I recently started painting with oil and cold wax thanks to your inspiring videos. I'm having a lot of fun with this. I'm a senior and enjoy part time fine art courses at our local college. Presently I'm taking a mixed media course. For one of my projects, I used oil and cold wax on Arches oil paper, a first for me. Great paper! Great media!!! I love the feel of application. My piece is small. I used a colour shaper. I saw where you randomly tore a piece of paper and used it to mono print, so I did that. What a great way to create repetition in a composition. I used the same piece to mono print, trace around and paint the shape and or outline and create a halo effect around it. Creating different similarities. Thanks for the great videos!!!

This is a new medium for me. So far, I love the silicon spreaders and serrated spatulas I've found - but I've also had fun with gathering items on my desert walks: dried cholla branches, palm frond stems (those gnarly thorns on the edges make great mark making!), feathers, and a leg bone from some unfortunate critter-turned-food source (yuck, I know but it was very old and completely dried - and yes, I use gloves...). I have found that using organic tools found while taking a head clearing, meditative walk helps free me for what I put down on panel or paper. I love the whole intuitive process. So far, it's become a winding down tool for me (I still teach full time so quiet time after being with 31 energetic 9-10 yr olds and a dozen cranky adults is essential!). Best "therapy" ever! I try not to analyze at this point but just loosen up and get familiar/proficient with the wax, oils, and other tools. Thank you, Pam, for always being so incredibly generous and inspiring for all of us

Hi Pam. Another great video, can’t wait to see the follow up. A couple of tools I love with cwm, my fingers and those heavy duty claw shaped scrapers that rip through layers of old cold wax. Sometimes I use them to make lines and sometimes I use them over the whole painting to reveal a beautiful surface that I am then unable to figure out where to go next! If I am using inks to make an undersurface I recently used reeds from my garden. I used the rounded top and it gave me some unpredictable lines. I can only use each reed once before it falls apart but it was fun to play with and made me think that there must be other interesting things to use from outside.

Thank you for the fabulous video. I love to use a scalpel with a rounded blade for scraping, also a dentist tool for fine lines. But the tool I still love best is a traditional good quality synthetic brush. When used with oil, cold wax and some medium it as a most luscious and sensual feel.

Pamela Caughey Art I didn’t want to scavenge from a construction site thinking this would probably be illegal but I did ask a fire department friend to get me a little but ended up with some not so useful yellow caution police plastic tape. Then a fellow artist, Sandy Komst from PEI, charmed an actual construction worker at. Site she came across to giving her a little and she generously shared her “catch” with me. Since then it’s been in my toy box and gets carefully treated with love. Still checking each construction site I come across for replenishment but no luck so far.

Great video Pamela! Curious to see the next stage. My favorite tool at this moment is all kinds of waxy papers. I like how it removes the brush strokes, takes your hand out....
@PamelaCaughey

Linda - so are you saying you put the paint on to the wax paper, and apply with the paper, or something else like monoprinting? I also love these types of non-absorbant papers - great for transferring paint but if you are using paper as a brush, then I will have to try that too! Thanks! :)
@LindaCoppens
@LindaCoppens 5 жыл бұрын
Often I use the wax paper to take off the paint I painted with a brush, but I also use it to put paint on it and then press onto the canvas or panel. So I use it more like monoprinting. But that’s not a bad idea, put paint on the wax paper and paint with that!

What fun! I don’t have space inside to work large like that currently, but now want to figure a way to do so. My favorite tool is a spray bottle filled with water, ink, or high flow acrylics. Thanks for doing a video on acrylic paint.

Tx Pam for another great video! I really enjoy your online course! One of my favorite tools is the silicone brush. I also like to use found objects, like twigs, small branches etc. Lynn Fournier

Hi Lynn - Great to hear from you here! I only wish they didn't call the silicone brush a silicone brush. In my live workshops, people show up with silicone basting brushes - haha - thought they can be used (and work exceptionally well with encaustic monoprinting), they are not quite as effective with the stiffer cwm/oils! But, yes, the actual silicone "brushes", with the firm, flat edge - those will always be my absolute favorite! Thanks for your comment ;)!!

My favorite tool is the bamboo pen I made from freshly cut bamboo. We made the pen in a class I took in Ireland. Apparently, bamboo grows in my instructor’s yard in County Donegal. I use it with watercolors. I did not get the tip as pointed as the one I bought but the feathery end makes interesting effects.

Thanks JoAnne - this is really good to know! While we have no naturally growing bamboo here in Montana ;) - I'm sure I can find some and play around with it! :)

Pamela Caughey Art Yes. You should. I went to Ireland in July and the pen was still green. We used it with ink. It’s now hardened so resembles the one I had bought a few years ago, except for the tip. None of us were too skilled in sawing bamboo. 😂. Except for the instructor, Michael Doherty, of course.

Hi Mimi - that sounds awesome. I do find myself in the child toy section at the thrift store ever since I saw Paula Roland (master of encaustic monoprinting) demonstrating a child's toy car on the hot metal plate with wax - the little wheels made incredible marks! Thanks for sharing this! I"m getting so many great ideas from all of you - YAY! :)

This looks like so much fun. Right now, I am mark making on smaller pieces. I would really love the space and excuse to make large pieces like you. I feel that size calling to me. The brown paper you're using is called masking paper. It's used with masking tape on a tool called a hand masker. Painters use it to cover windows, trim and any services they wish to keep clean.

Hi Pamela, I've just watched this wonderful video and been inspired to go to larger works. You are a born motivator! I use a range of the usual tools ( and then have lots to clean up, including my fingers!) my favourite tool right now is an old fashioned nib pen dipped in Aero Color. Once dry the beautiful marks and drips show through later layers. I've also screwed up block chocolate paper which makes unexpected marks. I also close my eyes sometimes when making marks with my weaker hand... it's such a different result. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hey Patricia! How wonderful to hear from you! I miss you! Given you live in NZ - your tools sound very different and intriguing to me - and unfamiliar! Like, what is Aero Color? And, "Block Chocolate paper"? Hmm.....I am soon going to do a video on a painting using wrappers from lots of different kinds of chocolate. Who says you can't have your chocolate and eat it, too? Much love - miss you! Happy Painting!!

@@PamelaCaughey I just use the plastic ones that are about 6" long. They actually hold quite a bit of paint (but are best when working smaller).
