This is one of the best documentaries I've seen about any piece of music or composer.
Amazon's official review reads: "What the Universe Tells Me is probably the deepest, most painstakingly detailed but also approachable attempt to decipher the inner dynamics of a complex work of art ever entrusted to any recording medium". Bold statement, but I certainly agree with it.
I'm not trying to rip anyone by posting this. On the contrary, I try to promote this work and I really encourage anyone to buy this DVD. With the DVD you'll also get an hour long extras on various subjects ("The artist as a prophet" concept, the premiere, Mahler's relationship with the public, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, The Youth's Magic Horn songs) and the full performance of the 3rd that is featured in the documentary.
By the way, the same director (Jason Starr) is preparing a similar documentary about Mahler's 2nd symphony, called "The resurrection of Gustav Mahler"

Such a beautifully made documentary for perhaps one of the universe’s most ineffably touching creations... Mahler’s 3rd symphony.

I have always considered Mahler's Third to be his greatest work. Certainly, along with Deryck Cooke, I think the First Movement the greatest single movement that Mahler ever composed.

@@andrewle4227 It’s really difficult to put them in order of preference, but if I had to it would be: Third, Second, Eighth, First, Sixth, Fifth, Ninth, Fourth, Seventh.

A beautiful study of the music and the cosmology behind it. The title of this documentary is very appropriate.

Thanks for uploading this. I've always loved Mahler. I've studied Nietzsche. I just recently discovered Schopenhauer. What serendipity to find this documentary to see how they all connect.

Sorry to be so pessimistic here guys but Benjamin Zander's essay on this symphony is a lot more informative, accurate, and self-fulfilling.

I feel a bit ashamed to admit that the 3rd Symphony has by far always been my least favorite of Mahler's symphonies. I must of listened to his 2nd, 4th, and 9th a trillion times over the years. I've listened to the 3rd all the way through maybe twice. For shame self.

'Thz artist has the power to perceive a reality not deformed by the Will'. How to completely destroy Schopenhauer' philosophy in one, terribly misinformed, phrase.
