Thanks I envy your lifestyle. I m 80 but still ride my Harley and my Kawasaki daily. Lived in Vung Tau 1968,,also Nha Trang and Saigon. If I were not tied down to my sick wife, I would be off to vietnam in a minute. The Vietnamese are such humble people and the country so beautiful and interesting. I grew up there. You have one of the best view of VungTau. Housing there is very expressive now. 600$ is reasonable.

Great video. Thanks. I recently spent two months in Vietnam and really enjoyed it. My first time there. I like it better than Thailand. Great people and food and less expensive than Thailand, and not as overrun by foreigners as Thailand. I was in Vung Tau one week to escape the crazy traffic in Saigon. I really liked Vung Tau. It's a 'level 1' city, according to the Vietnamese government, and I can see why. Very relaxing place with great weather and not much traffic. It was quite windy when I was there though, and the beaches don't seem that appealing for swimming. But I'd rather look at the sea than swim in it anyway. I wish you happiness and comfort in Vietnam :)

Wow a nice apartment ,and yes you are truly correct ,that view is worth every penny,truly stunning,to wake up to that view everyday and sit outside having breakfast would be a dream come true for most people,even sitting watching those storms you speak of from there must be amazing,maybe you should take up photography ,as i am one hundred percent sure,you would catch some stunning photo's,good luck and hope you keep enjoying life.

This is my retirement plan, I have a few years to wait , I'll be there in a month for a holiday & a look . I am impressed with what I see . I have been to Vn twice but not to Vung Tao yet

I've lived in Saigon for 15 years now, and I gotta say that Vung Tau may be the most underappreciated place of Vietnam. It's so easy to get away to for a day or two, it's quite lovely and laid back, and there's plenty (enough for me, at least) to see and do there.

The beauty of Vung Tau has stuck in my mind since the middle 60’s, I’d love to see it again.

I have been thinking a lot lately about retiring in Vietnam. I left (pronounced escaped) Vietnam in 1979 when I was 9yrs old. I am 50 now and hopefully can retired in at 65yrs, in 15yrs. I don't live too far from your hometown in Sacramento. I lived in Oroville, CA. I plan on visiting Vietnam regularly before I retired to scope out a place to retired. I was there for a month in October of 2018. Next time I am in Vietnam I will look you up, buy you a coffee and seek advice on retiring in Vietnam! Joel.

Hi, I am a fellow expat. Been here in Nha Trang for four years now. I started out in Saigon but got out as soon as my 6 month lease was up. My costs are relatively similar to yours except for rent. I live in a new three bedroom, three bathroom unattached house right on the Cai river in the center of Nha Trang. It came fully furnished with garden areas and a patio that goes out into the river. There is a second kitchen in the garden area. I pay $390 USD a month plus utilities. It helps that I am married to a Vietnamese woman who pushes me aside and haggles over the price of everything. I am Canadian but lived in Mexico for 14 years prior to coming here so I am very used to the expat life style and will never return to Canada.

I've watched this video many times. My plans are to retire 10/18 and fly to Phuket, Thailand on November 22nd...I'll spend about a month there, then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia...After Cambodia I'll visit Vietnam for the first time.. From your video and an article in International Living magazine I think I'll visit Vung Tao. You did a great job explaining everything and who woldn't want to watch the sun rise from that patio.....thanks for the video....

I worked in VN for 3+ years in Da Nang and Hanoi and it was by far the best country I have ever been to in my working life. I loved every part of being there and it's the only country that I still keep in touch with people I met there even after 10+ years of not working in VN. Many of the friends I met still ask me "Why you don't come and live VN". It's a great place, I have even met a few Vn vets that have returned to finally try and find peace in their lives. Just got get out and meet some vocals their really nice.

Very nice view lookin out of the apartment, the apartment is nice has every just like it here in the U. S . I would love to retire there too, Vung Tau is where I born and most of my relative still livin there. I came to the U.S since I was 10 , but now I living in Louisiana . Da Nang is a nice place to live too. I think you make the right choice, the price is not too bad, you get to see beautiful view everyday and you can go to the beach for a little swim, not to mention the foods is so good,. Hi Barry, I enjoyed your videos on Vung Tau. I was there from Sep 1964 to Jan 1966 when I wasn't TDY all over the country. I was from Rach Gia in the south to Danang in the north. Of all of the places I visited I liked VT better than the rest including Saigon. I went back to VN 2 years ago last Nov. to look at some of the places that I went to. I couldn't believe that Front Beach had a barrier there and there was no beach. There was a lot of fishing boats (Sampans). We used to go there and have a unit party every now and then. I rented a motorcycle for a day and rode around VT and I went to Back Beach (Bia Sau) and all that was there was high rises and private beach clubs. We used to get a Bigggg lobster or a fried crab that was about 12 inches wide with Potatoes that tasted like they had been cook in motor oil for $1, yes $1. I never got sick on that and that was the first time that I ever ate either one. I went to Nha Trang on my last visit and they wanted $40-$50 for a lobster. I only saw small crabs (about 6 inches across) and I asked the sea food shop owners "What happened to the big crabs?" They all told me "All Gone". I guess that they were over fished or trapped and ate. I stayed in VT for a week and only met 2 Americans there . Their are a lot of Aussies there (that is a different story). The only place I recognized in VT was the Grand Hotel. All of the US military places were closed to outsiders, including the airfield at VT. I had in my mind that there would be a lot of military and police everywhere in the country, but I probably only saw about 30 and never went through a checkpoint. To me traveling in VN (I rode buses, which are very nice with Wifi everywhere. I felt a LOTTTT safer there than I do here in Arkansas. I stayed a month and had no problems getting around. The people couldn't understand what few word I new in Vietnamese with a southern twang. I've rambled enough here but the country is cheap (except for the seafood) and the people a re a lot more friendlier than they were over 50 years ago. I'm trying to talk my wife into going there with me again for about 2 months and run around the country. Good Luck Barry and live life to the fullest.

I have insurance in the states. Hopefully i can get home if something serious comes up. Otherwise it's pay as you go for me. I am lucky I haven't had any problems since I've been here. Expat insurance is available but it was too expensive for me.

You know you have gone native when you have your own baby chairs as furniture :) I used to live in Saigon and have visited Vung Tau many times. My wife is Vn so I am able to get 5 year visas. We moved to the states and while I love the states I kick myself in the rear daily wishing we never did. I always tell her that if we move back it will be Vung Tau or Dalat. Probably Vung Tau since it is just so easy to get to Saigon if need be.

Very nice digs sir. Thanks for taking the time to show us first hand what the dollar will do in that part of Vietnam. You have obviously gotten around the language barrier which is good to see. I have only been to the Philippines and Thailand and especially in the PI there was no real language barrier so that increases the comfort zone for me. I think after I get my retirement set in place in about 6 months I am going to spend a couple months in Vietnam as a tourist and see if it makes sense for me to call the area home for maybe 6 months of the year. Thanks a lot for getting back to me so quickly. I appreciate it. You're absolutely right about the fires. It's terrible. I think that they are finally getting a handle on the Carr fire. Yesterday they said it was 65% contained, or 35% wild, lol. The smoke is still terrible here, but I count myself fortunate. I did have to vacate my house for a couple of days, but no damage. So I'm grateful for that. Some of those mountains look like they were hit with Napalm. It's ugly. Yes, the way that I get my money there is a concern. I don't think I would be inclined to open an account there. Like you I have direct deposits and have had them for years going to my credit union in Pasadena. I haven't had any problems with that and I don't think I would change. I wondered about ATM's there. I suppose you can't use them though because of the exchange rate is always changing and then there would probably be a pretty substantial fee to. I also watched your other video where you were out riding on your bike and running errands. When you said you were going to the bank I thought this must be telepathy. That was the question I had posted moments earlier. But of course, you had to cut off the film after you greeted the girls. Riding around town there seemed like it was almost like some small town here in California. But you did say that the weekends the traffic is considerably busier. For me, I would likely just go there for a short visit like you might have done the first time. Then I could check it out and see what I think. I'm not one to just jump right in. In any case, it would be an interesting trip. Oh, how are they with credit cards? Do most places accept American Express, Visa, Mastercard? I know a small shop probably wouldn't accept them. I doubt places such as your motorbike mechanic is set up to take credit cards. This might seem crazy to ask, but what about the Internet. Obviously you use it. But the language. Can you select a Home Page like MSN.com or FOX.com and have it appear in English? I know you know about the Carr fire so you must have seen that on the Internet. I appologize for the long email. I didn't mean to overload you with questions, I hope you don't mind. I did subscribe after watching your video so I'll continue to watch. Damn fine place for roughly $600.00 all in. Cannot beat that, especially with the fantastic views you have. We younger folks can learn a lot from you guys!!! That is why I am always chatting with older guys when I travel as they most likely have been there......did that.

I love Vung Tau. I go there twice a year, from California. The beach is nice, the water is around 82 degrees, but if you like to surf, like I do, there's never any good surf here. The people here are very nice and the girls are beautiful. Great value for the money here.

Good day again Vung Tau rider, Ive been there in Vung Tau City working in PTSC MC site for fabrication of TSJOC well head platform (Trung Son- PetroVietnam Talisman Petronas joint operation) in on shore/ off shore projects. The other job was in Ba-ria Vung Tau in Power plants as Mechanical Engineer. My activities there in that City were to find restaurant for my meals, sometimes bathing in sea, most was going jogging walking hiking going to Christo Ray/ Christ the King monument and im contented to see my Lord Jesus, that was year 2011-2014, im here now in Davao City, Philippines where I lived and ive got some few photos of Christ the King in our Altar and His figurine..what an experiences ive got there in Vietnam, it will always be remembered thru out my life until the day my life disappear, thnx......God bless.

I spent several weeks TDY in Vung Tau in 1971 at the airfield. Even during the war it was a very nice place and I have always wanted to visit it again.

For a similar apartment like that in Canada, it would cost you $2700/month not furnished. Fyi, you should use "google translator". Just type what you want to say and translate that to Vietnamese and hit play and the computer would read out loud for ya. Very handy.

Vung Tau is nice but Con Dao is absolutelyy amazing !!! Make a trip there and you will fall in love with the island !

Good video....I was there in 69 with the 1st Air Cav...Vung Tau was a in country R&R center...I didn't take my R&R there I went to Bangkok...;D...We did fly over the area in are Huey and I must say they had the nicest bunkers I have ever seen....It looked very secure...I'm retired now for 5 years and make several trips a year to the Philippines and Thailand....I'm planning my first trip back there later this year...You have a great apartment.....

Vung tau is beautiful town. Was there 2 years ago visiting relatives. The sea foods there fantastic. Good thing is Saigon is not far if you missed the city

Rider, I to was there during the war, I was there in 1970-71. I found the people very nice and the country was beautiful. I was in Da Nang, so I am partial to there. I wish I could go back to see my kids there. I have about 240 kids there now.

it's actually pretty expensive, I pay 600 € in total for a 2 bedroom apartment (60 m²) right in the center of a 500,000 people town in Germany. Are normal VN people able to pay that much?

Nicely done.....and a good place to call home.....I lived in Manila, but will look to Vietnam or Laos to retire. I am a scuba diver. Probably not much clear water in Vietnam... still I ageee nice people and look forward to seeing Da Lat again. Ron in Seattle

I am from San Francisco, California. I lived in Ben Tre, Vietnam a little over 2 years. I paid $0 on rent, $1 electricity and a 2,500 square meters pond to swim with free fish for dinner.

I was stationed in vung Tao in 1966 us army.i was at the army air field at vung tao.i flew on cv2 caribous.i flew all over Vietnam.

I spend from $1300-$1500 per month for everything, which rent and utilities taking the most part. I save a little each month, and can live anywhere in the world. Singapore would be my choice for the safety and cleanliness. I have a 2 bedroom apartment, with pool, man made lake, exercise room, and tennis court. The landscaping looks like Acapulco, but the apartment is drafty in the winter, which means duct tape and blankets up to windows and the doors. I am 75, great health and a widow. I travelled and worked from ages 7-70. Enjoy your life, for we take nothing with us. I have made arrangements for my cremation, and even filled out my death certificate. I do enjoy my apartment with all my books, tapes, writings etc. I thank God for 6 years of safe retirement, although I keep my windows and doors blocked, but a big fat pink guy had the keys to the apartments and tried to come in about 5 times at all hours, and he knew I would have given him a dirt nap.

Hi I have a question. I make over a thousand a month. On a scale of ten what would be the quality of life and atm machines. ATM cards and what are the problems involved and how to retire there with out loosing your USA citizenship? Oppps a lot of questions here.
