Average MP salary is less than $150,000 before taxes, often with the spouse not working raising multiple children but somehow becoming a multi Millionaires in a decade or less never raises alarm bells from the CRA. Strange that most Canadians need 2 incomes to raise 1 kid and can work 40 years and likely never have a million dollars in savings without a Union Pension to help them in retirement.

Given the state of Canada at present AND the objectives of the WEF, I believe Crystia Freeland has a BIG conflict of interest!!! How is it that the 2nd in command of our country is allowed to play such a big part in an organization whose watchword is; “Own nothing and you will be happy” (more or less) How is this in line with Canada’s aspirations?

Jon, you are right. It is a moral issue only if they care. We live in an era that kindness is treated as a sign of weakness, and meanness seems to be a lot more condoned. Morality isn’t a concern for many of the landlords out there, they got convinced that they are investing, not speculating.

I recall hearing an interview with a member of the current government a couple of years ago discussing the increasingly unaffordable real estate situation in Canada. The MP essentially said tough luck, Canadians need to stop thinking that everyone will be able to own a home. My jaw was on the ground. Unfortunately the interviewer didn’t ask what people who will now be renting their entire lives are supposed to do when they retire and no longer have the income to pay rent. Hearing this interview, I’m not at all surprised at the sizeable contingency of landlords amongst the MPs. An interesting bit of research Jon!

Having all those burdensome properties spread around the world I can totally understand why Chrystia Freehold would be forced to give up the familie’s Disney plus subscription. That must have made all the difference to her household cash flow.

In Hamilton they shot down the LRT until city councelers bought up homes on the proposed LRT line then passed it. They also shot down a vacancy tax and the Mayor has vacant properties. This should be a conflict of interest.

Not only do they control policies around lending, they directly control circumstances that would change the market value of homes. For example, if they poured immigrants into the country knowing that there aren't enough homes, that would massively increase rent and property values

The BNA Act, the Constitution clearly states housing to be a provincial responsibility. Is MPP disclosure info unavailable? The Ford Government, with total power to regulate how municipalities regulate lands, along with the power to create building and zoning laws is exempt? Vanguard ownership is a low cost way to own a piece of every company in the entire market (usually weighted by market cap). Their ETFs are a good way to get stock market exposure without any conflict of interest (because you don't pick any individual stocks).

Lease listings are going up in number because of speculators. People bought pre construction homes 2-3 years ago planning on flipping them for a profit. Now that prices are down, they are underwater and are leasing, waiting/hoping for prices to go back up.

Price inflation occurs as a result of an increase in money supply. Money supply increases when citizens initiate loans at a bank. Doesn't surprise me that political party leaders don't want to look at themselves as part of the problem.

Yes there is a problem, particularly with owners of multiple properties.

The owners of properties will never want to see the price declined, therefore, the policy maker is very inclined to set up policy in favor of themselves.

Just heard a discussion on the radio with a very knowledgeable guest. If an MP is found to be in conflict of interest, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to have any significant consequences. There are so many LOOPHOLES in our "laws", that 99 percent of the time there will NO repercussions for conflict of interest.

Great video Jon, Regarding the numbers of new builds. How many houses are removed from the inventory every year? I see builders pull down perfectly lovely 3 bed bungalows, to build unsellable luxury warehouses. Who wants an open plan 6 bedroom house anyway? Net result is fewer homes with people living in them.

This MPs may be taking out maximum 1k houses out of market which is not a big portion I would say, but real truth will come out only when they declare which MP has how much land bought in partnership with builders around GTA and all major cities that they make millions out of it. As everyone knows houses are more costly not because of construction cost is so high but we are paying 3 times more depends on which area we choose. So they make more money on land instead of one two or three rental properties they own.
