When it comes to animation, we know we have our beloved Disney films to refer to. Disney set the bar high for animated films. Although Disney wasn’t the only one making cartoons at the time, he was the one who strived for perfection. There are now several major studios like Dreamworks and Pixar that now animated beautiful stories. However, when it comes to great works of art, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right? What if we told you that there were some filmmakers out there that took that to a whole new level? There’s a market of films that copy our favorite animated films, they’re called mockbusters. You might have seen these in bins at stores or even on Netflix. They look like our favorite cartoons but somethings is amiss.
Like Kung Fu Panda? Why not watch Chop Kick Panda? It’s a short film that rips off our favorite Kung Fu loving panda, Po. How about Tangled Up? It turns out this movie was just bad marketing. It’s not even about Rapunzel, it’s a collection of short stories, but that didn’t stop them from copying the cover art and font on the Tangled DVD. Another film that falsely advertised their movie was Kiara the Brave, originally called Super K. It was changed to cash in on the release of Pixar’s Brave. The Snow Queen also did the same with the release of Frozen. And don’t get us started on A Car’s Life, the blatant rip off of the famous Cars franchise. Snow Queen is not a rip-off of Frozen. It's one of the many adaptations of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale plus it was released before Frozen. The stories are SO different too.

Frozen is based off a book written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen....LOOSELY BASED in actuality both movies are rather loosely based off of the original story Frozen however is almost it's own story.

Even though "The Snow Queen" is a Hans Christian Andersen story, the Russians have adopted it and loved it for a long time. There have been many animated takes on it, mostly called "Snezhnaya Koroleva" (The Snow Queen). They're not copying Frozen.

Agreeing with everyone else, Snow Queen was not actually a Frozen ripoff. The plot also doesn't make sense because it premiered in Russian (later dubbed in English) and it stays truer to the original story.

Despite the 'snow' theme these movies are nothing alike. The Snow Queen felt like a movie made because the creators actually wanted to tell the old tale to a modern audience. Frozen meanwhile was made for the sole purpose of making money and toys. In summary: The Snow Queen is a million times better than Frozen sorry not sorry

Nah, Frozen is more of the classic Disney reimagining (tho originally it was suppose to follow the Snow Queen's tale more by the book), like how Lion King is with Hamlet. Snow Queen, from what I can tell, relays the whole kid story (which isn't bad, they're just different). I love Frozen, but neither is a rip off, you can't rip off the source material esp since it's free to the public. If you say either are a rip off, then all works based on Snow White or Shakespeare or any classic, are also rip offs. But you can't cause that's just silly.

I've watched Snow Queen and I actually really liked it, and so would other people if they stopped insisting it's a rip off of Frozen, which it shares actually 1% of the plot with (spoiler alert, everything freezes.) plus I love her pet weasel with all my heart.

Jesse Narwhals Frozen was inspired by the book, But Frozen and The Snow Queen movies(which are amazing) share no relation beyond that. Frozen was an extremely light take on the story, while The Snow Queen movies stick close to the original story, an evil queen with ice powers freezez the land. Niether movies are rip-offs, so Screen rant should have done more research.

Voted down due to the Snow Queen being included. I was very impressed with what the filmmakers did there with a very limited budget. So I am more than apt to forgive them for any plot holes and issues it may have. Comparing Snow Queen to Frozen is like comparing the Epic of Gilgamesh to the Story of Noah's Ark. Common origins, but are stories in their own right.

Frozen was in development hell and wasn't actually being developed as a 3D movie until after the original pitch of Snow Queen. At the time Snow Queen started being made, Frozen was still intended to be classic 2D animation.

Obviously, Ratatoing heard of Ratatouille was a up coming Disney film, so they went to work right away to make it seem like they created it after they released the trailers along with the date showing when it’ll be in theaters! So they didn’t have time to make it a huge thing but still had time to actually make the movie release in just 3 days before the actual movie 🍿

Actually, Frozen and The Snow Queen are both rip offs of the 1957 Russian Snow Queen, which is the movie adaptation off of Hans Christian Andersen's original story The Snow Queen. I have actually watched the original 1957 Snow Queen movie in Russian and Frozen and I can say that for some reason I enjoyed it much more then Frozen.

"Why is there a greenhouse in the middle of this iceland?" In the original fairy tale, the girl had to go through "Spring" where there sits a garden and she spends days there forgetting her original purpose - saving her friend. You can't call the movie a rip-off, it's more true to the original plot than Frozen. So yeah, if people knew the original fairy tale I'm sure they'd know why there was supposed to be a garden - albeit removing the time lapse from the original story.

Mind you that Disney had officially announced that they were making a 'Snow Queen' based movie December 2011 and confirmed the release date of November 27, 2013. Disney have been trying to develop the movie since the 1940's and the story was officially pitched and production began in 2008. This movie was first pitched in November 2011, THREE YEARS AFTER DISNEY pitched the story in 2008. This video here was made 25 July 2012, and it shows just how far along in animation the movie was: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLanrKiLnZzeimg.html The Snow Queen is a rip-off on the character design rather than the story (Though the story does have its flaws), the most notable example is Gerda's design in the third movie. Yeah, Snow Queen wasn't a ripoff. The reason why it's seen as that is because the American distribution team decided to make a DVD cover similar to Frozen's so that people would watch/buy it.

Actually “The Snow Queen” was released on December 31 2012 Whereas “Frozen” was released November 19 2013 The snow queen was here first @ me i dare u. Also why does everyone assume everyone is copying Disney the opposite is also true ya know

Aya Harake Walt Disney wanted to make a snow queen adaption all the way when he was alive, so shut up it took 5 or 6 years to make, that the trash movie (I've seen the movie and read the book) only took probably a year at most, it's the rip-off

1.) Snow Queen was released before frozen 2.) The film snow queen has a completely different storyline 3.) Snow Queen has a whole different set of characters So don’t blame that movie for copying because it wasn’t copying Frozen.

Donna Michigan - Nope. Frozen (2013) was announced December 11, 2011 [Bleeding Cool] and Snow Queen debuted December 31, 2012 in Russia [IMDb]. But Snow Queen did open in the US a month ahead of Frozen.

Snow queen was made before frozen and in the creds of frozen it says "INSPIRED BY THE SNOW QUEEN" so...

Ali Marie They meant "Inspired By The Snow Queen" as in the story, not the movie. they were both inspired by the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson (guess who probably got that wrong XD)

Everyone: Yes. The snow queen was released before frozen. When the animators of that film found how good frozen was gonna be, they whipped up something quickly and released it a couple months before frozen. The snow queen is still the ripoff
