BRCAinBC's inaugural event, "One in 40: From Awareness to Empowerment," held on January 8th, 2020, was the first time the BC Jewish community had gathered to discuss the elevated risk BRCA 1 and 2 gene mutations among Ashkenazi Jews. Th event was held in memory of the late Geoff Remocker, who lost his battle with an aggressive prostate cancer in 2016.
Attended by over 250 individuals, organized by the BRCAinBC Committee and supported by Congregation Beth Israel, the event aimed to address the lack of awareness of the BRCA genes and poor testing coverage in British Columbia for Ashkenazi Jews.
The audience listened to keynote speaker, Libby Znaimer, who discussed her own experience with the BRCA genes and her documentary, "Cancer Saved My Life." Members of BC Cancer's Hereditary Cancer Program also gathered to answer audience questions and discuss the issues.
The success of the event and the committee's ongoing dedication hinted at potential initiatives in other Jewish communities across Canada and what would become of BRCAinBC. This recording serves as a powerful reminder of the community's collective efforts and its humble beginnings.
