Conducted another bell test today. This is in a 14-story apartment building (13 regular floors plus a penthouse). The system is a Siemens FireFinder with EVAC. The common areas (major rooms, hallways, and stairwells) have speaker/strobes and the apartments have sounder/smokes and heat detectors in them. There are some apartments that also have remote strobes for the hearing impaired. There are no speakers in the apartments. With the exception of studio apartments, when one apartment smoke detector is triggered, it sends a supervisory signal to the FACP. Should a second detector in that apartment activate, it initiates an alarm condition. If a heat detector activates, it automatically triggers an alarm condition. When an alarm condition is received, the floor where the alarm originated, the floor above, the floor below, and both stairwells play the slow whoop alarm tone and the apartment sounder/smokes on the floors in alarm activate as well. All other floors play the Alert message over the speakers and the sounder/smokes remain silent. All strobe lights activate regardless of what tone/message is playing. You'll notice I encounter a couple of confused residents while making my rounds, as they had activated strobe lights in their apartments and no advance notice was given about any testing taking place. I checked floors 1-5, my colleague checked the penthouse and floors 6-12, and a building maintenance employee checked the ground floor. This is the most complex EVAC system I've come across yet, as all the others have the entire building sounding the alarm tone/message at once, not in a phased manner. Neat!
UPDATE: as of 2022, this system has been replaced with a Honeywell 6820EVS.

Before Covid when I was working in the office at a different job, a lady I rode the bus into work has a job with the health system and her office is in the one building in my town which is around 70 floors and she said once a year they do a mass evacuation drill she told me it takes 2 hours to clear the building. I laughed and said "A lot of good 2 hours will due you in a fast spreading fire"

It's actually typical of stairwells to have their own dedicated circuits. I assume if there's an alarm condition then they always play the slow whoop tone throughout the whole stairwell (I'm not sure if the whole building is playing the Alert message, which would only happen if it's manually initiated at the panel).

From my understanding, high rises (as well as other buildings where an immediate full evacuation when an alarm is activated isn’t ideal) will have the stairwells be on separate NACs from the hallways and rooms if applicable

Definitely an interesting system, Cerberus Pyrotronics/Siemens/Faraday systems are quite rare to find these days. Never heard that message either. I see the smoke detectors are unusually mounted on the wall instead of the ceiling, along with the one pull station at 2:08 being numbered "1" for some reason. 2:33 Seriously? TWO speaker/strobes within several FEET of each other!? Is that REALLY necessary?
@weatherdan882002
@weatherdan882002 3 жыл бұрын
The only places the detectors are mounted on the ceiling are on the first floor. IDK why they slapped a 1 on that pull station. The one at the opposite end of the hall has a 2 on it, but those are the only pulls that are labeled like that. And yeah, those last two speaker/strobes are kind of close. There's another pair at the opposite end of the building that are the same way.

Thank you. I understand about the privacy issue I used to live in Clifton Park and Malta 14 story buildings are rare The senior high-rise is the only thing that I can think of that was that tall, but even those are not that tall Cayuga is 11, mcdonald's is 11, I think, as is Watervliet towers Not many high-rise buildings in the capital district The silo in Troy, I think that one is 12 or 13 I know Albany and schenectady have a few, but not farmilar with them I really wish I could find a way to get a monitor site on top of bald mountain in Troy I tested my equipment up there at WNYT site and the reception was incredible I got all the way to plattsburgh and Cobelskill, Albany, Saratoga, Scotia It is the perfect spot, but they would not rent me space Neither would the phone company that had a tower, or National Grid who has the 3rd tower up there I tried everything but no one wanted to help I live in Pennsylvania, and down here we have ham radio groups and operators and Businesses, like bed and breakfast that host railfan sites Lots of people who love trains here Mechanicville, there was a restaurant I used to go to and I tried to get them to put up an active display to get all the railfans who come to town to want to frequent their business, but they didn't want to do it. I miss the trains up there Mechanicville was a great city to watch the trains all day long

How does the speaker strobe in the stairs and a hallway that has a different voice evac
@weatherdan882002
@weatherdan882002 Жыл бұрын
The system has two channels for the voice evac; one channel plays the evac tone to the evac floors and the stairways, the other channel plays the alert tone/message to the rest of the building.

Do they have 2 panels? I didn't know mixing messages was possible
@weatherdan882002
@weatherdan882002 2 жыл бұрын
It's all one panel, but the audio has two channels. One channel plays the EVAC tone, the other plays the alert tone/message. This is most common in high-rises where staged evacuation protocols are in place, whereas other buildings that just need voice capability usually have only one audio channel to play the EVAC tone or make a page announcement.

@@weatherdan882002 Thank you so much for the quick response. Do you know which are the inaccuracies on that video? I have found a video of the 9/11 where I can listen to this exact same tone (inside the WTC 1 lobby), but I couldn't listen to the voice evacuation like this one. The one used in the WTC 7 (Firecom 8500) seems pretty right because there's another video where the fire alarms are pretty clear. Best regards.

@@leandrootouzbirian8786 The first was that pre-1993 "system" was actually made of three systems - one for pull stations, one for smoke detectors and one for sprinklers. The pull stations and the PA system were on the same system and it was manufactured by American Multiplex Systems. I believe it did the slow whoop tone, but not the slow whoop tone heard in that video. The second is that the video says that the new system played a message three times in addition to the slow whoop tone. This is not true, as there were no pre-recorded messages played in the complex. All messages were broadcast live from the fire command centers. In addition, with the exception of WTC 7, the tones had to be manually activated by building personnel; they would not automatically sound when a pull station or smoke detector was activated (the exception being the original system which would broadcast the alarm tone to the floor of activation if no one responded to a pull station activation within 20 seconds). Third, it says the system for the complex covered buildings 1, 2, 4, 5, & 6. Building 6 was not covered under the original or the replacement fire alarm systems; they only covered buildings 1, 2, 4, and 5 as well as the concourse and sub-basement levels. All the information regarding building 7 is correct as well as the fact that tenants had the option to install their own fire alarm systems which were monitored by the main building system. Let me know if you have any other questions!
