■ SAIGON, VIETNAM: After driving around in Saigon's sweltering heat heat for 2 hours my patience was wearing thin. I'd been looking for a street barber so I could get shave but without success. The time was ripe for compromise. I thus opted for an open air barber in the poverty stricken district 6.
The shave went as expected but as I was leaving I realized that this was a family run business and that the barber was living on premises with his whole family. This I had to investigate....
■ QUESTION: Who is better? Vietnamese or Indian barbers? Let me hear your verdict in the comment section.

Harald, I served in the American Army in Vietnam. I was there for 3 1/2 years. At our outpost near Dinh Quan we had a Vietnamese Barber who went by the name of “Bill”. That wasn’t really his name of course but one he chose to simplify things. Bill the Barber would give me a shave once a week. He stretched and pulled the skin over and over to expose the facial hair and the shave was so close and exact it wasn’t necessary to get shaved more than once a week. He was truly amazing as a barber but more so as a person. I remember every Christmas Bill would put on a celebration for our unit complete with a band, Tiger beer and an amazing fireworks display at midnight. He did this at his own expense. We made sure he was very well paid and his family cared for. His kindness knew no bounds. Unfortunately Bill did not fare well after the war. The regime didn’t act kindly to anyone who worked for the Americans and they knew everyone who did. I am very pleased that those dark years are over and the government has lessened restrictions to the degree Vietnam is prospering again. Maybe someday I will go back. Many veterans have but I don’t know. My experience with the Vietnamese people in the villages and hamlets was always a positive one. I’ve always had an interest in other cultures and in discovering the innovative ways they accomplish things in their daily lives. I guess this is why I find your adventures so interesting. Thank you.

I was traveling to Philippines in 2018 and people there have similar living conditions.Seeing this made me feel so sad for them.Despite such extreme poverty they're still very friendly and positive people. teicix I agree and disagree, it’s easier to enjoy the little things in life when everyone around you also has nothing, whereas in a bad neighborhood in America you’re discriminated against and are looked down upon for simply existing. So it’s no wonder why everyone in the ‘hood’ is pessimistic. I’m not saying we don’t have it better, I’m just trying to expand upon why we aren’t all walking on sunshine here. It could be worse, but it also could be a hell of a lot better too. Edit: fixed a typo or two
