Few aircraft elicit such reverence and respect as those that could be counted on to respond at a moment's notice when a downed aviator or embattled ground unit cried for help. In the Vietnam conflict, the aircraft that provided hours of on-station time with dozens of weapons stations and was responsible for saving hundreds of lives was none other than the venerable Douglas A-1 Skyraider.
On this episode, former U.S. Air Force captain George Marrett joins us to cover the usual 'aircraft series' topics and goes deep on the Skyraider's "Sandy" mission in Vietnam, having flown nearly 200 such missions himself. George's extensive experiences are expertly captured in his many books on everything from the Sandy missions to test piloting and even Howard Hughes, which was adapted for the feature film, The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Learn more about the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles, CA here: www.ewarbirds.org/index.shtml
Mr. Paul Wood of the Warbird Heritage Foundation returns this week as guest co-host to describe flying his Skyraider and helps answer listener questions on rain intrusion in the cockpit, FOD concerns for jet engines, and service wings insignia.
Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell. Artwork by Janek Krause. This episode was produced by our friends at the MuscleCarPlace Podcast Network.

I could listen for hours to the stories from these old war vets. The first time I became aware of the Skyraider was the movie "Flight of the Intruder". Even then I could see how this was the influence to the A-10.

Sort of. The head designer had his engineers listen to Hans Rudel, a Luftwaffe Ju-87 Stuka and FW-190 pilot. He was the premiere ground attack/ close air support pilot in WWII . (He was also a full fledged Nazi fascist, a bit of a psycho that loved battle and never gave up.) The A-7 Corsair was the intended replacement of the A-1. The A-10 came along afterwards and was designed primarily as an anti tank plane for Europe.

Thank you, good memories for me reflecting on my father (Navy, A1 pilot) who served at the same time as George and went to Hughes at the same time, I am sure they rubbed elbows one time or two...but there is something about Skyraiders that is so true with George, When they say, "Let me tell you something", I knew the next hour or two of my life was listening to my father, and now George...good memories listening to George, and thank you for doing this interview.

My dad served aboard a carrier in the 1960s, Aviation Boatswain's Mate working catapults and arresting gear. He told me at night in the pitch dark he would watch Skyraiders coming in to land and he could see the blue glow from the exhaust ring as they approached.

Man, it seems wild that the Air Force moved someone so incredibly over qualified to fly a prop driven tail dragger. Then you listen to how complex (not that I thought it was easy to begin with) the mission was and you realize it required the absolute best of us to do. It's humbling.

Tracy Some Phantom pilots chose the A-1. It was a far more dangerous and demanding mission than boom and zoom with a jet. The OV-10 guys had just as much to deal with with far less protection than the A-1 had.

Having flown T28s at VT2 and seen a couple of S. Vietnam pilots torque roll in, when I flew the Skyraider I was always very aware of the torque..right rudder would keep you out of trouble...interestingly enough, when flying A4s you could almost keep your feet on the floor and for normal flight rudder was not a big deal....in the Skyraider or the Trojan coming into a place that did not see recips a lot, we use to press the primer to scare hell out of the line boys

Thank you for another great podcast! Doing a bit of research online of Mr Marrett. Some pictures of George Marrett and his A-1J 063 “The Hasler” and “Sock It To Em” A-1J 029 along with others. Here is some additional links to A-1 site. Lots of great info :) Mr Marrett, if you read this, thank you! Thank you for a life time of service, a life time of excellence. I have several thousand hours flying at an airline. When I first started flying in the Delta connection system, I’d say about 50% of the captains I flew with were Vietnam vets. We had quite a verity of pilots that flew everything from A-1’s to B-52’s. I’ve come to believe the “greatest generation title also includes the Vietnam warriors. One man that stands out in my immediate memory was Colonel Pat Sheldon. He flew 285 combat missions. He was absolutely wonderful to fly with. Always confident, competent, competitive and yet very kind and humble. He taught me a lesson on how to accept impending death, he was always teaching by example. I had just lost my medial and was feeling sorry for myself when I was told Pat had retired due to a medical issue. I called him and said, Pat, I know you were having neck problems… he had ejected twice during the war and broken his neck in one of those ejections. Anyway he said, no Bret I have a rare form of ALS. I said, ok, what does that mean? He said I’m going to die in fairly short order. He then went on to comfort me as he explained how he was at peace and grateful for the life he was given. Well… I ramble on far too much. www.google.com/amp/s/www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/springfield-va/patrick-skeldon-6097220

Awesome episode as always. I was wondering, given the talk about the escape systems, if you might do an episode talking to and about some of the people who have used them in the past. It would be a nice companion to the more technical talk on ejection seats you did early on and be able to include other systems and events other than fast jet ejection such as ground egress from heavies and choppers. Thank you for all the wonderful content

First off, happy birthday Vincent! If I can add to this podcast, I believe that all the A-1's used by the USAF were taken out of moth balls and were previously Navy aircraft. Also I think I remember correctly that the A-1 was known to be able to carry more ordinance than a B-17. Also, please if you haven't already, check out the best magazine in existence. Its called Warbird Digest. Expensive but some of the best reading available.

I have a 1/48 scale model kit from Tamiya here that features his airplane’s markings... now I have a renewed interest in building it after knowing his personal accounts

Was waiting for an A-1 piece. One thing he kept mentioning was it was a low, slow flyer and you never need the speed brakes. If you go back before Vietnam and the original design criteria calling for a dive bombing capability it would exceed design speed limits very fast without the 3 big brakes. As for altitude, when the USAF was parading the B-36 bomber around the world, a Navy commander had a flight of A-1’s intercept the B-36 at 32k’ while it entered US airspace off California. The A-1’s made diving passes from 36k’! Of course they could only make one pass. They also trained for Alpha Strikes with mixed flights of F-4U Corsairs making rocket attacks from 20k’, followed by A-1’s dive bombing from 30k’ + and then F-9 Cougars finishing off with guns. The dive from from 30k’ took so long that the pilots said they didn’t really get serious about the lineup until 10k’. Vincent, when you complete the Century Series series, how about the early jets? F-2’s , F-3’s, F-4D Skyrays, F-7s, F-9’s, etc. I know some of your previous guests have mentioned flying those. I’m sure there are some great stories from those pioneers. Thanks!
