hm, physics still is valid in space: "action = reaction". Firing such weapon would at least rip the weapon rigth out of the spaceship and the sudden acceleration of the whole ship due to the recoil would kill all occupants - especially in such a small ship. But al least no AI voice.

Perhaps they operate similar to the recoilless rifle and dissipate the energy through various venting systems. As it is science FICTION, we were never given any technical specs and anything is possible. Kinda like Star Trek, Star Wars, Last Starfighter, etc. ... make up 💩 as we go.
