say that it doesn't matter before hardening, but i don't. If you burn the edge the steel is not homogeneous. Normalizing can repair it but not with every kind of steel. That's why i am careful. Secondly the burned edge makes the whole work uncomfortable :)

Those intending to follow this example - be careful, and check before you invest a lot of time. Some chisels are made with applied steel; in an axe the steel is inserted between the cheeks, so that it forms the cutting edge. In a chisel (and older plane blade) the steel is laminated onto the face. The rest of the tool is soft iron. IF THIS technique is used for a gouge, only the original edge (be it incannel or outcannel) can be hardened. You CANNOT cannot repurpose it. (The Berg in the video appears to be hardenable steel throughout)

@StavrosGakos 3 жыл бұрын

this is not adviced to do to old tools. If it's hand forged, so will it only have steel on one side. + grinding away that mutch material puts the tool at risk of getting blued. Bluing happens when the metal gets heated up to a point where the hardening of the steel goes away. thus making the tool incapable to hold an edge. Knowledge from a blacksmith.
