You missed a lot of context behind Volibear. He's actually the result of a long-stand internal Riot war between two individuals; Riot Zileas and Riot Voli. (You notice the name similarities? Well a lot of League champs were based on Rioters themselves; Ezreal, Tryndamere, Zilean, Volibear, Veigar, etc.) Voli was the one who pushed for an Armored Bear hard. Whilst Zileas was vehemently against the idea. This spread to the forums where the two would frequently butt heads. Eventually Volibear was revealed and released and the rivalry expanded in game with Volibear having special interactions when killing Zilean and both champs getting a hidden buff icon when against each other similar to Jinx vs Caitlyn/Vi.
