This video gives a condensed history on the life, art and untimely death of Jean-Michel Basquiat. This video gives an educational insight into his upbringing, his entrance into the art world as one half of SAMO, continuing to his breakthrough work and last pieces. Jean Michel was a brilliant Artist- delving in to themes and issues that we still tackle today.

I love his art. I feel inspired to start making art. When I first started looking at his art, I thought it was cartoonish. But the the more I've learned about him, his work is complex. He expressed his thoughts on racism, marginalized people in a bold way. I like the way he coded his work with words .That makes it more accessible to me

I grew up in NYC - younger than him but as a teenager, moved in the same party circles/club scene w/my then Haitian BF, as JMB … I try to see his work anywhere I can - films, interviews, shows. I’ve watched Schnabel’s film Basquait more than any film ever and I continue to watch it… his work, his presence just cuts to the core 🖤

If ever a picture were worth a thousand words, JMB's paintings truly are. His message and his creative spontaneity crashed head-on and bled out all over the various supports he chose. IMHO, the various abstractive styles of painting are the purest forms of creative expression and are satisfied with a lesser degree of craftsmanship. Conversely, hyper-realism is the execution of extreme craftsmanship requiring the least amount of creative expression. Other styles fall somewhere on the scales in between those two styles. The various styles are equally valid when examined, and understood, within their proper context. All that being said, JMB's works are masterful.

Love the video. I also wonder about Basquiat’s work if he was living by now. Art is personal indeed. It is quite challenging to understand what he expressed on a canvas. Profound mouths, brainy answers about apes, lots of knowledge in history came as an explosion of universal art. Same colors, scratches, words in reference. Unique!

He had so much going on. Imagine if he was still alive. His artwork resonates still and will ever be contemporary. Finally a piece about him without the racist gaze of art, great work. Also please keep doing art, the inspired pieced u showed at the end, priceless!

Hi I think is good to add that what picasso said doesn't mean that copy the work of others artist used as a reference yes but be free using your imagination and creativity like a child which most of as forgotten how to becouse life and society demands of becoming a adults however inside of you is a kid that one time grab a piece a paper and make scrambled and draw things directly from freedom of the mind just expressing that is what JMB is to me be free don't try to copy just draw things whit not thinking let your filing s flow and take control of the work

I think the general contingency is that for something to be True Art, the Artist’s piece must be disassociated from their established environment (and really disassociated from themselves) by at least 2 degrees of separation. They knew this then, and so that’s why we saw a Basquiat who was trying oh so hard not to try.

Part of JMB's problem was the albatross of celebrity and his acknowledgment therein. His proximity to AW exacerbated the situation no doubt.

As a person of mixed race i need to say that i think alot of his problems where not just racism, but also his image ( style of cloths, hair and so on), and also the fact that he was a heroin addict. Racism is and was real, but i don`t think he made life more easy for himself. When you look like a homeless person, you can`t expect a getting a taxi. And his style was in alot of ways like a child. I do love his art and i think it`s absolutely brilliant, also the way he put focus on topics like police brutality and racism. But reality is that " habitus" do matter. If you are white and look homeless, people are going to judge you as a homeless person. And walking into a fine dining restaurant or establishment that is not used to " Bohemians", looking like a homeless person would be a problem today to. I think that he was at some level narcissistic and lived in his own privat world. This a large part of what makes his art so unike. But i also think that alot of the videos about his life need to talk about the facts.

@@cameron9322 Is it so weird? . If i was driving a taxi i would not pick up a man that looks homeless. If he was black or white. And i would not rent out my apartment to a person who simply looks " bad credit rating". This is just how the world worked then, and now. But he is a brilliant artist, and his style is cool. I`m just saying that he did not make things more easy for himself by beeing a heroin addict and looking like a bum. In todays woke world people will scream out that thats hatefull, but as far as i can see i simply state the facts of life and business. On the other hand. His personal style is brilliant for selling art and looking " Bohemian". This is how we want a artist to look like even today. If he was living today i guess he would have tattoos all over his body, face, hands and probably have coloured his dreads in all types of colours. And then again, that would not make his credit rating go up 😂
