The drainpipe holes never go up. Do you expect the water to focus on these while running downwards :-). Instead they must go to the bottom slightly angled, since they shall allow rising standing water to get in an flow away.

J and A, It must be very entertaining to read all these criticisms and advise leveled at your efforts and these videos, when you have already completed the next 3 or 4 projects of your house build. But here is tip #3, that you might still find useful:- When you are installing the service entry pipes/fittings through the concrete floor or walls try encasing that last piece of pipe in plastic where it passes through the concrete and don't put any adhesive on that last connection. this will enable you to pull that vertical stand up piece out of the concrete when your come to install the final fitting, such as a toilet flange, etc and you can then easily cut it to the exact required length, apply glue to the end and replace it back in the last fitting. Perfect fit ! Keep up the good work and God bless you both.

Check the video at 8:34, you will see that they installed the pipe with holes up and that's wrong. THE HOLES NEED TO BE DOWN. If you watch youtube channel appledrains , they will show HOW A FRENCH DRAIN WORKS. This is something Jesse should have watched. I don't know where he does his research, but he is usually wrong and then says " we " did it wrong.

I am here in Afghanistan, hoping to one day build my own house in Mississippi,(very different than yours) but it is very interesting the work and rework that goes into a "First ever attempted" project even though you have all the skill sets and requisite knowledge to accomplish all the tasks. Without repetition, steps are not only forgotten but also placed before others (i.e; your ICF walls and the 1" cascading problem monster!) Just know that I am watching you religiously over here and wishing I was there to help out (for no other reasons than to be the Smoothie barista.) Theses will be incredible stories for your kids and grand kids...stay the course and hold fast through the rough patch...sunshine is on the other side.

I'm a retired building contractor from the UK and have great appreciation and admiration for you both. A great work ethic, respectful to each other and thoughtful. So I hope I'm wrong when I say that from almost 4 decades of experience I think you "may" have water/damp problems with your tanking. If I was you I would stop and pay to have this inspected as if you have a problem further along it will be a nightmare to fix. All it takes is one break in the continuous waterproof seal your trying to achieve and it is a fail. The number of joints is a worry to me. The other thing and much more important is that you and others are working in the tight space between the high soil banking and the foundations with this unstable soil not being braced or shored up guys. This is really dangerous if the soil collapsed while anyone working in that area it could be very serious! I hope you take my comments in the spirit I am giving them. I want you both to succeed, you deserve this and are a wonderful example, I just want the best for you both and you stay safe.

Hi, I am not a builder, but I think the idea of the bluewotsit membrane protection is to shed water down to the gravel/screen/pipe. THe aim is to not allow water to pool against the membrane - I have seen plastic waffleplate used to create an air gap drain space directly against the membrane... Your use of foam strips glued to the membrane with nice waves of glue...will create a lot of pooled water traps... Keep up the work, I am wishing you well. You are doing things I can only dream of !

A comment for those watching and contemplating doing something similar. The holes in the pipe are 120 degrees apart and are supposed to be on the down side when installed so water doesn't have to rise much to go into the holes. There needs to be a grade in the pipe for the water to flow, preferably from the back to the front and out. The filter fabric is a good idea. I think I would have used a heavier filter fabric; it comes in several thicknesses or weights. I was on a construction project where several thousand feet of the corrugated drain with a sock was installed with deeper backfill than this. The pea gravel was carefully placed over and around the pipe before the trench was filled. As long as heavy loads are not run over it the pipe should be OK as the pipe is being supported evenly all the way around.

Putting the fabric around the pipe initially is a very good idea. We commonly use weeping drains that come with a sock pre installed around the pipe. It will be a last barrier to fines getting through your other fabric and the rock. Also since you are using very small rock, it will keep them out of the pipe as well.

I used flexible corrugated drainage pipe buried 15 feet down and covered all the way up with drainage metal. I ran a drainage camera through recently and after 15 years there is no sign at all of any damage to the pipe through crushing or anything else for that matter along the entire 40 feet of the pipes run. You guys are doing well but an old phrase comes to mind - LESS haste MORE speed. You are doing way to much decision making on the fly and leaving aside the monetary cost, the biggest expense is your time. I live in a temperate climate and can build all year round - apart from a bit more rain over winter. You don't and therefore time is likely your most precious and scarce resource. Another old phrase comes to mind - A stitch in time saves 9. You should INVEST time in planning and preparation e.g. spend a reasonable period of time each week planning what you want to do and then working through the details of any technical requirements to do with your requirements and the products you are planning to use by researching the manufacturers specifications. It will absolutely save you time and probably money. If you have a problem getting definitive answers on how to use a product, look for products that are used in a country like New Zealand (believe me a lot of US products are used there). All residential construction in New Zealand must be built in compliance with the building code (no exceptions) and if a manufacturer wants to sell there product here, they have to provide full installation instructions that they warrant will deliver compliance with the building code so long as those instructions are followed.

Your only layer of protection from the filter fabric is the one you put on top of the rock. You need to keep the clay from turning your rock into concrete. If you keep the mud out of the rock it will allow water to flow freely and will never threaten the drain tile with plugging.

Why was I sitting on the edge of my seat thinking they would place the perf pipe with the holes up? I made that same mistake the first time I put a drain behind a retaining wall. It was explained to me before I buried it in gravel. The inspector would have required me to dig it up and re-do it. We learn by doing and from our mistakes. I wish I were there on site to help them with this build. I'm no longer able to do too much physical labor due to a heart condition, but as a licensed building contractor with an additional classification of electrical contractor in the state of California, and 32 years working in and around most of the trades, I feel confident I could stop most of these mistakes before they progress too far along. BUT... just because I am a contractor or have experience doesn't mean I know everything, and am first to admit it. I have absolutely no knowledge or experience with this method of forming with the foam. Someone here claiming to have 72 year's experience working in the industry, then claiming the pipe has to be primered and glued is completely wrong. NO PRIMER, NO GLUE! Period. Explain to me how a joint can come loose with the enormous weight placed on top of it. It's a drain, not under pressure. This pipe fits together so tightly it won't leak at the joint. Jesse and Alyssa, I admire your determination and hard work. I've learned things from you I had no Idea about. I anxiously await each new video. If you haven't placed your concrete yet, take some time to go over every little aspect of the work and forms. Be darned certain you won't have blowouts. Brace the snot out of your foam, especially where you've cut the internal plastic form ties or filled in gaps with the canned foam. Concrete is unforgiving. The higher you go, the greater the pressure at the lower levels. Good luck to you on your build.

If you do get alot of water hitting that back wall, you can make a swail above in the treeline to force the water around the house so it hits the sides. The idea is to get that water around the house. It is a good place for your excess rocks and dirt. Water diversion is done in china for a thousand years for irrigation. A vee shape would be pretty easy. I have not had to mess with my swail for 26 years. Your architect probably has done these. It flash floods here in central texas. One area around here had 1 mile of water that got to 4 feet high. It got in the nation news. From the vids, I don't know how that drainage is. The commercial builder built a house across my driveway and ignored the little waterfall that use to be 30 feet from the new construction back door. 15 acres of runoff that bounced around my house and naturally drained to the new house put 8 inches of water through his back door, through the kitchen and out the garage. When you do your chimney if you get high volumes of water like that, I found I needed to reflash my chimney to 1 feet from the room as the water bounced up under extreme rain ( I was up there with an umbrella and swimsuit). It would go under the metal flashing that was put in the rock. My 25 cents worth.

Every bit of water hitting that hillside, will be heading down to the house. They had best try to divert it around. However, these 2 don't seam to follow sound advice, so next year we will see videos of water in their basement.

And that's why sump pumps were invented. If you're trying to make a livable space underground, it's going to be damp, no matter how much plastic you wrap it in. Water gets in everything, it's what it does best.

Great work. I moved two yards dirt and 3 yards mulch almost all by myself and thought I would die. Gravel? No thanks.

everyone makes mistakes, and if the builder doesn't mind living with those mistakes so be it, but I hope if they ever sell this house I hope there will be full disclosure (KZfaq link) to the new owners. Inspections are for a reason, not just to protect the builder but to protect the future owners and neighbors.
