I have two questions for you. Motorcyclists are often guilty of searching for that perfect bike, the one that will do everything: the panacea or unicorn bike. Does it exist? If so, do you own it? I ask you two questions. Grab a mug of your favourite brew, watch along, and leave your answers below.

My 2006 Aprilia Caponord came really close to being my perfect do-it-all. I still miss it. The one I wish I bought: Aprilia Tuono V4.

Interesting dilemma. After 43 Motorcycles, since my first in 1961, I had a 'few' that stirred my soul. The one I really hated to part with after 20 years of ownership and fading strength making it difficult to handle, was a 1981 Honda CBX - 6, the one with the fairing, bags and single rear shock. Many happy miles (KMS) with virtually no issues. Having to downsize in my 'old age' was difficult but I've 'settled' on a new left-over 650 WEE-Strom. This year will see how well THAT choice turned out.

The perfect bike is the one that puts a smile on your face. For most of us that means there are many perfect bikes. As for that one or two bike I would love to experience.... an Ariel Square 4 and an original Honda CB350 from the early 1970's.

The "Squariel" - a very sought after bike. I'm surprised you didn't go for the CB77 NightHawk that Pirsig rode. Nice choices, Lyle.

I had my unicorn; a 2004 VFR800 with Honda hard side cases in Asphalt black and a Sargent seat with silver welt. (Chef’s kiss) Owned it three years and got the I-need-a-new-bike bug. Should never have sold that beauty. Fit me like a glove. 😔 I would love to have a go on Blackbird. Not for the top speed, but for the experience of old school effortless power…

I have heard so many good things about the VFR800. I have a friend who is a very experienced rider (4 bikes right now) took a ride on a blackbird and whenever we sit and talk bikes, that one always comes up as the bike that was the ultimate experience for him.

After much research, I decided, at the age of 76, that my second bike (I bought my first one at 75) would be a Honda NC750X DCT. Yes, there were compromises, and I continue to look at what others say about different bikes, but I've concluded there is no one bike that ticks all the boxes.
@BlueMarbleRider

First, you're an inspiration to me - second, the NC750X is a very underrated bike. Like someone said below: it's the bike that puts the smile on your face that counts. Cheers.

Great topic. For me, the only brand new bike I have ever owned is the Moto Guzzi Mandelo V100s. Love at first site. Intoxicating intake and exhaust reports. Add panniers, centrestand and higher heated comfort seat. Perfect for my 6foot frame.
@BlueMarbleRider

I wondered if the V100s would come up. It's certainly on my list as a do it all road bike. I'd like a side by side with the Stelvio. It seems like the natural destination for someone who owns a Vstrom and a Griso....

Finding a bike that handles the mountain roads then can transverse light dirt roads then can handle going across several states ion a tour sn't that hard to find. Now finding that looks and sounds good at decent price that does all of those things.....that is the hard part.

Cheap, reliable, fast - pick two.. New Guzzi Stelvio ticks lots of boxes, yet the AJP PR7 does it all for me as I need to do more hard off-road too. One bike to ride? Brough Superior SS100 😊
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 4 ай бұрын
Both the stelvio and the AJP PR7 have crossed my mind. The AJP is a real contender for the best real world adv bike for me. Great choice. I climbed all over a Brough Superior SS100 at Brooklands a few months back. Just the starting procedure was daunting. But a beautiful bike. I quite like the modern ones too. Cheers.

For me the perfect bike is the Z900RS. It has everything that I want: ride by cable for that pure riding experience, four cylinder engine which growls as well as screams, analog gauges with the right amount of digital, and that handsome classic styling with modern handling and brakes. I would not buy an Italian motorcycle. I value reliability too much. But, if got a chance to ride a V4 at a race track, I would not mind it.

I'd love to ride a BMW 9T, but it's not practical for me. I always wanted a boxer and I finally got an R1200RS last year. Good for touring and daily riding, but left me wanting another bike to go off-road on.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 4 ай бұрын
I have a friend with 9T, and it does sound and look lovely, but very focused. R1250 is a very popular do it all bike, but it's expensive and a little heavy for true off road. Hmm...Tenere 700/Aprillia 660?

For me, it’s my DR650 because of how I use it. That said, I REALLY want to pair it with a gen 2 vstrom 1000. I guess the truest unicorn is two bikes 😅

Great into 😂 Ok so y’all are gunna think me daft or just plain out right bonkers but……my unicorn, out of all the bikes I have ridden to date, and there’s been more than few, it has to be my trusted 2015 CRF250L. I know, I know, “it’s a 250?! it’s only 24p?! What are you talking about???” But for me, my riding style, my adventure style, this IS my unicorn. It does everything I ask of it without complaint, it has very minimal maintenance requirements, it’s trusty as heck, and is a ton of fun to ride! There are few I haven’t tried that I’d like too but the one style of motorcycle that stands out, that I have never tried, is a crotch rocket. I would like to try one just once. I would never own one, but I’d like to try it.

Your CRF250L is total unicorn bike, particularly for what we do round here. Had friend who got on a GSXR1000 for a spin. He was so freaked out afterwards, his kneecaps wouldn't stop vibrating up and down! Quite the experience, he said.

The Aprilia Tuareg has been treating me pretty well. So far it is as close to the unicorn as I can think of. Plenty of go on road and hugs corners amazingly to be as good as it is offroad. I have a Beta 300 2 stroke for harder offroad stuff.

Agree the Tuareg would be a bike I would consider for the "do it all" label. Do you watch "Hippodrones" YT channel? I only ask, because, among others, he owns both your bikes too...Great minds think alike. Cheers.

The bike that would satisfy all my riding needs at the moment would be a Matchless G85CS rolling chassic with a new build G50 engine.. (the Pyrenees are minutes away) My No 2 bike would be an early '70s Moto Guzzi V7 Sport.. By the way, I see you no longer list the Griso as a paying guest in your garage.. What happened?

My unicorn bike would be the Honda super sport 400 from the 70 love to own one of those. I now have cb500x 2019 been so reliable at 65 and thinking of retirement I will end with a retro style bike not hard to move around in the garage.

LoLoL ive tried to build the ultimate 1 do it all bike many times over again and what "ultimate' means to me has changed over the years as well , ive also tried the multi-bike solution and for my circumstance its not practical really , well a 300 XCW aside , it is of course not possible but im still gonna try , my current steed a 2022 Husky 901 with more money in mods than i have good sense is pretty damned good. id love to have the KTM 890 'Ralley' with that $7K-USD suspension !? but to ride just 1-time Duc Penagali V4 R i think it is , the 240hp Duck
