And that applies to you too! I would not give my dog anything that I would not eat. Well, let me clarify that, I don’t eat red meat but, I do feed my dogs organic red meat and/or very clean meats without antibiotics and steroids, and non GMOs! I eat clean and so do my pets. The better they eat, that’s far less trips to the veterinarian. Also, I they don’t get annual shots either. I have done titters which is a lot of money especially when they are still covered!

Hi Rachel, Thank you for this amazing video! I have a question, my 9-month goldendoodle doesn't like the kibble. Now, I cook his food once a week. But, my only concern is that I'm not sure if I'm giving him enough. I usually mix it with his kibble. It's the only way he'll eat. Since he's allergic to chicken, I prefer salmon, turkey, and lean ground beef. I like to rotate the protein once a week. I add sweet potatoes, green beans, brown rice, peas, and carrots. I also give him 2 tbs daily of Greek yogurt. Am I doing ok, or should I add more things?

I was feeding fresh homemade food to my 5 pups and senior dog. I found a vet approved recipe with turkey, broccoli, carrots, sweet potato, spinach, and coconut oil. They loved it, and i loved it for them. They were more active and had shiny coats. I started becoming worried that i wasn't feeding them enough and if they were getting the proper nutrition. Also that I would make a big tray that would only last me 3 days so i had to constantly make more. I recently switched over to open farm, which is pricey as each bag is $78 for 22 pounds, and I need 3 of them to last the puppies a month. I really want to incorporate the food I used to make them, but how much would you recommend feeding them? Is open farm a good brand, in your opinion?

I have noticed since switching my cocker spaniel over to raw and steamed vegetables, he doesn't drink nearly as much water as he used to. I believe it's because he's getting it from the new way of eating. His crusty nose cleared up to 85% in 1 1/2 months, now 6 months later his nose is 99% healed. The bloat was almost immediately gone.

I have 5 Goldens and it gets pricey trying to give them all cooked meals from companies. I work a lot so no time for me to cook. Can you recommend a dog food or something that i can give them that's more natural vs kibble. All my dogs are 80lbs. Or maybe half of cooked food and a very high quality kibble i just don't know how much the portions per day etc. It's frustrating trying to feed them good food. I was thinking of feeding raw but not sure if they will like it all of them are super picky.

I have 4 dogs ranging in age from 16 months to 16 years. They all eat a raw diet that includes organic chicken eggs, organic quail eggs, whole herring, organic fruits and vegetables, organic yogurt, etc. It is becoming increasingly expensive and I can understand why people are feeding kibble. In my case, I am the only human in the house, which helps me to be able to afford a raw diet for my pack. No one is judging us on what we feed our pets, but rather how we treat our pets! Providing them with a safe, happy and loving home is the best thing we can do for them 🤗.

It all depends on breed. I have mini schnauzers and I have to be super careful with fat content as they are predisposed to pancreatitis. I tried raw but they got quite sick due to the high fat content. So back on kibble they go but adding stuff in it.
@laurenmichero9003
@laurenmichero9003 Жыл бұрын
Kibble isn’t good for any breed. Once you learn about what they can get away with putting in kibble, you’ll never want to feed it again. I can elaborate but I don’t want to get too graphic unless asked. My dogs have had pancreatitis but they can eat raw fats and lean cooked meats. Raw fat is not like cooked fat. It takes a while for their systems to get used to new food after having been on kibble for so long. If you give pumpkin, slippery elm, etc then it helps their stools as they adjust. Dr Harvey’s runs be done is great too. Also Coptis tea pills help with bad diarrhea as well. Gently cooked is a great option as well. Sometimes they like it better and can tolerate that a little better. Viva Raw is obviously raw but it can be gently cooked and the meats are leaner. All Provide and Raised Right are also good options especially if you’re looking for gently cooked. Kibble is not better for them. If you can get through the temporary GI adjustment to new food then their overall health and well being is worth it in the end. My dogs have had multiple bouts of pancreatitis over the years and not once since transitioning to gently cooked/raw food.

I agree with you. It depends on the dog what they can handle just like people. My dog can not handle a pure raw diet. Just like with my health issues I physically can't eat certain things. Not all pets can eat the same just like all people can't eat the same. I feed kibble, but add toppers to my corgi/Chihuahua mix food. I don't feed crap kibble. Not all kibble is the same either.
@laurenmichero9003
@laurenmichero9003 Жыл бұрын
@@jeannettebarnes2193 I would suggest gently cooked if raw doesn’t work for your dog. Weening dogs off of kibble can cause GI upset but that doesn’t mean they can’t tolerate real food. It just means their system is used to processing the kibble and needs time to adjust to any new foods. There are plenty of human grade lean meat meal options out there. Adding real food to the bowl is great but if you give your dog about 7-10 days then it should be no problem to feed human grade Whole Foods. Kibble is extruded no matter the brand unless it says freeze dried or dehydrated or air dried. They put animal bi-products (junk that humans won’t eat), rotting/decaying animals, diseased animals, euthanized animals complete with the euthanasia drugs still inside their systems, etc. unless it’s human grade real food then any kibble will have these kinds of things in it. The extrusion process also eliminates most of the nutrients which is why they have all of those synthetic vitamins and minerals they have to add back in. It isn’t the pet parents’ fault…it’s the deceptive marketing of big pet food brands. The traditional vets don’t know any better either because they aren’t taught much about nutrition and what they are taught is to sell overpriced kibble and prescription diets 🙄

I wish these expertises would have more back up to their claims. I’m not saying they’re incorrect but i feel like a reference to why there would be disagreement would speak more to the expertise. What studies have shown that the raw food is superior or shown the opposite? Why are they reliable/unreliable? What of this is based on supposition because of dog anatomy and what is based on study? What is anecdotal? Expertise should be able to define these things. I feel like this is more of a “do this” and not as complete an education.

Kibble is a mass produced diet that hasn’t been around that long while dogs have been eating fresh Whole Foods for centuries. They’re basing their arguments on their personal expertise because both Rachel and Dr Morgan have studied nutrition and they know that a raw or gently cooked diet is what dogs are supposed to eat (aka species appropriate diet). There are some studies but they may be more limited as far as their prominence on the internet than other dog food related studies because big pet food brands are the ones funding and promoting the studies. They have a vested interest in what studies you’re seeing. They can conduct studies in ways that effect the outcomes, and pet food brands fund these studies to skew the results in their favor. They don’t want competition gaining too much traction because that means major profit losses for them. Pet food is big money and so they make sure to get the results that they want and those are the studies that go out to vets and pet parents. They usually compare kibble to other kibble rather than kibble vs fresh food diets. They want to scare people with talk of salmonella exposure when actually there have been many more recalls of kibble for things like salmonella and elevated Vitamin D than there have been for raw or gently cooked commercial pet food. Salmonella is really more of a concern for immunocompromised people than Pets but kibble brands have actually killed dogs by overdosing them with synthetic Vitamin D. There may be more anecdotal evidence for raw/cooked vs kibble but the evidence is definitely out there if you’re going to look for it. Healthy animals with shiny coats, flexible joints, and plenty of energy and that’s all after changing what they ate. Kibble is loaded with carbs, synthetic vitamins they have to add back in, carcinogenic properties due to extrusion, animal byproducts, and even diseased and euthanized animals being used as the protein sources in kibble. They don’t have to disclose that they’re adding these undesirable ingredients like euthanized carcasses but they most certainly are. Human grade food is always the best option. 1 in 2 dogs are likely getting cancer at some point and one of the main contributing factors is poor diet. Look into Dr Judy’s background and other prominent voices in pet nutrition like Dr Conor Brady, Dr Karen Becker, and Dr Ian Billinghurst. They’ve written books about pet nutrition/diets with plenty of references to both relevant studies and anecdotes that point to fresh food being far superior to any kibble out there. Believe me you can go down a rabbit hole with tons of information if you look into topics like pet nutrition, BARF diet, etc.

Hi!! I have several more “in depth” videos on this topic, and there’s plenty of research readily available to the general public. But your comment is a big reason I started my “Vet Chat Series,” where I bring Vets & Pet Health Experts to share not only their research, but their real life experience in the field! I hope you stick around to learn more🙏 As for studies, this question is always interesting because I often wonder, why do we need “research” to tell us that real, fresh whole foods are healthier for our dogs? Especially when you consider kibble has only been around for ~100 years.… Again I’m not anti-kibble, rather, I’m anti-ONLY kibble for all dogs. I believe there are affordable & accessible ways to “boost” our dog’s bowl. In fact, the Veterinary field is the only medical professional that (largely - not all) insists that their client eat the same overly processed foods for their entire life, with little to no variety. When we step back, we realize this doesn’t make sense… A few studies below but plenty more when you search online. Oh, and i recommend you read the book: “Feeding Dogs: The Science Behind the Dry Versus Raw Debate” by Dr. Conor Brady www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC340283/ academic.oup.com/tas/article/4/1/442/5660976?login=false pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29024089/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34733904/ www.researchgate.net/publication/257197022_Effects_of_drying_temperature_and_time_of_a_canine_diet_extruded_with_a_4_or_8_mm_die_on_physical_and_nutritional_quality_indicators pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36082767/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36082767/ www.researchgate.net/publication/334895084_Substitution_of_a_commercial_diet_with_raw_meat_complemented_with_vegetable_foods_containing_chickpeas_or_peas_affects_faecal_microbiome_in_healthy_dogs

No offense but I don’t understand prefacing these videos which are clearly about why you shouldn’t feed kibble with a “we aren’t anti-kibble” trigger warning. Actually Yes we can be anti-kibble if it’s the extruded cancer-fueling junk food that most companies are pushing on unsuspecting pet parents. If it’s the feed grade “food” that they sneak in euthanized, diseased, decomposing animal carcasses in. We know euthanasia drugs are bad for Dogs because it’s what vets use to put them down, but we don’t know how much worse those toxic chemicals become when processed with high heat during the extrusion process. How much worse or more toxic do they become at that point? It’s frightening to think about. Heck yes we can proudly be against that recycled garbage they try to pass off as “food”. It’s sickening and killing our beloved animals. You can still be in favor of the kibble-like dog food made for convenience like air dried or freeze dried or dehydrated dog food from companies that source humanely and/or are human grade. Raw or gently cooked food whether it’s homemade or commercial is likely better due to the moisture content but at least the freeze dried is better quality if pet parents prefer to prioritize convenience as one of their top criteria when feeding their pets. I proudly say I’m anti-kibble. If anyone takes issue with it then I think it’s better to just explain your position rather than preemptively placating potentially offended commenters with a broad statement that doesn’t educate or empower them to make better choices when feeding their pets. They’re much less likely to take issue with a confident well-informed individual’s position on traditional kibble once they realize how manipulative and deceptive the kibble/pet food industry is and what they’re really passing off as nutrition for our pets. People need to wake up and get educated because I thought I was feeding my dog the “best” kibble on the market, but how many pet parents are unwittingly feeding their animals food that is slowly poisoning them? Most pet parents unfortunately. I say save all of the damn dogs…which includes getting as many of them off of the kibble as possible.

I think people like Dr Billinghurst have the right approach to this because he doesn’t hold back when it comes to being unequivocally anti-kibble and I appreciate when people just come out and take a stand like that. There are so many alternatives now that people really should discourage others from feeding their pets kibble and educate them about why so many of us are now anti-kibble. @@MoonlitPurpleRose not really. The pet food industry and its regulators have higher standards for raw/gently cooked than they do for kibble brands. They basically have a zero tolerance policy If you buy human grade raw or gently cooked. Just look at how they went after grain-free foods by saying they caused DCM then FDA quietly added a disclaimer to their site saying that there wasn’t actually a link between the two. Conveniently this was after Mars (yes the candy company) bought the devalued Champion pet food brands (Orijen, etc) which were hit hard by that accusation. Those grain free brands lost a lot of business and then as soon as Mars bought them then conveniently grain free wasn’t so bad according to the regulators. The major dog food brands are owned by Mars, Nestle, Smuckers, etc. Isn’t it strange that the candy companies are now the ones telling pet parents what is healthy for their animals to eat? Anyway, if you get human grade high quality food (humanely sourced meats, quality veggies and fruits preferably organic, well balanced meals with Whole Foods rather than synthetic vitamins added, companies that frequently test for pathogens, etc) then you’re much less likely to come in contact with pathogens. Dogs often have salmonella present in their gut and they’re fine. If you handle raw or gently cooked food the same way you handle raw meat from the grocery store (wash hands and surfaces after handling) then you should be fine. Happy healthy animals are much less likely to carry a harmful amount of harmful bacteria than conventionally raised, confined unhealthy animals that have to stand shoulder to shoulder with other animals and are surrounded by their own waste all day. There have been more recalls for things like salmonella in kibble than there have been with raw/cooked pet food. Even human grade raw meat from the grocery store has some allowable levels of things like salmonella because they believe people will be cooking it anyway. Dogs have a very acidic stomach and a short GI tract so it is unlikely that they would be effected by simply the presence of a pathogen. I think pet food brands want to scare pet parents so that they can damage the reputations of their raw/cooked competitors and ensure that pet parents are too scared to buy anything other than the kibble they already buy. So basically no I’m not afraid because I buy good quality raw & cooked for my dogs and I know how to handle food with a low risk of contamination to my family including my dogs.
