My first horse cost $500 bucks, she was bomb proof, great at team penning, excellent with kids. Her name was “Champagne”, but kids were little and called her “Shampoo”. Gave her away to my cousin who had kids. I moved up into team roping and bought more expense horses($3500 average). To this day, best horse ever, I miss “Shampoo”.

@@Maple_Springs Wow you assume I'm ignorant about horses. I've been with horses since 5yrs old. I was trained by professionals who have show horses. I'm more than aware what a horse costs, as mine are professional. I jump, foxhunt. I work closely with my equine vet. Insurance for the death of a horse covers it completely I've purchased horses through out my life. Been in the horse world for 45yrs. Once I owned 4 at the same time. My horse have linages including Native Dancer, Nasrallah, Hyperion, Swaps, etc. Yes I think I know a little about horses. I'm not a back yard owner riding only on weekends. My world is horse 24/7. Is there anything else you'd like us know. I also have a library full of horse topics. Training, jumping, breeding, foaling, problem horses, conformation, etc. Also 3 books on vet care, & knowledge of diseases. My life is horses. Pls, never assume someone is ignorant about horses. My Dad, an old time real cowboy, told me more than 55 years ago something I've never forgotten about the VERY BEST WORKING HORSES! It's as simple as this: 'It's not a stud horse because the only thing on a stud horse's mind is a mare! It's not a mare because the only thing on a mare's mind is a stud! It's a gelding because the only thing on a gelding's mind is his work!!!' I have found this to be one of the most reliable, steadfast truths about THE VERY BEST WORKING HORSES OF ALL TIME!!!!

In 1995 I went to the Premier Paint Horse Sale at Will Rodgers arena in Fort Worth. I wanted to get my 13 year old daughter a show horse for 4-H. I found a beautiful paint gelding by the Roan Ranger, APHA champion. I got him bought but I had to spend more than I have ever spent for a horse at auction, $3100. My daughter showed him til she got married, won a lot. We kept him awhile around the place just because he was so good and anyone could ride him. He was too go9d to keep in a pasture though, so we offered him to a therapeutic riding facility. They tested him and he passed so spent the rest of his life with easy work and meticulous care from facility personnel. He was the reserve champion mount at the Chisholm Trail meet for handicapped riders one year. After that we saw him on a commercial for the place on TV, being ridden by the reporter. He was also a star on the TV show "Horses that Heal". He was a great horse and a popular mount for wounded veterans and handicapped children and adults.

Christine, it's wonderful that you were careful to ensure that he went to a home where he would be appreciated and treated accordingly! It's so important to be cautious who to sell or give a horse to. I have a lot of admiration for the places with the Therapeutic Horseback Riding Programs. I hope to volunteer at one of them very soon. As soon as my own health issues are sorted out. I'm sure the horse was/is well cared for there and happy. To have attention, mental stimulation, and a moderate amount of easy work is far better for an aging horse than just rotting in a feild is. However being a pasture pony is far preferable to being sold to a bad owner, or to a long series of owners, and ending up in the meat auction. When I was a kid we used to say they ended up at the glue factory. Whatever term you use, the fact is that horses that people don't care about live an extremely stressful life, with a lot of fear. Sometimes they are auctioned multiple times, each time being scarier than the time before. Many of these magnificent animals, who are so willing to do almost anything for us but sadly can't tell us what they experience, go through a downward process of being a lesson horse, then a dude ranch horse, and finally are just a commodity, for meat. And they are shoved with other horses from trailer to trailer, and place to place, with no regard for their feelings, or their comfort, or even their health. Illnesses and injuries are not treated. Worming, hoof trimming, and dental care are no longer done. The result is chronic pain and illness. And they are horribly beaten and abused! When you see videos of them you can see how terrified they are! The end of the road is the kill auctions, and the actual slaughter, both of which are the most horrific thing that any person or animal could ever imagine! That is the end result of people carelessly selling off horses, just because they are old or didn't get along with the owner, in order to recoup a few dollars. People, PLEASE. If you cannot afford to keep them in your own pasture and give them proper care, then PLEASE give them up to a Horse Rescue Organization. If they can be rehabilitated and rehomed, the organization will do so. If they are too old to be ridden, there are people who will be happy to keep them in a pasture, and to continue their veterninary, dietary, teeth and hoof care. But when their time comes, and they are too old and sick, they will not suffer. They will be put to sleep with love. And you will sleep well, knowing you did the right thing for them. Horses are very intelligent, so they're meant to have a lot of variety in their experiences and life. No matter how big it is, any pasture will feel small to them after about a week (or less), and it will be extremely boring, even if they are with other horses. So a horse that is capable of having a job should have one, and when they are too old (or lame from illness or injury) they still need to be properly cared for. Just selling them off to anyone, for money, is a cruel thing to do. So is dumping them in a feild and neglecting them. Living in a pasture is NOT the same kind of healthy life that wild horses have, and your own pasture horses still need plenty of human attention, for many reasons. Some horses are even put out to pasture alone! How awful for them! We need to treat aging horses as we would wish to be treated. To just sell them off like an old car or dirt bike is a horrible thing! I see may very good, caring horse owners on YT, but I do see some awful ones who make me terrified for their horses! Please people! Do not just get rid of any horse! Even if you and they had a bad relationship for some reason, please understand that is likely because they either have health issues, or they were not properly trained, or they were abused. Horses only behave badly for those 3 reasons. And like any person, they deserve to not be tortured. Selling them to just any old person DRASTICALLY increases the odds that they will resold again and again, and end up in the kill auctions eventually. Never forget that there are Horse Rescue Organizations all over N America, that will help if you can no longer afford to take care of your horse or horses. Everybody should watch a few episodes on the KZfaq channel of Horse Plus Humane Society. It's an enormous eye opener! (Please excuse the fact that this post is a little bit disorganized. I am now out of time. I will try to remember to come back tomorrow and fix it.)

bought my first horse for 150 bucks. He was a two year old buckskin who jumped out of any fence, even a 6 ft metal pole pen, to go join other horses, if he was lonely. He was a pest for ranchers. I ended up in national and international competition in eventing. He could also do a 16.5 barrel run! I sold him at age 9 to a student and he won the Texas State Championship. He could do reining, and dressage. My next horse I bought for $350 bucks a 16.2 leopard app. Not very many could stay on him if you lost your concentration, well he would leap up in the air and kick out and it could be a long way down. Beautiful mover. He sold for 5 figures and I went to graduate school.

We had a jumper back in the day who was an ex-bucking horse. We got him on a whim when a rodeo contractor called & said he had a bronc who wouldn't stay in his pen, would we take him? That horse would jump over a stall guard, jump from paddock to paddock ~ fences 4'6" with walkways between paddocks ~ everything. He wasn't easy to ride, rudimentary steering at best ~ but he never, ever stopped in front of a fence. It was like point & shoot. The only times that horse didn't pin were on his frisky days when he'd as soon jump out of the show ring as jump the obstacles. At one of our last shows, he raced through the jumpoff ~ we'd won ~ then bolted out of the ring & down the hill. I think I was able to stop him about a mile later. When he retired, we turned him out with all the other older horses. Once a week, neighbors would call & say, "Please get this monster out of my garden. " True story!

Beautiful stud there. He's just so sweet looking! "She's gentle in the shoot," *bucks like a fuckin' maniac trying to kick off Mr. Dale*
