0:13 What is keratosis pilaris?
1:45 What causes keratosis pilaris?
6:35 The best remedy for keratosis pilaris
8:18 Check out my video on the benefits of cod liver oil!
Today we're going to talk about the best remedy for keratosis pilaris, also known as chicken skin or strawberry skin. Instead of focusing on treating this symptom, I'm going to share a great natural remedy for the root cause of this issue.
Keratosis pilaris is an excess amount of keratin on the surface of the skin. This condition causes small and swollen red bumps on the back of the arms, thighs, or face.
Causes of keratosis pilaris:
1. Vitamin A deficiency
Common causes of a vitamin A deficiency:
• A lack of vitamin A in the diet
• A problem with the liver or gallbladder
• A gut issue that causes malabsorption
• A vegan diet
• A low-fat diet
2. High androgens (in females)
A common cause of high androgens:
• High insulin in the blood (hyperinsulinemia)
Common causes of hyperinsulinemia:
• A high-carb diet
• Eating too frequently
• High levels of stress
• Obesity
• Metabolic syndrome
• Omega-6 fats
3. Estrogen dominance
Common causes of estrogen dominance:
• Birth control pills
• Pregnancy
The best remedy for keratosis pilaris is cod liver oil.
Cod liver oil:
• Contains omega-3 fatty acids
• Is great for the skin
• Is anti-inflammatory
• Supports blood sugar levels and reduces insulin
• Contains vitamin A
• Is a good source of vitamin D
If you have keratosis pilaris, try consuming a high-quality cod liver oil. It's also essential to correct your diet by cutting out omega-6 fats and going on a low-carb diet. Managing your stress levels and improving your liver will also be beneficial.

I had KP on my arms for years, my family has it too however, mine is not as severe as my family members. What I noticed is this, improving my diet, higher protein intake, less junk food, etc have all made massive improvement to my KP on my arms. I also noticed that showering in very hot water aggregates my KP so I would make sure that when I'm taking hot showers, I would not let my KP come into contact with the hot water. Instead I would switch to cold water and use soap to wash my arms. I still have KP on my arm but it's not as bad. Previously I tried medication and many other options but none of them worked... I wasted hundreds of dollars doing this. Fixing diet, moisturizing and showering my KP areas with cold water are what worked for me. In short, 1. Diet ( less junk food, higher protein intake ) 2. No hot water showers on KP areas 3. Moisturizer. I use a simple water-based moisturizer called "Hada Labo" It's from Japan.

Just a little suggestion. I am a holistic master esthetician of almost 4 decades and I agree with Dr B. I also have my Clients exfoliate daily by either dry brushing or using a body brush with their body wash in the shower. I then have them use a sugar scrub ( not salt) or an oil before drying off. A few other tips are head and shoulders in the dark blue bottle and applying Monistat 7 classic( yes it works, anti fungal) all of those and diet have helped my clients get rid of Keratosis Pilaris completely. Many times the skin being thick or calloused is also an issue and or we have activated or left an opening for the natural fungus and bacteria on our skin. Just some extra skin love. Blessings to all of you 🍑🙌🏻🧡Lisa

I started getting crazy dry skin in my late 30’s. I went on a keto diet (not knowing the connection with carbs and dry skin) and my skin completely changed. Now anytime my skin starts getting really dry I know I need to cut back on carbs and sugars!! I knew skin tags were associated with being overweight and diabetes but didn’t realize why. Thanks for the education!

Dr. Berg this was so informative!! I never had keratosis pilaris before I used accutane. After my course of 80mg for 7 months, I started developing these bumps on my outer arms. When I asked my doctor, she said I should just exfoliate more- which hardly did anything! I've been off accutane for two years now, the cystic acne came back (found out the cause was PCOS, so accutane was actually inappropriate) and paying closer attention to my diet and health and it's mostly clear! I didn't even realize why! Thank you so much for talking about ROOT CAUSES rather than just how to cover it up!!

With keratosis I also teach my clients to exfoliate daily while they wash their bodies. I have them use a Body brush either to dry brush or apply their body wash to it. I also tell them to dry off soft, either using a sugar scrub ( not salt) before final rinse or an oil. I've had this skin issue since I was a child. It would be on the back of my arms and all over my legs. It made me very self conscious as a teen because girls would make fun of how gross my legs looked. I knew shaving made my condition worse so I never shaved or used chemical shaving creams. Luckily I'm blonde so my hair isn't super obvious, but I remember growing up and believing I would never find someone who would love me because I couldn't make my legs smooth and pretty. Like the ONLY thing a guy cares about are baby butt smooth legs 😂

Very interesting video, thank you! In my late teens and early 20's, I had KP on my thighs and upper arms. No idea what they were at the time. But I went on a trip to Jamaica (not my first) and I decided that "this time" I would not use any toxic sunscreens on my skin, only virgin coconut oil. I never did any "sunbathing" (on purpose), I mostly stayed in the shade, except when I was in the water... and after 10 days, my KP was virtually gone (no sunburn, either) and has not come back since. That made me believe that it could've been caused by a vitamin D deficiency... yes, coconut oil and the salt water also probably helped!

In the past I got some lotions from dermatologists, but nothing was a game changer. Some years ago I drastically reduced gluten because of stomach problems and the crazy side effect was, that I had clear skin on my arms after 3 weeks of diet. I also suffer from PCOS and insulin resistance and now I wonder if I've had insulin problems in my childhood already.

I have sensitive stomach so I can’t have fast food often. The reason behind my skin is mostly due to emotional stress, high insulin and obesity. To all the remedies mentioned by Dr. Berg, I would strongly recommend adding vitamin K2 supplements to the regime, for me it was the most significant factor in reducing KP by 80 percent. I took atleast 100 mcg a day, plus I stopped using body washes that contain soap, since in contact with the hard water in my area it was causing cloged pores on the back of the arms and back, which would lead to more dry skin, folliculits and scabs.
