Return of Rome is here! Let's check out the campaigns
In this scenario, Trajan must assist his Emperor Domitian put down a rebellion against the rebel emperor Saturninus. It's a pretty straightforward intro mission, but we need it to figure out just what the heck we are doing in AoE1 11

AoE 1's high concept was civilization meets warcraft, and part of that was trying to mimic some things that were counterintuitive gameplay wise but somewhat made sense in a semi historical sense. So for example, you don't have that many military research techs, mostly econ research that also has a military application. Woodworking makes you better at gathering wood, but also it makes your bowman stronger. The wheels makes your villagers faster, but also gives you war chariots! The walls from granaries comes from the notion that early fortifications were developed to protect food stores from bandits - human or vaermin. A village that herded sheep or hunted had no need for walls, since they were nomadic. But farmers were tied to a specific land and thus had to protect it. Hence think of it less as researching better defensive masonry in a food storage facility, and more as investing in better defenses for said storage. granaries were really the thing that Kickstarted civilization as we know it in many ways, since food surplus is the cause for so many things that still endure, from writing to war, from marriage to division of labour, and its hard to utilize food surplus without storage for it, now is it?
@Israelyguy14
@Israelyguy14 Жыл бұрын
This is also why the tech tree looks like it does. Granaries allow markets, markets allow for temples and government centers, which is one of the theories of how civilizations begun. Food surplus (granary)allows labour specialization and trade (market), which in turn allow and fund the creation of bureaucracy, taxation and government (govt. Center) and organized religion (temple) since one can't have a priestly caste in a society that can't generate a surplus of food. However, even a modest agricultural society that has no trade, a ruling class or a priestly class still would need to protect its food, hence why you research walls and towers at a granary. Now since then a lot of other theories have developed, including one where trade came prior to food surpluses, or one where farming started because of ancient religious music festivals that needed a steady supply of alcohol. That's my favorite.
@ArawnOfAnnwn
@ArawnOfAnnwn Жыл бұрын
"mostly econ research that also has a military application" - I tend to think the reason for this was just cos it was the first game and they were afraid no one would research those 'boring' eco techs unless they also contributed to your military. By the time of AoE 2 I guess they learned that players did recognize the value of investing in your economy.
@Israelyguy14
@Israelyguy14 Жыл бұрын
@@ArawnOfAnnwn see, we know that's not true because age1 had an interactive encyclopedia on the cd you could access that served as a manual. And the explanation is pretty much that. Also the game still has a tonne of purely economical upgrades like the gold mining, stone mining (which had no military applications before slingers were added in ror), farm upgrades, etc. The first game just really tried to lean into the civilization meets warcraft aspects, that really is it.

There is so much potential in this DLC campaign wise. With AOE2 DE, it was starting to get kind of saturated with the civs and campaigns, but Antiquity has so much going on for it, so many civs, so many events related to conquests. This one has only 3, Trajan, Pyrrhus and Sargon of Akkad, but in the future, many more can be added. Caesar, Alexander the Great, Hammurabi, Hannibal, Thutmose III, Neo-Assyrian Sargonid dynasty (Sargon II, Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Ashurbanipal), Nebuchadnezzar, Ramses II, Hittite Empire (Tudhaliya, Suppiluliuma, Mursili II), Classical Greece, Achaemenid Empire, etc. etc.

If the Stone Throwers work like they do in classic AoE1, they have a microscopic area of blast damage. However, all catapult variants in AoE1 deal FULL damage to everything they hit, so larger catapults in classic AoE1 can actually be quite scary

Lol. AOE1 is a a more primitive time in human history. I think the tower granary thing is some reference to how defensive fortifications are said to have originated, to guard the most important thing in a village, it's food store. Interesting aside here: read the agganna sutta in Buddhism, for a parallel insight into how the concept of private property arose, through storage of food. As for stone throwers, the concept is simple. You are near the stone when it hits, you basically die. No need for sophisticated concepts like blast damage :D

For this scenario's achievement (winning the scenario under 10 minutes game time), I got the two western camps and sent their units to western rebel base, while initial army+eastern camp, along medium swordmen as reinforcement to central rebel base. This is what AOE1 DE should have looked like when they released it in 2018.... Well, better late than never! Great video as always!! I though you did pretty well considering you have never played AOE 1 before. By the way, I think you didnt research it in this scenario but you should DEFINITELY research wheel at the market as soon as possible. It will make your villagers move 50% faster which is huge and improve your economy big time!! Also, they say Romans is an infantry civ and it's true with all upgrades and techs available for Swordsmen and Hoplite line but they also have pretty good siege (Heliopolis are so damn OP) and a decent navy as well ;)

At start, upgrade to medium sword and make some of them. Once you conquer the second settlement, you can make 5 fishing ships and 5-10 trade cogs(IMPORTANT: trading units now work the same as AoE II, which means there is no loss of resources in exchange of gold). Make some calvary/chariots to clear the settlement's garrisons (enemy archers and catapults overall). After conquering all, wait for Hadrian to help you advance to Iron Age, then start upgrading longsword, ballistics and siege engines. Then, start creating and upgrading the ballista. Heliopolis (6) and longswords as meatshield is all you need. Have 3+4 catapults to destroy towers if you want, but roman helepolis are beasts

Keep in mind tgat foot archers are only upgradable up till the Bronze Age. Against Bronze Age Swordsman they should work fine, but against Hoplites you will have to micro. In the Iron Age you get the new Horse Archers which makes hit and run a lot easier. Just be careful to not run out of map space. Heavy infantry is supposed to be rather strong, but slow. Hence they're expensive. Priests, Elephants and Siege will finish them off quite easily.

Nothing against you, the video quality is top and enjoyable as usual, but the expansion seems...well it's AOE I DE? units now have formations, but no proper unit dialogue, the buildings are the same, so confusing for AOE II players(although I grew up playing both) and honestly, the units look significantly worse than AOE II DE units. pixelated and the movement is so clunky. Not for me. Maybe the Romans that will work with the AOE II data set and appear in the campaigns. But this is definitely the most unappealing DLC they did, if it can even be called that. It's a money grab in my opinion and a minor improvement and gameplay change for those AOE I DE multiplayer fans
