Hi John, well I'm a Red from Whalley Range, bit younger than you - lived almost exactly half way between Utd and City. Had loads of mates who were/are Blues and for me too, Maine Rd will always be City's spiritual home. Went to dozens of games there; derbies, City games, semi-finals, even a B International. There seemed to be a testimonial every season too in the 70's and 80's! And like you, I enjoyed (United's) Premier League success, but wouldn't swap my days following them in the 70's and 80's for those of the 90's and the noughties. Best of times!

Yes indeed,the effin Ball is ridiculous now..All it has done has allowed the game to appear so much faster(so it must be better!!) No football is not just about Speed(which is a facet that certainly helps) but is meant to be about Skill,being able to tackle hard,but well &being able to handle the opposition doing the same.. Totally agree with you. I'm a Spanish criminal lawyer. I lived in London. I love your country, your history (I am able to say all Prime Minister in the last century) and your football. In those times you can remember the line-up of your favourite team, and hardly ever changed. @@peterflynn7083 63-000 to be precise. The north stand was a terrace in those days, a year later in 1972 they put seats in it and the capacity was reduced to 52 -000. Some great memories of my time on the Kippax. That City team should have won the title that season. With 9 games to go we were 6 points clear,in those days it was only 2 points for a win. Only 4 of the last 9 games were won and we ended up 4th on goal difference, only 1 point behind Derby who were champions. Think the signing of Rodney Marsh around April time messed up the rhythm of the team.

That's right Wayne. They were actually five points clear and had played a game more than their rivals I think. Even so, they should have won the league that season. There is no doubt that the Marsh signing upset the balance of the side and they lost a game or two that should not have been lost. Of course it was United who were five points clear at the end of 1971. I always recall Malcolm Allison in his Daily Express column predicting that they would fall away in the new year. Malcolm was certainly right about they lost about seven games on the trot in the new year and eventually finished eighth in the table. Malcom was though wrong to sign Marsh at the time he did. He should have waited until the season ended.

@@anthonyquinn6009 even Marsh himself admits his arrival cost the league title. As Mike Summerbee said a few years later. Wyn Davies was with us then ,a tremendous centre forward who caused all sorts of problems for opposition defences, and was a great foil for Franny, who fed off his knock -ons and flick- ons, most of his 33 goals he scored that way, then the arrival of Marsh changed everything, with all the attacking play going through him, a quick attacking team suddenly became slow and laboured. Marshes signing came at the worse possible time, and certainly was a contributing factor in not winning the title that year.

@@onthekippaxsince75 Indeed, Marsh himself admitted his arrival cost City the Championship in 1972. It was a bad move by Malcolm Allison buying him when he did. In fairness though, Malcolm did more right than wrong things for City. The sale of Davies early the following season was perhaps equally as controversial. Especially as he was sold to United. However, in his book 'Colours Of My Life' Malcolm states that he had to sell a couple of players who were "mixing it up in the dressing room". He states that he was told of this by Francis Lee. Malcolm would not name the players in his book as "they were both still playing". I cannot help but think that Davies was one of the players he was alluding to.

@@Bazooka183 Banks had food poisoning so Ramsey had no choice. In the biography of Sir Alf written a few years ago players who played in that game expressed surprise Bonetti was picked over Stepney..

@@dlamiss Yep, I stand corrected. I should have stated that Ramseys biggest mistake was substituting Bobby Charlton whilst in the ascendancy against the West Germans. I still stand in my belief though, that neither Stepney or Bonetti were international class. A pity, because there were some solid and exciting players in the England squad, that were arguably an improvement on the lads of 66, if at all possible. The likes of Labone, Cooper and Franny Lee spring to mind. Apart from our disappointment at losing in the QF, I still look back very fondly on the 1970 World Cup,and some of the great players like Pele, Muller, Riva and Jairzinho to name but a few......who graced that tournament 😁😉👍

@Tavy, that's a bit harsh, Franny Lee was a fantastic player, and was a real thorn in the side of united in those days, he always played well against them, maybe that's why you dislike him so much? Tribal loyalties are definitely clouding your judgement. His hatrick in 1970 at the swamp contained no penalties, if we're talking divers, Ashley Young, remember him? How many penalties have the rags had this season? A ridiculous amount, last night's game proves they can't win a football match without being awarded them.
