I would’ve guessed that 10lb was the most controlled . Especially With how it seemed to get to zero quickest . Appreciate the video , definitely gonna try the 9 and 10 lb out .

Do you know who makes the stock recoil spring? I've read that the ISMI springs test lighter than wolff springs of the same listed weight.

Great video! Have you considered adding a Mantis training module to the end of gun acting as a “dyno” to be able to show the data on a graph? This would give a very clear picture of the results, just a thought!

I need some help man . I’ve ran a little over 1,000 rounds in my XC and in the last 3-400 rounds I ran reloads and I’ve noticed it’s snappier than it was in the beginning. I stopped running reloads and cleaned up very well and still snappier than originally . Did I ruin my spring maybe ?

Very informative. Do you plan to investigate different mainsprings, or is the factory mainspring weight already optimized to your liking?

There's nothing to be gained on the mainspring adjustment. The issue dictating the spring changes is the lack of slide velocity on closure, which the mainspring would not help. In general I don't recommend users play around with spring weights on duty style guns as I usually see way more failure than success, but this gun needs a different recoil spring.

Just a quick follow up: what did you settle on? Did you stick with the 9 lb spring or go to 10 lbs? I'm going to pick up a XC and am trying to avoid beating the snot out of the frame with the factory 7 lb spring, so I was thinking 10 lbs vs 9 lbs. My buddy recommended 12 lbs, a la the P, but that seems to be overkill based on this video. Much appreciated

I noticed on the Staccato website it actually says 7lbs for the factory spring rate on the XC. That makes more sense to me that the 9lb would be so much better since it is 2lbs heavier instead of just 1. Since the guide rod is 5.0" did you just use government length springs?

I don’t love the reduced slide velocity if firing with gloves or compromised positions (in a fight). Suggest the P instead.

Did you mention what type of ammo you used for this test? We’re using 115gr Federal ball for the range and our duty ammo is Hornady 135 +P. I think staccato buffed up our recoil spring weight from the factory but I’m not quite sure what weight it is. Would a 9lbs be a happy medium between 115 and the hotter 135+P

We had one of our local SWAT guys pop up with what I “think” is the same version of this gun. RDS mount and port up front. But it carried the STI name. Long and short of it: I was suspicious it was under-sprung for duty. It worked. Zero malfunctions. So I have to acknowledge that. Upon asking, I think he said it had a 7 or maybe 8lb spring in it. That tripped my spidy senses even more. I feel his gun was on the edge of running. When done shooting I advised him to up the spring. I’ll pass this video on to him. Regards, Marky

With this small of a change in recoil spring weight I am guessing no changes to the mainspring needed to be made to compensate for this? Thanks and great video!

Has anyone ever tried using the light spring on the Staccato P would that harm your gun shooting factory loads? I have a cz shadow with lighter springs just curious if it different for 2011 pistols.

Unless you're shooting very low powered competition reloads, just stick with the standard power 13lb spring in the gun. Springs are rated for the work that they need to do.

Don’t own a 5” 2011 but the XC cycles faster due to lighter slide and flatter due to same plus comp. refer to video re heavy slides.

Great video. Does the XC include a Dawson Tool-less Guide Rod? I have one in my Gen1 STI Omni and I was wondering if it can try any typical 1911 style recoil spring.

Yes, it uses a Govt length 8lb spring on the Tool-Less rod. Check Ep41 for a run down on the XC's tech basics and how my gun is set up.

I was running 115g with no issues until I swapped to the 9lb recoil spring. Now I can’t even get 2 rounds out with it jamming…. 124g has zero issues with the 9lb spring. Any suggestions?

You would probably need to run the factory 7 lb spring or an 8 lb spring for the lighter 115-gr ammo. I mainly shoot 124-grain, and I'm going to be testing out the 10 lb spring.

@Big81Clos Awesome! I also have an Aimpoint ACRO P2 on mine and I'm guessing the extra weight was causing a tad bit of drag on the slide with the 7 lb spring. I'll report back after I shoot with the 10 lb!

@Big81Clos No issues with the 10 lb spring. Gun ran flawlessly even after being very dirty, and I like the authoritative snap I get when loading in a round using the slide-release lever. I EDC this in appendix carry, so I wanted a heavier spring for increased reliability.

Thanks for the videos Hilton. Is that a DVC magwell? I want to put something wide and beefy on my XL but I keep seeing online that Gen 1 magwells don't work on the new grip.

Yes, the factory is selling off old stock of DVC mag wells. It's not intended for the Gen2 grips but it fits and blends fine (most of the legacy mag wells do not fit or blend well on Gen2).

@jgarcia9011 Just got done with a range session using the 10 lb spring. I purposely did not clean the gun so as to test it while it was extremely dirty (to best attempt to simulate "duty" use). No issues.

Why do you guys insist on hanging a huge light under the gun??? Im very suspicious of the motives for doing this!!! Every video of this gun has used a large light!!! Does it NOT act as a barrel weight??? How does the gun perform without a barrel weight?????????????????

First, how about we dial back the tone. The bulk of my audience consists of LE users and those interested in tactical/defensive applications, and the Surefire X300 is the industry standard light. The guns tested in my other videos, and even the Glock 34 shown briefly in this video, all wear an X300. The addition of the weight of a light dampens some recoil but it's not affecting recoil characteristics in the manner in which you're accusing. The light isn't attached to the barrel, so it is not acting as a barrel weight like you're claiming. If the light were attached to the barrel....like the comp as I explain in the video....then it'd affect recoil in a significant way.
