I've seen this clip many times, I keep coming back to it and honestly Unitas, I don't care if it was football or a military man in a world war, this guy was something else. An incomparable leader of men, tremendous guts, simply ice cold fearless! So glad I was keeping up with football when he was playing. Toughest QB that ever played the game, NO ONE IS IN HIS LEAGUE!!!

Unitas called his own plays and made his own game plan. He was not protected from late hits by any rule. His receivers did not wear "sticky gloves. His receivers were not protected by rules against contact by defenders. You can't say that about ANY QB of the last 35 or so years. The game has been cheapened.

Bullshit. Sure. fuckers had less safety. Doesn't mean their tough. Actually safety measures are actually makes the game tougher and dangerous the more they know that their cushioned the harder they go at each other. They know they can just rely on rehab these days hence they push harder more.

@@4th19th2 the point is, those physical attacks on quarterbacks are now PENALIZED severely and are not permitted....but they WERE legal 50 years ago....Unitas DID call his own plays, and make his own game plan...NO quarterback does that NOW.....his receivers did NOT wear "sticky gloves"....But receivers NOW do !....the NFL rules then did not openly FAVOR the OFFENSE as they do NOW, in every possible way.....football now is like pro-wrestling.....very HYPED and manipulated to favor passing....it was NOT so 50+ years ago

Watch Johnny Unitas after Amichi scores. (a different film) The greatest game ever played ... the greatest play in that game ... winning the NFL championship ... and Unitas walks off like, "Ho hum ... just another day at the office." Amazing ... nerves of steel.
@MyMy-zi7yv Жыл бұрын
Jim O'Brien, I know exactly the video you're talking about and I've tried to find it. IT WAS AMAZING the way Unitas walked away after the handoff to Ameche as I guess through the corner of his vision he knew that Ameche was going to score, so he simply walked towards the bench like it was nothing. Unitas acted like how I wish today's players would! He was something else, he showed "humble sportsmanship," which of course today is, "laugh at the opponent sportsmanship!"

Players from this era was of a different breed. Respect for your opponent even if you hated him ! It started to change with Joe Namath arrival in pro football. Unitas walking off the field impressive beyond belief ! Players today wouldn't understand.

I was there (14 years old) with my brother (10 years old) and my uncle Frank who took us to the game at Yankee Stadium. We had $5.00 standing and room only tickets so you had to go about two hours early to get a good place to stand. We stood behind the seats on the second deck and were close to the 50 yard line. It was very cold in the 20's and 30's and you had to be out for about 5-6 hours to see the whole game. Needless to say we were frozen by the games end. We were rabid Giants fans and were most disappointed by the result. A truly exciting game especially for a couple of kids. I still have the $ 0.50 game program. Ahhh, the nostalgia!

The only way a championship game would be better than this under today's rules is if the Super Bowl goes into overtime and either 1) Team A kicks a field goal only for Team B to score a touchdown or B) Team A and Team B both kick field goals and it's sudden death.

This appears to be missing one to the most important plays of the game. With only two minutes to go in the game, the Giants only needed a first down to run out the clock. Gifford got the ball on third down and a yard to go. The officials said he came up short and the Giants had to punt the ball. The Colts tied it up and sent it into overtime. Gifford always maintained that he made the first down and the official made a mistake in where he put the down, causing Giff to be short. Gifford also said the ref came up to him after the game and admitted his mistake and apologized. Did Giff make that first down? We'll never know. But it was the turning point of the game.
@kevinevans59213 жыл бұрын
ESPN for the 50th anniversary of the game did a special. Analyzed the film and said he actually was short on the first down. I guess impossible to know for sure, but there’s an argument for the other side.
@howie9751 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinevans5921 I recently read a book about the game, and the Giants coach Jim Lee Howell is quoted in the book as saying he watched film of the game afterwards and said Giff came up short on the play. So maybe Giff was wrong. The only thing about the book that gives me any pause was that it was written by a Baltimore writer. I can't confirm anywhere if the ref came up to Giff after the game and apologized. Again, we'll never know but if Giff had converted the third down, but if he did, the NFL may not be what it is today. That overtime really changed things.

Yeah, I'll bet Unitas didn't have any luxury of any penalties in his favor like how it is today! It was truly brutal the way defensive players got away with fouls back then. Of course it went both ways for both teams. Todays people in charge of the NFL makes it so that ALL TEAMS have a chance in making a comeback. That sounds great except it's not real, if a team is so dominant they should beat the hell out of another team and no made up rules should interfere with that, but that's truly and really what the NFL has done to pro football! It's the NFL's way of 'welfare!'

Nobody talks about being at the 10 and THROWING the ball!! None of this go for the FG BS. Now, everybody plays for a FG. Nobody has the balls to throw for a TD, when a FG will win the game. Don't bring up that Seahawks Super Bowl, that's different. They had to score a TD to win the game. This game, the BALTIMORE COLTS only needed a FG.
