Custom Cyberdeck For (Legal) Satellite Hacking

After doing a number of satellite and radio astronomy experiments, I finally got tired of my old briefcase full of tangled radio gear. I dug through my collection of broken computers, old wires, spare parts, and other junk, and assembled an all-in-one space cyberdeck!
This system combines most of my satellite and software-defined-radio gear into one portable platform. The hardware includes:
- Touchscreen computer
- RTL-SDR radio
- Various filter / amp modules
- Various WiFi modules
- Satellite Meter / digital video player
- PTZ control for my older dish pointers
- LNB power injector
- King-Dome / Vuqube control
- Panel-mount port interfaces
Software includes:
- Q4OS (simple, low-resource Linux)
- GQRX (standard SDR software)
- Gpredict for satellite tracking
- GOEStools, WXtoIMG, etc for weather satellites
The system is fairly modular and expandable, with most major components simply stuck in with velcro tape. If I want to swap modules for a different experiment, I can just pop them out and replace with something else.

- Old Dell PCMCIA wifi card
- Old Broadcom Mini-PCI wifi card
- King-Dome remote

I'm planning to do a variety of projects and experiments with this system and my various 2nd-hand satellite antennas in the future. Stay tuned to see what I come up with!

There's plenty of trial and error, and dead ends, and broken stuff! I mostly do this tech stuff in the winter, summer is too busy with boats and yard projects!

That is a real cyberdeck - not these often useless toys people build. In my opinion, a cyberdeck is an utilitarian custom computer for specialised purposes (just remember the "heroes" of these cyberpunk novels and what they were doing). And this device ticks all these boxes. Thank you! It is very inspirational.

This is a Steve Wozniak type of guy you want to be a around for a start up - Great Upload ! I wanted to make a business back in the late 2000's measuring wireless phone company's radio frequencies, then selling the data to marketing firms. Didn't go through with it because I was hanging out with people held me back. I'm sure it would have been a minor success, you have a lot of passion in what you do. Never let anyone hold you back from your own idea's 👍

this was so cool seeing the inside of a datalux again.. love it. These were the older models, but they were bought by A LOT of departments because they were fanless and made out of cast aluminum. we had several survive car fires, crashes etc.. the model you are using was a pain to repair.

Nice, I've got an older Dell laptop with a dead battery too but couldn't decide if it was worth getting another. I replaced the old drive with an SSD a while ago and put Lubuntu on it. It runs pretty good (dual core, 4GB memory) and I use it mainly for videos when I'm sleeping, and sometimes practice shell commands/scripting. I used to work at a small computer repair shop about 10 years ago and when we shut it down, we held onto a TON of the old hardware that is, by now, obsolete except for some niche use cases maybe. I haven't figured out how to dispose of whatever isn't worth keeping though.

The little rabbit ears that come with an RTL-SDR kit work pretty well, as long as you have them extended to the right length and angle. I've also made one out of coat hangers / random metal rods. If you want better performance and a stronger signal there are designs like a QFH that can be made at home, they're just a little more complicated (I made two and only the 2nd one really works).

Dell docking stations through USBC firewire is actually pretty great. Not only can they provide 80 watts to a laptop they can do 4K and 1080p displays simultaneously as well as audio and multiple USB channels. All of them at 60 FPS

I do IT in the business world, docking stations are huge now with a big push for laptops that works can use for hybrid WFH and in-office. Each user has a dock with monitors and KB/M at work and potentially in a home office as well (although most just plug into their own TV or monitor at home). The Dell ones are pretty reliable, well built, and also partially modular. They are expensive as hell though... Dell...

There is something you can add that has a good chance . Maybe a different generator that produces a higher voltage but with lower amps and in between the steam engine and generator add some gearing . Hope this helps , great video by the way !

I'm hoping this gets more use than some of my other special-purpose computers. I made a little emulator arcade system that mostly gathers dust now, and I never have time for my drawing tablet. I haven't learned my lesson though, one of my upcoming vidoes is to hack a Kindle into something more useful that will then probably not get used!

(6:43) It probably originally came with a wiring harness that pulled power from the car's 12V accessory power rail, and USB probably connected to other devices that had their own wiring harnesses. With that, it was likely easier not to remove the wiring harnesses from the cars when selling them. At least you could just remove the connector entirely! (7:08) Q4OS is based on Debian, which currently still supports 32-bit x86, and when installing through it's installer (instead of a live session), at least in 'expert mode', there's an option to select a kernel that's either 32-bit or 32-bit with PAE. Ubuntu, while based on Debian, doesn't support 32-bit x86 at all (they used to). It may be possible to run Linux Mint Debian Edition 32-bit with Debian's 32-bit non-PAE kernel, but that would be too complex for you to do, and Q4OS seems to support 32-bit x86 without PAE, so there you go. (10:52) Meanwhile, I was using a Linksys WPC54G provided to me by my ISP to steal Wi-Fi from my neighbours using a half broken NEC Versa E400 laptop that had, like, a dead keyboard, dead left speaker, dead battery, and wires sticking out for the power input. Yeah, those were the days before Wi-Fi routers came with WPA enabled out of the box. 2007 was a point in time… (yes I was using my own Wi-Fi connection most of the time, and yes the ISP also provided a WRT54G as well) (12:10) (14:30) That looked to me like one of those random brands to just get a trademark so they can get leverage when selling on Amazon. I tried to start my own wisp back in the late 90's with some dec-915mhz stuff (later became lucent wavelan, not to be confused with wav2lan) I'd love to find some of that & the old 915mhz mesh equipment from NYC or that pre-802.11 2.4gig stuff that a Mane isp had that did 60mph hand-off on same SSID... Hard to believe there was all that available in the 90's and no-one wanted broadband back then...

@@petevenuti7355 WaveLAN?!?! Whoa. As someone who grew up in the 2000s, I can only imagine what it would've been like, and how expensive that kind of stuff likely were. Where I live, we were able to get broadband (more specifically, cable Internet) as far back as 1999!
