Hey Trenches, not sure where to send you this info but it's likely you're sleeping on a band that released a killer album last year. Maybe I'm wrong and you've heard of them, but the album is Vexes - Imagine what we could destroy(2022). It's kind of in that metal/nu-metal resurgence that's been happening for a few years now, they have a bit of a Deftones sound mixed with Prog metal. This is an incredibly underrated band I hear almost nothing about, so it's perfect for a channel like yours. Maybe if you're compiling and appropriate list it would be useful. Cheers Edit: Oh, and if you have to listen to a single song off this, Dryspit. would be a good example

I'd say Amon Amarth has to be one for me. I remember getting into melo-death when I was about 15 or 16, and just fell in love with their stuff. Spent so many hours learning the riffs and lyrics from Twilight of the Thunder God. But it all started to become very paint by numbers as time went on to the point where I almost never listen to them now. I saw them live at a festival earlier this year, and that was fun, don't get me wrong, but they're almost never in my rotation anymore.

Like i said in my comment, Amon amarth are the AC/DC of melodeath. You know exactly what you're gonna get with one of their albums and they'll likely never recreate another album quite as good as their classic material. They're great live though.

@@speakerdestroyer425 Amon Amarth was the first band that I had in mind when I saw the video title. I totally feel you, I couldn´t get enough of them, but the last 4(?) albums have been so predictable, same formula over and over, couldn´t listen to them more than once. I still love to listen to older stuff, and hearing them in concert in 2019 was great, but yeah, time goes on and success has proved them right, I guess.

Man. I must be a heavily nostalgic person because, no matter how unexciting some of the 'legacy' acts are, I still go back to their best material with the same level of thrill! For instance, I think Metallica, Maiden and Megadeth are quite boring nowadays but albums like Puppets, Powerslave and Rust in Peace still feel amazing to listen to. I often go back to them when I want to take a break from the new stuff out there. That's probably why I still fire up 1996 Quake on my PC when I have some time to kill. Classics never die! And it's not like I'm stuck in the past or anything. I love checking out new bands and constantly do so. But the oldies but goodies are always there like an old friend. As for a band that has lost its edge nowadays, I'd have to go with Mastodon. Give me Leaviathan-Blood Mountain era Mastodon any day over the current snooze fest. Lol

When I got back into heavy metal a little over 5 yrs ago, I landed in the softer end of things -- symphonic & power metal. Listened to the heck out of it, eventually discovered melodeath (Arch Enemy was my first) and went hard in that direction. Years later, I still like the softer bands like Nightwish, Epica, Hammerfall, Powerwolf, but it's so strange listening to them now after getting into the heavier stuff. If someone would have told me 6 yrs ago I'd be a full-on death metal fan at age 53, I wouldn't have believed it, lol.. Nice Tshirt there, budz.. That new album by Cattle Decap is something else, isn't it? Glad to see from comments in other videos that you'll be starting a new job too soon. Cheers.

I think the only band from the list I feel I need to step-in and defend is Korn. I think their last four albums are right up there with the early work. I'm not sure what he brings to the table, but since Head returned they've stepped things up. One, very simple, change they have made is to make their albums a little bit leaner - metal albums don't have to be long! - and I wish they'd taken this approach to a few of the earlier releases in their discography...

The issue with bands that have longevity. There is usually a 2-4 album cycle where they peak. It's tough. They change their style, they are sell outs or dropped off. They maintain that style, it grows stale. Metal fans, we are a fickle bunch.
@martinfalk8597
@martinfalk8597 Жыл бұрын
You probably don't agree with me, but the way I see it, it's our duty as fans to stick with the bands through thick and thin. It's no different than supporting a sport team. If you only follow a band through their peak years, and check out when things get tough, how much of a fan were actually from the beginning? That's what posers do as far as I'm concerned. Real fans stick with the bands through both good times and bad times.
@michaeldoyle189
@michaeldoyle189 Жыл бұрын
@martinfalk8597 Easiest examples bands to use here is Metallica. Black album was a massive turn from their sound. This was followed by load, reload, etc. I'm not going to continue to listen to inferior albums out of a sense of loyalty. On the flip side of that is a band like Hatebreed. There was nothing different or innovative after their first 3 albums. It grew stale and I became indifferent. Bands like King Diamond & Slayer, even Kreator, have managed to keep their signature sound while also keeping it fresh over the course of their discography. Clearly their are eras where each of those bands peaked, but they managed to be consistent in their style while keeping it interesting.
@martinfalk8597

@@michaeldoyle189Metallica is a good example. I agree with you about the Black Album. Time has taught me that I'm not a fan of that album. The hard truth is that with the exception of Death Magnetic, there hasn't been one Metallica album that I've truly enjoyed since And Justice For All. On the other hand, this situation has also made me reconsider my position as a Metallica fan. Am I a Metallica fan? Well... If there's a big portion of albums that I don't like, I think it's fair to say that I'm not a huge fan of the band, and I won't talk about how much I love the band when that's not really the case. Metallica were once in my top 5 bands. Now they struggle to make the top 30 and if I'm being honest, I can see them sink even further on the list in the years to come.
@michaeldoyle189
@michaeldoyle189 Жыл бұрын
I also think there is a limited window for aggressive music for most artists. This is true in metal and rap, with some outliers, of course. There is a period where they are truly angry, pissed off, etc. where the song writing is top notch. The music has the right energy. The lyrics truly resonate. But if you continue to keep doing it, it can be extremely cringe and become gimmicky. Best example of this is Godsmack. While I never held them in high regard, there was a time when they were one of the right bands peaking at the right time. But when you are writing the same type of "go away", "stay away" type shit into your 50s, it's simply clown music. I think one way bands like Lamb of God or Slayer stayed relevant for years is by becoming a little more politically aware. I don't necessarily mean left or right. But recognizing that government typically has the interests of the machine as their priority and recognizing that the people are a means to an end and are nothing more than collateral damage.
@michaeldoyle189
@michaeldoyle189 Жыл бұрын
@martinfalk8597 the Black Album was huge and undeniable. But I absolutely see why that was the beginning of the end for those older hardcore fans of the band. But that album was also the gateway into the band for many more people. So the black album is a double-edged sword. I listened to that album so much as a kid I burned out on it. It was one of the first albums I owned, so I'd listen to it 2-3 times a day. Add in the number of singles that got heavy MTV and radio exposure and it's a recipe for burn out. I listened to their first 4 albums quite a bit, but I was listening to those albums with my brother whenever he was playing them. So they all had a chance to stay fresh for decades.

What I find with these bands and a lot of other bands like them is that there is a period where they're sort of on the edge of the abyss mentally speaking. I find that when a band is on the edge of insanity that they sometimes tend to create their best work, which is unfortunate, but it's the nature of the art. Trent Reznor is in a better place now than he used to be. Same with Maynard and the Tool crew. NIN and Marilyn Manson were both massive favorites who fell away for me by about 2001 or so -- Trent Reznor and his genius-level understanding and use of sound design in music was a revelation to me, and the stuff he did in that era still is. But as you and others have pointed out, that specific spark that made NIN so amazing and cathartic seemed to vanish by With Teeth. (It's to Reznor's credit, I think, that the music he produced seemed to have the desired therapeutic effect, and he got much of his angst and personal demons out, which was great for him personally, just not for NIN musically.) Manson, on the other hand, seemed to lose steam pretty quickly for me -- really, the two albums after Antichrist Superstar had no ooomph, as far as I was concerned, so I would only check in every few years after those and find the music and the lyrics getting worse and worse . He just seemed to be poorly rehashing what he'd already said (and said in a brilliant and theatrical way that was very important to someone like me who was trying to break free of the shackles of living in the heart of the bible belt south.). I'm glad I moved on, though, before Manson evolved into whatever the hell he is now. As I've gotten older I've asked myself if the work of these and other bands I'd once lived to hear really did change that much or if I did, and while I think both factors certainly partially the case, mostly the bands in question just stopped being as potent and powerful as they once were; If it was all just about me becoming an old man, then I wouldn't love Imperial Triumphant or Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or various and sundry acts I've discord in the last two or three years as much as I do. I respect bands who are self aware and self respecting enough to hang it up and move on to create other entities that are more in line with their personal growth as people and artists, but the list of bands that have done that seems to be a short one.

A very odd one for me is Soen. I really love their earliest records (Cognitive, Tellurian, Lykaia), but after Lotus, IDK, their sound doesn't appeal to me anymore. I side with this, too. I love their albums, Cognitive and Tellurian. Lykaia has its moments, but after Lotus, the band went downward. Their 2021 output was a huge step downwards from the material they had on their first two records, in terms of production and musicality. It felt like I was listening to a generic butt rock band that you would hear on Sirius XM radio. How do you go from Cognitive and Tellurian to whatever the heck Imperial’s production was?

Megadeth is a big one for me. I got into them back in the mid-2000's, really digging into their old albums and loving almost everything from their debut through Risk. Even Risk I liked, though I didn't love it. The World Needs A Hero felt like the first mis-step and though I really liked The System Has Failed, UA is where the band fell off for me and I've never really felt any desire to listen to anything since. NIN I agree with, though the time of their fall off is a bit different for me. I got into them on With Teeth (which I still like quite a bit), dug into their prior albums which I love even more, and when Year Zero came out, I didn't really like it and I've felt that everything since has been incredibly hit or miss. However, I do enjoy Year Zero a lot more now. Not as good as their 90's material but on par with With Teeth if not a bit better. Muse is another band I used to absolute love. Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, and Black Holes are all, to varying degrees, great albums. Resistance is good, but there's a definite slip in quality here and with every album since, with The 2nd Law being VERY hit or miss, Drones being incredibly boring, and Simulation Theory being a step up in quality, but still not great. I haven't even listened to their latest, but have not heard good things about it at all. Dream Theater used to be one of, if not my favorite band, but they've been all over the place quality wise for at least 20 years now. I still check out their newest releases, but more out of some weird sense of obligation. Mastodon is, unfortunately, another one. Love Leviathan and Crack The Skye, but nothing since The Hunter has really impressed me and unlike most, I really like The Hunter. Once More Around The Sun is alright, but I don't love it and both Emperor Of Sand and Hushed and Grim were just... boring.

Today, they are still a good band, particularly Alien and City, but I remember being hyped for The New Black and was disappointed. Since then, and their eventual disbanding, I lost them as my favourite. Chimaira. Again, getting into metal they were amazing. I actually still like them. Up to and including The Infection they captured my heart. Then The Age of Hell came out and I hated it. Still hate it. One of the bigger falls off a cliff I've seen. Good video. I guess Guns N' Roses would be this band for me. I got into GN' R many YEARS after their heyday (around 2000-01) and Appetite was my favorite album for a long time. I also loved Lies and the Use Your Illusions (I see where people are coming from when they say they're full of filler, but I dig most of the songs on both). I used to listen to them endlessly, then was so excited to hear Slash and Duff were reuniting with Axl Rose in 2016 and saw them perform in concert in 2016 and '17. Both concerts were awesome and they proved their naysayers wrong by giving their all into these new (at the time) shows. Now much later, I don't know what it is, but I'm just not into their music anymore. I don't hate it, yet also don't feel like listening to their songs and don't feel excited by any upcoming shows or any news surrounding them. They've just become a nostalgia act playing their old hits (practically the same set lists) and not recording *ANY* new material. It's like how many times can we hear the same old songs from Appetite and the Use Your Illusions? GN'R are this big name band, yet their entire legacy is built of 3 full-length albums, an EP and a cover album? I'll always have a soft spot for them due to nostalgia, but I've seen moved on to discover other bands (most of whom aren't riding off 1-2 albums from 30+ years ago).

Personally, once I've digested everything there is to digest from a favourite band, which means listening to every album many times, then I phase them out to make room for some new stuff. Doesn't mean I stop loving their music, but since a band's discography is finite, you can always only go so far with it. Examples of this are bands like Opeth, Deftones, Mastodon, Gojira, Megadeth. I'm currently very happily "stuck" on Meshuggah, but I'm sure I'll eventually phase them out in order to consume another band's work in its entirety. Some cases though, fit precisely into what this video is referring to. Slipknot is one such example, back when Vol. 3 came out, I listened to it many times, but it just didn't have the punch that those first two had, and it's not because Vol. 3 had Slipknot's first mellow songs, but the whole vibe of the album. I can still enjoy it, but that was definitely the point where I got off of that train.

Jomsviking was a big step down, so was Berserker and I didn't even bother with Great heathen army. First 6-7 albums are still great though and I return to them here and there, and Surtur/Deceiver have a little bit of leeway for me because I learned the songs on guitar as a young lad. I remember the day when the video for either First kill or Raise your horns came out and I was like: "Oh oh..." Another band is Kamelot. Once I realized that they were essentially a trend-hopping band, I jumped off of them pretty quickly--so much so that by the time the whole disgusting truth about their lead singer came out, I had already moved on and my first reaction was (and I vividly still remember saying these exact words): "Thank gosh I'm not a fan of them anymore." 1. NIN is a huge one for me. I was obsessed with NIN and Burn is what launched me into them full force. When With Teeth came out, I was disappointed and could never get into it no matter how many times I revisited. Every subsequent release just felt more and more bland and soulless. I felt like the layered, meticulously detailed instrumentals were gone. I will say that Trent and Atticus on the latest Fever Ray release is incredible. 2. Tool is one for me too. I don't think they're bad by any means, but it seems so try-hard now with being extra cryptic and mysterious on purpose. Aenima was the peak IMO. HWAP wasn't deep or cryptic, it was just a middle finger to the "fans" who judge for being popular and making money. 3. Ministry: They've always been hit or miss with me over the years. I think peak Ministry was Filth Pig. Probably my least favorite when it came out, but easily the most consistent and sharp. Seems like every album up until then was mostly throw-away tracks with a few killer or classic ones...maybe Mind had more greatness than filler but Test, really?? I think when Houses of the Mole and Rio Grande Blood came out, they were OK but they were the beginning of this insane tempos and buzzsaw guitar approach that just get old after a while and they've been mostly meh since. Rio Grande Dub and The Last Dubber remix records are phenomenal though. Paul Barker really had a hand in their creativity and it shows. Revco as well. 4. Mudvayne: I fucking LOVED LD50 and was really looking forward to anything else from them. Unfortunately after what seemed like forever for their follow-up The End of All Things to Come was a wet blanket for me and their descent into butt rock territory. I saw they're on tour again with the face makeup. I'm hoping they have something cool brewing. They really could pull off the proggy metal thing well with songs like Internal Primates.
