Amazing work! The blue tint is probably because of backlight failure. They either used low cost LEDs or overdrive them too much and the phosphorus that converts blue to white light deteriorated. Also interesting to see how much LCD quality variation there is.

Probably, there is tons of LED streetlights that turn blue (phosphor layer/coating degrading,letting the blue LED's shine through)

The blue spot failures are pretty visible on every bar LCD around playing hockey all day. Basically seems to be a never ending cycle of getting blue enough for replacement and then in a matter of a year or two the blue returning.

Most of their LCD TVs are of the budget end as well. Almost all of them are Fire TV, and Insignia and Samsung "crystal" (low end crap) and TCL low end and so on. Only 900A and 90B from Samsung and the "frame" are of so called higher end. Their testing methodology is also to much of the same content. Like literally the same footage. Even if they use the same "channels" that content would shift a bit. But here it's the same segments over and over and over. Of course both OLED and LCD will take a beating like even normal use with twice as many hours wouldn't.

A lot of LCD manufacturers use a blue led light, and then apply red & green filters.... They do this because white led lights have too much colour temperature variables in manufacturing.

I've always wondered why people believe this. An expensive car won't last longer. An expensive house won't last longer. An expensive watch won't last longer. Sure, there's a point where if you buy *the cheapest* of something or choose something off-brand it might degrade, but once you get into lower-midrange you're in the clear. Going upmarket means you're dealing with people with disposable income who value the latest-and-greatest over longevity.

The expensive Samsung Q90 had a very splotchy image from the very beginning. Recently, two of the background LEDs started flickering and turned yellowish. Unfortunately, they started to work alright again after I called the Samsung service and was told that I still have 1 year of warranty left. I am pretty sure the LEDs heard that and will fail again once the warranty has ended 😁 Also, the work you are doing is awesome 😊

I agree. All reviewers focus only on new products. They get new TVs in, review them, tell us how great they are, and send them back to the manufacturer. CES comes around and they tell us how excited they are. The new TV's come in ... wash ... rinse ... repeat. Not one of them offers even the slightest hint at reliability. This torture test is providing real insight into problems that one might encounter after just a few years. And, they are uncovering implementation issues (like pixel refreshing) that can be fixed by the manufacturers with firmware updates. This was sorely needed.

My 4 year old Sony LCD used to set the LED backlight fully on high in HDR mode with no way to turn it down. A recent update now allows HDR brightness to be adjusted. I used to worry about burning out the backlight, and now possibly turning it blue, but at least I can control the backlight now.

It is not so difficult to understand: higher speeds, faster decoding, more brightness and all this without fans or really new developments. At the end, the generated heat wears everything even faster off and the more sensible elements (LED/OLED) and light diffusers/liquid Cristal also get in trouble. I think the best thing is: - have a smaller cheap TV for constant news/people watching TV for hours a day - a high end TV for TV shows and movies - for regular TV programs, set the brightness to medium or even low - maintain the room temperature as cool as possible and a noiseless fan behind the TV spinning low: it will maintain the TV cool. Avoid wall mounts.

led lights that illuminate the lcd panel also have weaknesses. if you set the backlight to 100%, they often have a short lifespan. the yellow coating in the led bulbs can also be worn by the heat and become thinner so the blue ultra violet shines through so the image becomes more blue. you got oten light spots over the screen since led bulbs offte shine brighter in the middle. some of the problems they have managed to get rid of or reduced

Yes, and this test isn't natural to any TV tech. Including OLED. It's a loop of exact same content where it will show the exact same images in the same spots over and over with same intensity. There is no variation despite using "different" content. I'm not sure but they might have it cranked on all TVs the light that is. People usually don't have that at all times.

The LCD issues pointed out in this video I see very often, especially on cheaper TV sets. It seems to be a backlight issue in every case. The uniformity getting worse is probably due to LEDs in the backlight regions individually failing. In my experience with leaving some Vizio TV sets on for a few years straight, the individual LEDs will fail first, followed by entire LED regions, followed by the TV's power supply (perhaps the LEDs are turning into wires rather than diodes?) Anyways, some food for thought.
@jonathanparle8429
@jonathanparle8429 4 ай бұрын
I would love for that to be the case since backlights can often be replaced. I have a spare set of backlights for my 10 year old LG that is now exhibiting uniformity issues. I have not got around to replacing them since I am party scared I will ruin something but it is getting to the point where soon enough I would have nothing to lose anyway. The fact that the worst uniformity issue is a vertical strip did have me wondering about the backlight but I still struggle to see how a backlight can cause this dirty screen effect. To me it looks more like the backlight itself as degraded something in the panel. Afterall, I would have thought backlight issues would cause much more random uniformity.

It would be interesting to know which of the LCD failures were TV's with blue led blacklights using quantum dots to convert to the various colours. That quantum film wears out over time and the smaller blue dots go quicker than the larger red. Normal white LED backlights with colour filters will probably last longer.

@@vanCaldenborgh Well all my normal LCDs never had any issues, they all look exactly like day 1 after many thousands of hours of use. My 2009 LG led IPS LCD tv, my 2011 Samsung 1080P led LCD TN monitor and my 2015 4K Samsung led LCD VA TV look exactly like day 1 but none are HDR or have high brightness. I'm guessing the high brightness is what's permanently burning the front layer matte or semi gloss anti reflection coating or maybe even screwing the first light reflective white layer and maybe even the colour converter layer. Ps: I just bought a Hisense U8KQ and this is looking scary, hope it doesn't go bad any time soon at least for the next 10 years as I luckily never had a single led LCD fail on me yet, also this TV heats like crazy even just being ON at the dimmest backlight option which isn't great since I'm guessing high heat is likely what's causing Mo's of those issues.

I notice the same thing. It actually has me thinking that an OLED with a properly sorted maintenance algorithm would actually maintain far better uniformity for longer. I am thinking of going OLED just for that reason but I am struggling with a solution to all the classic 4:3 content that I watch (other than running those OLED full screen burn in patterns on KZfaq every week). I am prepared to compromise on movies by zooming and very slight stretching to get rid of the black bars but there is nothing you can do with 4:3 content - the bars are just way too wide.

Considering that every OLED has developed severe burn-in and only about 1/3 of the LCDs are showing signs of wear, most of which is only visible in test slides, I would say LCD is much better than OLED for durability purposes. Proven without a doubt at this point.

Literally nobody expected anything else, though. However, I think many (including myself) expected the LCDs to do far better still. For both display types, it's worth reiterating that the test is already up to 7200 hours, meaning if you use the TV for 4 hours a day, the current state of the test is at about 5 years in. And since the test is at 100% brightness *and* with static content, it's a worst case scenario in addition to that. If you use your TV sensibly (less than 100% brightness, not 100% content with huge static elements) you'd probably have less wear in 10 years of real usage.

These TVs are not on a factory shake table. The only vibration they get is rolling them out of the row for a screen test. But sometimes just the shock.of heating and cooling will let the lens or the phosphors fall off. Do they let them cool to normal ambient room temperature, say 75? With all the TVs running on high, they will be putting off some heat.

Been using Samsung LCD TV as computer main monitor for... 13 years? Long usage time, can say average 12h a day, whole year continuesly. Yes I am hermit / hikikomori. 😭 Luckily, no color issue. It just the edge become darker (about 1cm distance have dark gradient), a couple subtle small dark dots I not sure if they are just dust or mold (not noticeable in regular usage), or pixel falure? Also slight burn in on the taskbar. Can still tolerate it... still usable.

My 3 year old 50" Moresense U7QFTUK is a real champ! Panel is the most perfect I've ever seen on any TV. After careful adjustment, picture and sound are the best I've ever seen and heard. I'm often told by the Moresense naysayers, how bad the brand is, but clearly my TV doesn't know how "bad" it is? 🤣 Happy viewing everybody! ... My viewing certainly is! 👍 EDIT: I also have a 22" Samsung from 2011, which is as good as the day I bought it 13 years ago! ANOTHER EDIT: 16 year old 42" Panasonic Plasma from 2008 ... Yep, you've guessed it! 🤣 Guess I got "lucky, lucky, lucky" as Kylie would say? 👍

Thanks again for pointing things out. I am starting to think of replacing my lg oled c7 after 5 years of use (games/series/movies). The subtitle region has a bit burn in. But lcd are not holding much more lifespan according to these tests. Modern electronica are better than older with regard to performance but not with regard to lifespan. My previous tv lasted 8 years. I now know I have to replace a tv each 5 year so I will be in my budget / savings.

Well my 7 year old LED 900E with 25,000 hours would like to have a word with you. It's still flawless in all tests. Realize a lot of the TVs that fail here are low end models with crappy backlight and LCD panels. They cut corners or they couldn't be sold as budget. The more disturbing problems are the slightly higher end ones. But that seems like random. Also this test they are doing isn't natural to any TV Technology OLED or LCD. It's the same content loop all the time and they have them cranked to max if I recall correctly.

@@loki76 you are just lucky Most modern tv’s just fail after some years. Just as other modern electronics. I bought the lg c7 in 2018, a high end tv with a high end price. Now it starts failing on burn in in the subtitle region. Strangely what does last long are iphone(s) long updates and no screen burn.. Its also oled panel, made by samsung but special order for apple and also some things are not the same as on the samsung phones themselves.

My TCL R648 QLED is used primarily as a PC monitor and it already has light burn-in of a couple Windows taskbar elements. I've had it less than a year and haven't clocked very many hours on it, but it is showing light retention of the taskbar. My three year-old Samsung Q70R has it too. You'd never notice it in actual content but you can see it faintly in a medium or dark gray slide. Some think only OLED is susceptible to burn-in, but my LEDs would beg to differ.

oh thank you so much for this. this has been my experience with lcds over time, and people never believe me when i say my oled is actually outlasting most of my LCDs in picture degradation, with so far my 2010 plasma being the best at not degrading (still looks brand new, though probably dimmer than it was, idk) ever since CRTs. my 2013 samsung tv that i used as a monitor barely lasted 2 years before it became completely overtaken by dirty screen that was visible in any content and became unusable to me.

After over 50 years in consumer electronics i am always interested to see how the latest models and panel tech compare to earlier models. The biggest mistake with LCD models was the change to LED backlights, driven hard at high brightness levels make make a TV look stunning when new, but as those LED's start to fail, the image becomes unwatchable. I have a Pioneer Kuro Plasma that is still giving an excellent image and looks great with an HD source, this is one area where the 4K panels often stuggle, the inbuilt upscaling is often poor and renders them useless with lower resolution images. My point is that newer is not always better, keep that brightness and contrast down or be prepared to buy another TV in a couple of years.

Tind or backlight issues I fully expected withg LCDs. Especially the ones with more dimming zones to have more issues with tint makes sense given that the LCD is subjected to more heat and the backlight to more temprature cycles. But what I *wasn't* expected was image retention issues. Sure, LCDs also can suffer from TFT drift, just like OLEDs, but LCDs can make use of pixel inversion which should make TFT drift a non-issue 😲

it's crazy how much of a difference a single year can seem to make, looking at TCL 5 series in particular, i see that the 2020 model year (the s535, i actually own this model myself, so good to see it continue to rock on with no issues) is listed as no issues, but then only 1 year later, the updated 2021 model(the s546) is in the "showing issues in real content" section, makes me wonder if TCL really dropped the ball that hard on the upgrades for 2021, or is that just bad luck on your own purchase you made

I have an almost 20 yr old (2006?) Philips plasma. It's just 720p. The cheap remote with rubber buttons stopped working. That's all. I did get faint burn in because I used it 4:3. Slight red tint, I believe only visible against green background. Think football field. It disappeared quickly when I used it in 16:9. Which all broadcasting is in since long. Still great colors and contrast, though resolution is pitiful. I paid $1500 or $1800. About mid-range at the time. Cheapest were around $6-800. Horrible 480p LCD screens.

As someone without any income, I am in the unique position of being stuck with an obscure Samsung TV that I rescued from a FedEx store. It's a commercial product designed specifically for businesses that want displays to run text walls for years and years. I wonder how long a display such as mine would last in this test. Also interestingly, during the video I found myself judging people who would tolerate a horribly tinted display, or those that wouldn't even notice the difference, but once I scrolled to the comments I remembered the 8 inch white gash on the bottom of my screen, and some terrible irony set in. Anyways, incredible work on these tests.

Great video, thanks. Of concern is Sony's top models like the 2022 flagship (X95K) having test patterns issues that will only get worse is not a comforting thing for spending that much money on flagship product. But I noticed none of the examples were of Sony to see what was showing in test patterns. It would be helpful to show per vendor issues in test patterns that could highlight if Sony's issues are in an area of great concern to a potential buyer of their next flagship model.
