I was 8yrs old in 1980,& remember these No.1 songs through the 80s. Was a treat to wait for "Ready to Roll" & see these clips. I had my own taste back then (funk,early hip hop,reggae & electro) but loved NZ music with a passion. Nearly 50yrs old now,living in the USA for 30yrs,but it's great to see these again A part of my musical journey from 8yrs old to 18yrs old,& remember the words clear as day Thanks for the upload One luv Uso's🤙

Fantastic video! It's always very interesting to see which songs went to number one in smaller countries like New Zealand. Joy Divison, for example, had 2 number one hits, something that they didn't achieve in any other country. Thanks for the great work! 😎

I'm a Kiwi, born in 1980. When The Cats Away, The Holidaymakers and Margaret Urlich bring back very vivid memories... of course, as a kid I had no idea that they were "just" New Zealand artists. And 'Slice of Heaven' by Dave Dobbyn + Herbs is one the quintessential songs of my childhood. The nostalgia is REAL. Great vid!

MJ had many top 10 and top 20 hits in New Zealand-so really doesn't matter! I would only not believe it, if none of his singles or albums charted in New Zealand or got to number 57 in the charts there.

Yes it's strange - he had quite a few number 2's here in the 1980's - Billie Jean, The Way You Make Me Feel and Bad. He had six number one's in the 1990's though - Black or White, Remember The Time, Give In To Me, Scream, You Are Not Alone and Blood On The Dancefloor, so I guess it kiiiind of balanced.

Thank you for this video, it gave me some great memories from my childhood. We seemed to have some questionable music tastes in the early 80's. I grew up in The UK and it's really interesting to see how well many of the songs you loved did in the charts in other countries. Also New Zealands population especially in the 80's was a tiny blip compared to The UK so I'd love to know on average how many copies a song actually had to sell to get to No1 in New Zealand. I remember Kelly Marie's "Feels Like I'm In Love" having to sell 450.000 copies in that one week alone to get to No1 in The UK in 1980.
@racketman2u3 жыл бұрын

I'm struck by how diverse this is. Seeing Joy Division hit the top not once but twice was awesome. I was soo youg then that i only remember select things. I remember that Funky Town in 87 was massive. I remember most of the local bands sounded just awful. So much so that when something local came out that was actually ok (like Crowded House or Peeking Man) people went mad for it because their first thought was "Hey this isn't shit!" (If you want to experience what i mean, try watching 'Pulsing' by Body Electric or 'E'tu' by Upper Hutt Posse and see how long you last).
