Hiya, It's me X (otherwise known as XV).
This is my first video on KZfaq, specifically on this account. I really hope you enjoyed the video, the instructions are rather straight forward and you will find the links to everything used in this video just under this paragraph.

I am High-School student, trying to really introduce this hobby to younger people. I do have room for improvement as I am also just dipping my toes into this hobby.
Next video will be about Ailunce HD1 and updated review on it (once mine arrives and when I have the chance to play around with it.). I will be letting you guys know what I like, and what I dislike about the radio.

-----
Summary of the video
-----
UV-5R is a great (affordable) dual-band radio for anyone new to the hobby. I have made this video to unlock the 1.25m band of the radio, letting people use the 200mhz spectrum. Please note that, this may not be 100% stable so do at your own risk, I have not had any issues yet. The mod also works on other UV-5R like radios, although I believe there are certain models that cannot be modded. It's worth just having it on the radio (at least for me), to be used in emergency situation or just talking to 1.25m repeaters.

It worked great for me. Thank you. But what I noticed is that. Both CHIRP, CHIRP NEXT and this Chinese programming software will not allow me to install 1.25 meter frequencies. I get an error message stating that the 1.25 meter frequencies are out of range for my UV5R8W. But ,... I can hand hewn the frequencies manually. Is that your same experience or not? Thanks again for sharing. Love this little hand held

You know what, this might work on the newer Bao's but more than likely the radio' filter might not allow ( band pass) the displayed frequency IE the 220 band ,or the actual frequency that passes is probably not the one shown. But I don't want to discourage anyone from experimenting, I just don't think the radio will be stable ( might end up with some odd frequency being transmitted) I'm going to buy a tri-band Baofeng to use 220 band again. It's a great band to work, it has the punch of 2 meter band with the penetration of the 70cm band . I just wanted you guys to be aware that programming in a 1.25 meter band might not "take" (especially older Bao's) or it might display that it's on frequency but actually it might be way off frequency. 73 to all🙂

Works great on my uv5r. After the install I noticed that if you are running Chirp on the same pc, in the other setting of the radio you can now adjust upper and lower limits for VHF and UHF. An excellent video! I will look into this further and check out your software Besides the UV-5RX3, Baofeng has the BF-R3 as a Tri-Band radio sharing the UV-5R case as well as the UV-S9X3 n a different case. I hear that the UV-9RX3 is also a Tri-Band radio but I never seen one in person (I own the UV-9R-Pro). I have a few UV-5R that I share with friends (when we go out camping and other outings), so I can experiment on one of those and try them out with my BF-R3. I am a Licensed Ham in the USA, but I am not one of those who sream and yell about the negativities about the Baofeng, I am more about getting on the airwaves and making contacts on anything I can get my hands on. The Boafeng is just an option for me to do this. Great work and thank you!

Note that this only tells the SOC to broadcast on 1.25m (and RX) but the secondary stage RF Power amplifiers are not tuned for that band. As such you are driving them via the primaries, and they are passives. If you put a watt meter on your radio you will note that the TX power is less than 1/2 a watt. This means that likely since there are no filters, decoupling, etc on the output if you run a bad antenna you will possibly blow the SOC (which is the radio). However, listening on 1.25m is of course no problem at all (other than sensitivity issues due to lack of filtering). The UV-5R is not a clean signal to begin with but the spurious harmonics on this radio mod reset the standards a bit. Again, not a sad HAM here, as with the power reduced so much who cares, just don't use a modded UV-5R to drive one of those 220 amps, that could get messy. I need to dig into the logic on this but just a quick check when I modded a tripower I noted that the RF power out was "inverted" so I am curious how the triband RF power amplifier side is connected to the SOC now.....

Yeah, I've personally only used it for testing purposes and just to have it in the radio to begin with (not much 200mhz stuff going around here). I've heard couple AM transmissions in the 200mhz band (Not sure where they originated, the license of the frequencies are somewhat questionable, but emission designators and signal is AM), sounds absolutely horrible for AM (they weren't made for AM modulation). Just a "cool thing to have"

Is the software reading the data from your radio first and than adapting the possible frequency ranges to the type of radio? If the software recognises the hardware it should be possible to enhance existing VHF range to 108-200 MHz in FM and AM, right? Do you know if it does that? I have heard of this issue in the past, I have no clue why it does that. Some people have complained and reported that the radio may be missing the FM receiver completely. I cannot confirm that information nor have I ever come across the issue myself.

@@koreanhamguy2715 & VU3MES Ham Radio Channel - I was informed by a tech at Baofeng that the FM IC has been removed in some radios that they sell to other vendors to be resold (not sure which vendors or models). The tech told me they do this to lower the cost of the HT. Not sure if it is true. But it would explain why some vendors UV-5R copies (like BTCH) have the FM Radio working. While some of the others do not.

Hey, sorry for the late reply (had to deal with school stuff and research on this topic). Ailunce had released a "tuner" software that allowed 1.25m on the radio. However, it was taken down shortly after due to improper implementation. I am working to make that HD1 "1 year later" review comparing it to my Motorola (MotoTRBO) Handheld radio.

That was because I was using a DSLR with 50mm F1.8 lens (shallow depth of field). I am currently (for my more recent video) using a much wider lens at around F4 which should get rid of the unnecessary background blur (it’s a radio channel not a camera channel).

After watching this video, I tried this (using CHIRP), and while it DID allow the 1.25M band to stay on the display, it wouldn't actually transmit or receive on any of the (3) 220 freqs in my area. Maybe the other software would fix that, but I doubt I'll go to the trouble of installing and learning a different app to try it.

You are pushing the limits of an already compromised radio, first your results would not be valid because its the radio that is compromised. I am all for experimenting, that is the heart and sole of amateur radio, but lets do it properly, lets do it where we know the base lines and lets do it where it can be replicated. Hi again.. I just managed to mod my UV-5RHT with CHIRP!!! (the method show in this video didn't work for me) Here is how I did it (maybe you can make another video about this if you will be able to replicate it): 1. Run CHIRP (my version is CHIRP daily-20200807) 2. Connect your Bao 3. Read from your device, not to loose your channels in memory (if you can't read - check for another COM port) 4. [optional] Save your channel list to file (backup) 5. On the left side you have vertically oriented tabs "Memory" "Settings" "Browser" 6. Click "Settings" 7. Choose "Other settings" 8. At "VHF Upper Limit" change 179 to 260 (one can experiment with other bands UHF/VHF and limits - but for your own responsibility) 9. Save file as.. (new backup) 10. Send to device. 11. Voila!

@@ChrisZwolinski I mean, out of a cheap handheld like UV5R I really can't expect them to add Micro SD slot or have larger memory. Mainly because this means that they have to redesign everything (case, motherboard etc). Which ends up being very costly for both manufacturers and consumers. Really, it's a radio that's meant to be simple and accessible which is why I love the radio despite having all my other handhelds, scanners, sdr etc. You simply cannot beat simplicity. Also, in my opinion I am against having larger capacity simply because of the small screen and lack of banks/zones meaning to navigate through channels, you have to go through all of them (at least if you don't have the channel # memorized). These are all my personal opinions though and at the end of the day, if you want anything other than a simple baofeng. There is no other option than to buy a better radio (although it would still be interesting and cool to see baofeng make changes such as more channel capacity in normal UV5R lineup). Have a great holiday!
