Hello Matt. One suggestion I would make for your mallet templates. If you run a program first to place two dots inside the boundary of each of your mallets in your mallet template you can then screw the mallets down, you will likely need a spoil board. Once that program completes and you put the screws in and you can now run your "real" mallet program. The bonus of this is you can cut your templates exactly removing the need to cut tabs and then flushing up the tab mark with the template. I have found projects that let me screw things down because the screw holes don't ruin the look, like templates, are super helpful because the time cutting tabs really adds up.

I am 62 and got nothing but time. I started 2 years ago with a 3d printer to start making some money to probably continue living. Have no money so I can´t buy a CNC machine and so decided to build one with 3d printed parts, I already handle 3d software, I am a graphic designer who dedicated all my life to large format printing plotters but actually that business here in Colombia is almost dead after pandemic. My idea is to make led light signs with the help of the router. I am studying Vcarve and the design part is really easy for me but when it comes to bits, drills, toolpaths..... omg. Complicated! My question is: Should I? Nice video.

Like your video. Most internet comments would not agree on using double sided tape. Once you are familiar with this type of software, it's an easy transition to 3d printing or laser etching. As expensive as the machine is, it's crazy to skimp on the software.

In a couple of clips it shows a 1/4in endmills (could be smaller) routing out your catchall trays. One thing I've run into is correctly putting in bit Step-over. I know it's not a massive killer but if you buy good quality bits, general rule of thumb is 25% diameter as step-over. It's slower but your bits do last longer and make cleaner cuts.

Feeds and speeds are a learning curve that extends bit life and cut quality. Hardest for me to perfect.

BLUF: And this is just my opinion. CNCs are awesome, but harder to justify for the hobbyist who isn't selling stuff on the side. If you're selling stuff on the side it's significantly more productive and cheaper than hiring an employee. Also Matt didn't talk about it, but some of these CNC's can also work on Aluminum but this is far more advanced and not for the beginner. Start on wood, mistakes aren't as detrimental or expensive. But it does, as Matt said, it diversifies your income streams.

Hey you know what would be awesome, if you cut that spartan helmet into the mallet, then filled the “liquid bronze” epoxy. It’s basically fine bronze powder to use as a pigment but I heard there’s a learning curve. Or just cut it out then cut out inlays from African blood wood. Just some neat ideas I thought of

It really doesn't. Laser burns stuff. It's good to cut and whatnot but the edges will look burnt. Nothing wrong with laser in general - it just doesn't have the same usage as a spindle/router based CNC machine

i bought a 9014 cnc frame in early march. it arrived last week so about 8 months shipping it sat at sea for 6 months and i got a couple small rusty spots on the optical rails that i had to polish out. finished the mechanical side assembly today and it is ridiculously rigid. i went with a gecko 540 system from corvetteguy50 (Vince) I will start on the electrical install side next week and then the tuning in of the motors and vfd the week after that. biggest thing for me was the cost and amount of differences from the grbl based machine i learned on. i went with the 4 axis setup as well so i have a rotary axis and i have a project i want to try on it with a chess set.

I’m looking to get a CNC and can’t decide on the one you have or the Onefinity. I watched a video where a guy said he had to rewrite his garage because the slightest power interference would cause the machine to crash and the only way to fix it was to turn it off and back on and he said it was crashing all the time. Have you had any experiences like that?

Thank you. I’m have a lot of fun using it. Depends on the day as to the rating lol. Some days it’s a 10. Others it’s a 7. Ha. But the fault has been my improper programming 99% of the time. It’s a great addition to the shop

I use CNC machines for making furniture and guitars. I would not buy any machine lower than shapeoko 5 pro. Belt driven CNC machines with palm routers are not for professionals or production shops. If you are using them for a hobby or making signs or engraving names then fine but if you want your cnc to run all day you need linear rails on all axis and an air cooled or water cooled spindle. You also need a separate dust collector with an induction motor. Don't cheap out on the software for 3d cutting. Fusion by auto cad is free non production shops. I like aspire the best but there are many good software packages. Bits are expensive but buy the best you can afford which are made from pure carbide from companies like Amana. CNC machines range from 4k up 250 k for Italian production machines which are 10' x 5' and have multiple heads and automatic bit changes. I find vacuum suction is the best for holding work but clamps and double sided tape or tape with crazy glue can work fine for small shops.

They are fairly loud when cutting. The new Shapeoko 5 Pro with the VFD spindle is much quieter than the 4 with a router. You can hear that in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8p2ltioyNG0iqs.htmlsi=pptGICCaDiFN0gAq&t=203 But when cutting certain materials and speeds, it's still fairly noisy.

Check out my.carbide3d.com they have some excellent free training that you can use to get you up to speed quickly on using their software. You can do this before you buy anything. That wasn’t available when I first started so it took me a few weeks to learn. Check out the link in my description to the machine for current prices.

2 hours for 14 mallets in mdf seems really long. You are running about 10 minutes per mallet What bit and flute count are you using? What is your depth per pass, feed rate and chip load? You should be knocking them out in less that half that time, especially in 1/2" mdf.

With a cnc you're still "a woodworker" but you're not making "handcrafted" projects anymore. It's dishonest to use a cnc and still market the product as handcrafted. But if you don't say handcrafted on a product you use the cnc for and adjust your markup accordingly for the item I don't see a problem with it. As woodworkers there's nothing wrong with having multiple lines of business. I have my little venture broken down into custom work, more standardized manufacturing meant to bring my high quality brand to a wider range of people because a lot of the stuff out there just sucks and everyone deserves a high quality product, for this I will use batching, jigs and other stuff to standardize and make more efficient, save assemby, and ship batches of orders to furniture stores. Also a service business. I think craftsman just want to do their craft, but hourly workers will make the service and slightly more manufacturing side work for itself just generating profit for you. You grow the three lines separately so it's always paying for itself. You then focus on custom work doing what you really want to do. You of course can make a good living as a craftsman if you don't want to get that big. I just think from a business standpoint having several different ways to make money help when slow downs happen. So there is nothing wrong with offering a diverse product to the market as long as one is marketing it appropriately

Right that letter to Gibson,fender,taylor,Martin, prs and most other high end guitar custom shops everything is CNC or pin routers today lol. Same with high end furniture manufacturers. There still is much hand skill involved in the process. CNC machines allow you to make many parts faster and with more accuracy.

Gotta love a guy who got the machine for free telling you that it will pay for itself, while making a commercial. I love you Matt but the direction you have taken your channel recently with the advertisements and click-bait titles and cringe open-mouth thumbnails - disappointing.

Material won't break the bank? Try $120 for a sheet of MDF........ And hardwood is even worse. AND you'll need planars and jointers unless you want to pay for pre-planed hardwood which is thousands here. I know material isn't expensive over there, but generalizing as much as you do in the video here isn't the accurate picture at all. Just my 2 cents.

I understand that, but 90% of my audience is US based. MDF here is $30 per sheet.
