Wow! Y’all are so inspiring. We bought some land for cash last summer and are planning to build a modular cabin and begin homesteading. We started vlogging it 2 weeks ago and will be uploading our 3rd video this Friday. We already run a small business selling Goat Milk Soap but we are really wanting to grow our streams of income so that we can get my husband out of his 9-5 electrician job for good. We were planning on starting with just KZfaq and hoping it will make passive income from there 😅 where would you suggest we start? The Amazon influencer program sounds amazing! But we don’t have a following and are still getting our feet in the door of making/editing videos!

@@Thehomesteadingjourney congratulations on your cash land purchase! We were fortunate to pay cash (after a decade of frugal savings and hardwork) for our homestead fixer upper 7 years ago. Its a great way to start. KZfaq is hard, but I'd start there and I'd not give up. I treasure my early homestead/youtube videos seeing my girls growing up and fond memories and every now and them you'll get a youtube video that takes off and makes some nice income over and over again. Start with something you are passionate about...we started a dog kennel because we love dogs and so we really enjoy it...do something you love and you will stick with it. Can you expand your goat soap business? I like to track every income stream daily and set hyper specific goals like ..goat soap biz, goal $1000/ month...then i work backwards and say ok how much product do i need to sell to reach that goal...then you can get creative and think of more ways to market, expand. You also mentioned your husband is a 9-5 electrician has he considered going off on his own? If an employer has enough work for several electricians, while also taking a big chunk of revenue generated then there should be enough work for him to eventually go on his own and keep all the rebenue... Setting his own pay and hours and perhaps expanding? Instead of 9-5 maybe it becomes 9-noon at a higher rate with more time to focus on other homestead businesses like youtube, goat soap or otherwise. Also love your channel name, documenting the journey from start to finish has real value.. hope that helps...focus on something you will be passionate about, do an amazing job... under promise and over deliver and things will fall into place. @@Homesteadhow thank you for this reply! Yes! he is actually working on getting his electric license right now so he can eventually find work for himself if needed and make all the revenue. Thank you for all this advice. I love the hyper specific goals, we will start doing that with the goat soap business. One of our main goals this year is to expand our soap business even more. It has slowly grown over the past few years and I do it full time right now. We subscribed to your channel and will continue following along and being inspired by y’all! A homestead is to provide a home and provide for you and your family. That's the traditional meaning of "homestead" - more centered around surviving and self sufficiency. Not PROFIT. I would say, for a successful homestead, set yourself up for self sufficiency first, then work on making the profit. But that's just according to the way I personally would do it.

I think one of the biggest attractions to city people is the homestead life, or being around farm animals. Especially if they have kids. I'm on 20 acres, 150 fowl, 2 cows, 4 goats, and over a dozen pigs... we're also planning on building an air bnb cabin or put a nice camper up for rent so we can start making money off that as well. But I'll never stop being passionate about the real homestead stuff. I think it's just important to make money where you can.

Wishing you better health. I finally saved money for plot of land, but I'm not healthy enough to work it and not sure I want to pay in stages to have others put it all together. No guarantee I'll be able to enjoy it.

@jimwilson9371 I will pray for you as well. I've learned to enjoy the little things and appreciate adaptation. We will move in the next few years and at least get a few chickens, until then, grow bags onto of pallets make an easy to access grow space. Definitely no better time than now. Best of luck.

I hear you on the no vacation that is a big con of homesteading! Darn near impossible to get away

This is definitely something to consider and something we realize after years 😔 we are currently in the process of moving to a new state but we'd like to continue farming eventually after a yr or so of just relaxing a bit and not worrying about farm animals🧘‍♀️

This is why I won't get any large livestock. I have 7 yo twins and we homeschool. It's important I take them on adventures. My layer chickens and duck are set for a week without me. I have a neighbor that comes over and collects the eggs and keeps them. Makes sure the feeders aren't topped over and are full, and the water is working. The broilers are grown out and processed between planned trips. Everything is on irrigation and timers. I harvest my commercial crops in sync with those adventures. Balance is everything.

@@HomesteadhowWe are getting a homestead with my mother and remodeling an outbuilding into a residence for her. When we want a vacation she will tend our plants and animals. When she wants a vacation, we will tend hers. When the kids are big enough one of them can tend everything. Not doing it alone is probably the answer.

As long as you don’t complain when rent or food prices get to high your all good

Growing your own feed is the great equalizer. I'm leary of store bought anything. I'd pay triple to grow it myself, the meat and veggies are all clean from contaminates and chemicals

Yeah, it's a scary one. I truly feel your Homestead is NOT self sufficient if you are not earning some money from it!

I hear you. I've been there too. In cases like this I always see if I can delegate or offload some of the work. It's usually not possible but sometimes it is. For example I have 4 teenagers and for our more taxxing businesses, like our dog kennel, we've basically partnered with our daughter, taught her everything and now she runs it, gets a % and is learning valuable business skills, books, marketing etc..while we have more time. We've also hired virtual assistants on uPwork for other projects. But many times this just doesn't make sense and the work becomes no longer worthwhile. We have been there. Much of our business focus has changed to be more passive for just this reason. Our Airbnb for example provides almost no ongoing work other than normal maintenance. Thx

Homesteading is a lifestyle. Then you look for something to earn money to pay the bills - because even if you're growing your own food, generating your own electricity, catching and storing your own water, and sewing your own clothes from home-grown fibres, you still have bills for a whole lot of things that are just too hard to do at home.

Kerry here-- I am not joking- that would bring a tear to my eye! I am very goal oriented and hitting 100k subscribers has been written on my white board for several years now. For the air bnb, it's a part of being an air bnb member. You pay air bnb per visitor for advertising and permits. Your working under them. At least I think that's how it works

Hi Kerry here. We have an umbrella policy on our homestead, it's pretty reasonable and covers our airbnb and kennel. Plus airbnb has some safeguards in place in regards to potential property damage from guests

I had an Airbnb as well in the country and you have to have an umbrella policy to cover any and everything that could possibly happen ...due to sue happy people

All agrotourism endeavors require an insurance policy, sometimes this can get costly with handicapped access and facilities. But you'll never be sued for other people's negligence

Our airbnb is a separate unit but we had to fix it up. Many people will convert an attic or basement. Our dog kennel was fun (and less expensive) because we made it off grid. It runs on a few solar panels. We do have to transport out water but it was a fun little build, holds just 4 dogs. Good luck!

Thanks for subscribing! Lately we've been sharing our adventures reopening our small town theater which is a historic building dating back to 1859! Doing that plus homesteading!

People are paying for your time in finding good items, inspecting to make sure they're in good order, and presenting them in an accessible manner. A good quality skill book in the bottom of a dusty box at a garage sale isn't worth much because most people don't know it's there. Take it out, clean it, identify it, and put it into an online store where people can find it easily from anywhere in the world, and suddenly it becomes valuable. Theoretically the previous owner could have done all that themselves, but they didn't - because it's work.

I'd suggest talking to a lawyer, and maybe your local politicians. If you build something for the purpose of renting it out, and it's on your own property that you live on, then you are not harming other local people's ability to find accommodation. Make sure the politicians know you exist before they start making laws, and lobby them to make laws in such a way as to not stop people like yourself from bringing money into your region. If they ban air bb anyway, then your best option is to rent out your new building as longer term accommodation. It's not as lucrative and there's a lot of very justified bad opinions about landlords, but you can choose to be a good landlord.

Only a small percentage of youtubers actually become successful and make profit. It can take years to make an income

The great thing about the Internet is this would not have been possible even 15 years ago. Now ordinary people are making good money, showing their lives to other ordinary people instead of a bunch of rich schmucks, making money feeding us stupid crap like the kardashians. This is within anyone’s reach who has enough hustle. It’s what America is all about.

Marketing is thousands of times easier online. Marketing local is required if you don't want to go online. Every business needs Marketing.

You're right. Homesteading is only having chickens and milking cows. That's why I only sell my chickens eggs and my raw milk and-Oh shit I'm completely broke.

Also, never once in the history of mankind has a small family farm or homestead ever rented out an empty room or had a bed and breakfast. Absolutely insane. No one would do that. Totally stupid way to make extra money. Any real homesteader would rather not make money!

I will admit, not exactly homesteading. I will agree farming/homesteading is not a money maker, but it is about working on the ecology of a piece of land too and finding your ecological/economic niche. Also, if you don’t like animal chores/firewood side hustles/cleaning paddocks to make compost why are you out there. will agree though, these ideas would be good for a hustle for my partner while I do the actual homesteading, I honestly don’t enjoy being in front of a screen a bunch and she’s more mainstream than me.

Ha! Pet goats, not sheep! Well we are far from Amish but we do have 15 chickens, 2 gardens and this year we started aquaponics indoor..we heat our entire home and water from firewood we harvest on our property. We have a long way to go but for me being a honesteader is being able to live and sustain 100% from my property without having to leave, work rely on thr man while trying to produce and eat from our property...and we've done that for 7 years now.. never had to leave. Our goats were dumb and I admit we have a long way to go..Go..but at this point I have a paid off 20 acre property with gardens, chickens, aquaponics and the property itself is paying for everything. I hope to do more homestead things with our freedom like get hogs and get solar. Thx

I think you need to recheck that. It is $99 for the year not month. Also alot of your statement makes it seem like you watched 1/3 of the video and didn't really read what the page about his course said. Slow down a bit and actually get your data straight.

@@tyeamckee Assuming you're correct and it's 100 for a year then sure I missed that point. I also left out the chump change of buying and selling stuff as a side gig for the 400 and so at the beginning of the video. But the sign making the Amazon influencer the ad revenue from KZfaq the affiliate marketing the product reviewing and the video making are all because of the KZfaq channel so I was not at all wrong about that. And 16,000 a month does equal 192,000 a year and the median household income is $60,000 a year so pretending like 16,000 a month is little is ridiculous. That puts you in the top 10-15%. I did watch the entire video and I went and quickly looked at the page for his course after I'd already posted my original comment and then updated it with the price because I thought hey I can just click the link I don't have to vaguely talk about it I can go check.

In the video we talk about our Airbnb rental, dog kennel, video production business, Amazon Influencer program, Amazon Affiliate program and reselling and more. I reread your comment and your math is off... anyways if you have a question, shoot! Otherwise if you have better advice, make a video I'd love to watch it.
