068 Router plane rescue

Some tools deserve for the rescue. Even when the tool is not so useful, it can give you the lesson and that's the goal in that project.
I've always wondered how that high angle routers works (60 degrees), but i've never had a chance to check it. Since i got that plane i felt temted to rescue it and lern my lesson. I stated the plane is good only for shallow dados or tenons cheeks in hard wood, but it's not comfortable to use - need to keep an eye on the the same level to see the iron or work "blind". I'm gonna keep it as a comparmison to other router planes, and for a beauty of it :)
As the iron i used an old broken paring chisel made by WARD. I noticed that the tang is almost the same hard as the edge, so it will be enough for this job. I cutted the tang and regrind the bevel without loosing hardness.
Oh, the wood i used was boxwood, but you probably know it ;)
I've experimented with lighting (less light), so the video looks a little bit different. What do you thik about it?

Thanks for the info! I often do fairly deep guitar cavities with my Record 71 router plane, and was thinking about building something like this with a high angle, but I guess I'll stick to the Record for the time being.

It's a brilliant idea to show the workpiece every now and then, and turn it around in front of the camera, so that we can see it from all perspectives.

I found 50 to 55 degrees works well in hardwood, but as you say, not so good in most softwoods.

I was trying to make them in many of my videos (subtitles in stages on the timeline) but it takes me too much time. To be honest, most people don't read them and ask my about things, that i wrote about. Cheers

@@StavrosGakos it's amazing the number of times I see videos with great captions, where people ask questions covered in the captions. I suspect many people don't know they exist. If you were to use captions in future, a very brief "fixed" caption (not using youtube's caption facility I mean, so edited into the video) at the start that said "turn on captions for detailed infornation" or something like that, it would perhaps prompt people to utilise them. The other issue I regularly see, is people asking questions about something that is covered either in the description or a pinned post!

Hi, Stravos! Long time viewer, first time commenter. You know, I have seen you make so many wedges over the years. While watching this video I thought that maybe you could make a molding plane that cut the recess and curve at the top of the wedge. Personally, I would love to see what you come up with (and watch you make it). It might interest you as you seem to enjoy making tools that help you make tools.

Hi Stavros, I like the reduced lighting. Have you tried experimenting with altering your camera's white balance or with restrained colour grading of your film? Some adjustment of the tone would I think further increase the great quality of your video production. Czesc, tak jak kolega napisał - planemaking floats. Pod tym hasłem znajdziesz najwięcej informacji na ich temat. Wystarczy płaskownik ze stali wysokowęglowej, dostaniesz bez problemu w sklepach z materiałami do budowy noży. Pozdrawiam

Dziękuję serdecznie! Nigdy nie jest za późno na obcowanie z obcym językiem. Proszę spróbować korzystać z tłumacza google. Wystarczy skopiować tekst i wkleić do tłumacza, wtedy wszystko będzie jasne:) Opisywanie filmów w dwóch językach było dla mnie utrudnieniem dlatego z niego zrezygnowałem. Mam nadzieję, że pomysł z tłumaczem będzie dla Pana wygodny. Pozdrawiam

What’s the name of those rasp-like tools you use to make the edges of the blade slot? It looks like a rasp/saw or a machine shop broach. But one cutter is on the edge, other is on the side. I love your work! Congrats!

Where do you get your boxwood? And how do you keep it from cracking? I removed a boxwood bush at my house and the wood cracked terribly despite me sealing the ends.

Hey, mainly from olx dot pl. I keep it in dark and windy place, but sometimes big pieces gets one big crack. Small diameters never. Cheers

@@StavrosGakos After I made the comment, I remembered that I saved a bunch of huckleberry wood. Chunks of 7inch diameter. It should work. I made a knife handle from some years ago. It was so hard that an 80grit belt polished the wood before the blank face was flattened. Have a good one!
