1 Year with the NEW Specialized Crux: Is it Worth buying in 2023?

So many fast gravel bikes have come out in the last year: The Allied Echo, the BMC Kaius 1, Willier Rave SLR, the Factor LS, the Trek Checkpoint, the Canyon Grizl SLX, and the Scott Addict Gravel... is the 2022 Specialized Crux still relevant a year after it launched? There are also a handful of road bikes like the Enve Melee that have tons of tire clearance and can act as a do-it-all bike, all competing against the Crux. And with the Crux basically being the Specialized Tarmac SL7 on gravel, is it still worth buying a year later?

Your reviews and updates on the crux are what sold me on my build. I went with a crux frameset and swapped over my sram 10/36 cassette and made it 2x but changed the front crankset to a praxis 48/32 with pathfinder pros in a 700x42c. I recently got the 22' S-Works Crux Pro, and absolutely love it. I switched out the front ring to a 44T and have a 10-44 on the back. I got a pair of Roval road wheels for when I just want to do road riding, but the Roval gravel wheels works fine on the road too. I had to switch the rear deraileur to a SRAM XXI Eagle in order to accompany the 44T front ring with this setup. One thing I didn't like about the pathfinder gravel tires was the lack of bite on the turns in the dirt. They slide more than all knobby tires, so I switched them out. I enjoyed the video!

I’ve been riding a 2022 crux for about 6 months now as well. I wanted a quiver killer just like you wanted out of yours. Thank you for inspiration! Right now I have two setups that require 5 minutes to completely transform the bike by simply swapping wheels. In general, I started with an expert model and swapped the rear mech out for a Force XPLR, added a Force WIDE crank with Quarq PM, 44T chainring, and a carbon handlebar. Road setup: Roval Terra CL with 28mm GP5000’s - 10-36 cassette (this shaves over a pound off the bike and feels excellent on the road) Gravel setup: Roval Terra C with 42mm S-Works pathfinders - 10-44 cassette (feels like you can just about do anything with this setup) With the 44x10 as my fastest gear, I can still go 35mph at 100rpm cadence. Plenty for most spirited group rides. And funny enough, the 44x36 for my road setup is still a slightly easier gear than my 36x28 on my dedicated road bike. Only thing annoying about 1x is the jumps between gears, but you get used to it over time.

Really leaning towards a Crux in the future, ordered a Norco Search XR A1 back in 2020 when I had just started cycling (mtb) and was planning to use it to try road, CX and gravel. Before it arrived I ended up getting a road bike and racing road. Now that the Search arrived 2 years later (this spring) I have raced gravel and am currently racing CX with it and post CX season am going to put 32c tires on it and use it for long winter Z2 rides in crappy Canadian winter conditions. If I were to do it all over I would prioritize CX performance and as a small guy (76cm inseam) my options are a bit limited for CX race rigs (49-51cm frame with standover

@outdoorbros_ Жыл бұрын
What’s up, Ivan? Thanks for the kind words. There’s no denying that the flat strip plays into off road grip when climbing, especially while seated. In my experience, that’s probably one of the few drawbacks of the tire and I wouldn’t trade increased rolling resistance for a file tread center. Just my two cents.
@ivanyhtang
@ivanyhtang Жыл бұрын
@@outdoorbros_ that's a very fair point! Like you, I have to ride on road to get to the trails so it's always a compromise for me. So far, I've leaned towards more knobby tires so I always have enough grip off road but it's definitely slow on road. Cheers
@lenolenoleno
@lenolenoleno 2 ай бұрын
@@ivanyhtang Tread pattern has the least effect on rolling speed (after compound and casing). The Tufo Thunderos have tread down the middle and roll faster (according to BRR) than the Pathfinder (even the S-Works model). Downside is that puncture resistance is less on the centre tread (so if you ride lots of urban areas near bars etc with glass/construction then the Pathfinder may be a better choice). The Tufo's are also half the price of the S-Works Pathfinder and weigh the same.

@outdoorbros_

That’s a tough one. The “SL7 feel” is hard to replicate. You’ll notice that the crux isn’t as stiff and the handling isn’t as precise- it it were, it would be a mess on gravel. I rode my SuperX against my buddies Crux S-Works, both very light, both same size and fitted with Ear. They ride quit different. The crux is longer in the front center but its steering is more twitchy, as the SuperX has a slacker head angle and shorter top tube. He said to him the SuperX felt even more like a road bike. It felt to me that the Crux was a bit stiffer than mine. i now have a second set of wheels with 28mm road tires. That makes it truly two bikes in one.

@@outdoorbros_ I've built a crux on road mode: all SRAM RED AXS XPLR (44 + 10/44), thomson carbon seatpost and bars, flite boost superflow saddle, dt240 hubs, 50mm carbon rims, gp5000 28c tubeless... it's not the s-works frame and it's a size 58 but without pedals or accessories it is 7.1kg. You can easily make it lighter. Very solid bike... I only have to swap tires and it's ready for gravel. I've done 4500km so far with it (mostly on the road) and it is amazing. Geometry is like a road endurance bike, super comfortable but still "roadie". They have asked me 3 times what model of Aethos is that colour... LOL Lateral stiffness is pretty good (way better than the s-works, BTW. I'm big, it's important). I'm quite competitive but I'm not sure about road racing with it though... you might want something more specific for that. About the gearing, if you're more road oriented, I'd go with a 46t chainring (which is the max for this frame with the 68mm BB). I run out of high gears when I go with the A group guys from the club. If you're much stronger than me, you can go with a wide crankset and a 48t chainring, that would be equivalent to a high 53chainring with a 11 sprocket and a low 34 chainring with 32 sprocket. you could go bigger than that for crit racing, but crit racing on this would be pushing it a little bit too far... :D If you don't have a decent cadence range, the 11 to 13 sprockets gap is around 15RPM difference for the same speed, not really the big deal shimano talibans make of it, but... whatever... in my opinion, if you can't cope with this, you basically suck at cycling :P I think a 46t chainring would be perfect for strong riders, I mean for an all road bicycle or a do-it-all gravel/road bike (if you're not bikepacking with a lot of stuff or doing MTB trails) and a 44t for the rest of us.

"Pretty normal dude" who rides 7,500 miles per year, sure! 😉 Chris, what would be really interesting is to hear from you how you manage to put in these miles, e.g.: 1) How often per week do you ride? Long or short rides? 2) How often do your ride in the dark? 3) Do you ride always the same routes (i.e., focus on exercise) or different routes (i.e., focus also on experiencing something new)? 4) How do you balance riding with your responsibilities in the family and at work? 5) Do you take rest days? 6) How much do you ride in the winter? Indoors or outdoors? 7) What kind of "dumb" activities (e.g., social media, TV) do you skip almost completely to have that much time for riding? Etc. I ride about 5,000 miles per year and go to the gym twice, and I wonder how I could increase time on the bike even more, as I just love it. Agree with your view on the Crux. I now have the Aethos and the Crux and no need for any other bike. They are just both so much fun.

What's up, Bastian? Hahaha- I have some flexibility to sneak out on lunch rides and dawn patrol on the weekends has been a life saver. The trick is finding friends who are willing to leave the house before 5am :) I'll put together a video on this because I think my perspective is a bit unique... 1) I ride 5-6 days/week, sometimes in the morning and at lunch during the summer (200 mile race in September= high mileage). Saturdays in the Summer are always 80+ miles, usually home before 10am. Having a trainer makes a lot of this possible. I can jump on the trainer at 5:30am and be done before 7am. 2) In the summer, quite a bit. I stick to safe roads, stay in groups and use a bright headlight and tail light. 3) A lot of riding is the same routes, inevitably and exploring usually happens during the winter. We have routes we like and tend to stick to them. 4) Super supportive family, but I'm also hyper sensitive to family and work demands- I try to get ahead of them before anyone says something. If my wife asks me to be home by 10am, I try to be home by 9:30am. If I feel like I've been away too much, I make the call before anyone says anything. So far, so good *fingers crossed* Err on the side of what really matters. 5) Sunday is always a rest day for me. 6) Inevitably, winter brings "cold" and dark mornings, so I see more time on the trainer. I used to have a love/hate relationship with the trainer, but now enjoy it quite a bit. During recovery intervals or recover days, I spend a lot of time answering emails, catching up on work and it becomes a very efficient hour. I'll probably do more lunch time rides during the winter this year, just for my sanity. 7) I feel like I'm pretty normal here, not consciously cutting out a lot of that stuff (although I admit that I should). I guess I don't watch much TV, that could be one area where I'm different with disposable time. Overall, I think just finding what works best for you, your family and work schedule. Early mornings are huge. 5am-7am is a nearly untouchable time slot for me- if I can get out of bed and workout, it doesn't mess with anyone else's schedule and I start the day with a win and 30-40+ miles. I'm also just a more productive and happy person when I exercise, so I tend to push myself a bit more with the end in mind. Anyways, this is the longest comment response- hope it helps! Happy to answer any other questions.

@@bbde1980 Riding the bike is great, but make sure it's not going to mess up your long-term goals if you plan to get married and have a family. One of my best friends became obsessed with running and cycling in his 30's and never looked ahead, so 38 years later he's still riding over 8k per year but he has no spouse or kids. Hi, ive been contemplating about the crux for months now. I currently have the sl6. The main reason i want to change bikes is that im no longer as flexible as before. I find riding the sl6 for more than 4 hrs fatigues my body. Will the crux give me a more forgiving or relaxed ride? Ive contenplated about the roubaix but it seems too complicated with the future shox. Thanks

I think it's a great option. If flexibility is a concern, you might consider larger tires and a lower tire pressure or a less aggressive bike.

Great video! Just bought a crux comp myself and looking to start upgrading it. I have a couple questions for you. 1. If you could only upgrade one thing to start what would it be? Wheels? Groupset? Handlebars? Etc. 2. I love your “everyday” athlete approach. As someone who works a 9-5 myself I still find it difficult to make time for all the cycling I want to do. Can you share how you manage your time and maybe even a bit about your career and how you balance the two? 3. If you could try any of the new bikes that came out this year which would you try first? I would love to try an Allied myself.

Did the same thing with my Crux Comp, in my opinion the first thing you should change is the wheels. The stock wheels are so heavy and really hold the bike back, put on some lighter weight carbon wheels and see that bike come alive. My final Crux Comp build ended up with Shimano Ultegra Di2, Farsports Carbon Wheels, Alpinist Cockpit and Terra Speed Tires. Final weight in a 52 was 15.8 lbs with pedals.

What's up, Tyler? I started to respond to this last week and thought I'd take a minute. 1) I think wheels and tires and probably the best bang for you buck. Not only that, but it's a difference that you'll immediately feel (I wish all upgrades were like that). 2) If you scroll up/down to Bastian's comment on this video, I went into quite a bit of detail. I think the key is waking up early, saying "no" to a lot of seemingly good things and having a family who is supportive of endeavors. Block out time for lunch rides as if it's a normal meeting- that was a big one for me this Summer. Having a smart trainer has also produced some efficient, early morning hours where I can knock out emails and easy communications during rest intervals. 3) Allied as a brand has always intrigued me. I'm not totally sold on the idea of an aero bike on gravel, but I'd like to give the BMC Kaius a shot. Ben Delaney did an awesome video on that bike- seems interesting.

My favorite bike I’ve ever owned. Not to mention, the bike is extremely easy to work on, knowing the hoses aren’t integrated into the bar/stem and it has a threaded BB.

Don’t know which one was born first, the crux or the aethos and in both cases those two should have been one bike. Like road tires and you have a road bike and the gravel tires and here you go. Selling those two as two separate concepts/distinctive uses does not cut it for me. I see them both the same and love the sl7 as the racy feel is always welcome and priceless.
@marcowalther7867
@marcowalther7867 Жыл бұрын
The Aethos came first and it had some very particular objectives: as light as possible, good ride comfort, not a race bike. That worked so well that the same frame concept was applied to the Crux remake. Both were conceived in Peter Denk's design office in Freiburg, Germany. The naked Crux S-Works frame is a thing of beauty. Never saw such a cleanly constructed carbon frame. The inside I saw was super smooth.

@@mohamadjamil3164 Hi there, my take is: those bikes are made for the few who have the cash to spend. They wouldn't necessary take into consideration how beat up they are after a race as long as they go fast enough. The route of the worlds was having a lot of paved roads. Running 40mm rubber makes you slow on tarmac.

If you lean super heavy road and very light gravel, I think it’s a viable option. I also think the gravel worlds were best described by Ben Delaney as, “The Bike Path World Championships,” in which case, the Roubaix was probably perfect.
