10 Biggest Aircraft Carriers that were sunk, scuttled, or lost. About 50 aircraft carriers were lost to date. These aircraft carriers were mainly involved during the American-Japanese conflict during World War II. The Imperial Japanese Navy hold the record for most sunken ships, about 21 aircraft carriers. 16 aircraft carriers were from the United States Navy, and 8 from the Royal Navy. Let us take a look at the 10 Biggest Sunken aircraft carriers based on overall size plus carrying capacity, and we will rank them according to their

I hate to be the first pedant but USS Wasp did not fight at either Coral Sea or Midway. I will get back in my box now.

I’m glad you brought it up. “After supporting the invasion of Guadalcanal, Wasp was hit by three torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-19 on 15 September 1942. The resulting damage set off several explosions, destroyed her water-mains and knocked out the ship's power. As a result, her damage-control teams were unable to contain the ensuing fires that blazed out of control. She was abandoned and scuttled by torpedoes fired from USS Lansdowne later that evening.”

@@Thetequilashooter1 The I19 fired 6 torpedo , 3 hit WASP, I hit and damaged battleship NORTH CAROLINA and another struck and heavily damaged destroyer O'Brien, which sank while enroute back to states for repairs. Thats 5 hits out of 6 torpedo

This should only be Aircraft Carriers sunk in War, Being sunk in an A-Bomb test or making an artificial reef does not count.

@@nothernstar2576 Shinano was built and and extremely close to completed, never got to fight though because it was sunk by a US Sub on Nov 29 1944 on its way to get its air wing and finishing parts --- this was 10 days after it was officially commissioned at Yokosuka

While the IJN Shinano was 265.8 m (872 ft) long, it carried only 47 aircraft. Maybe that is why it wasn't included.

@@aidanclews2745 According to the Wikipedia entry, the Shinano had an organic air group of 47 aircraft, and could deliver up to 120 replacement aircraft for other carriers and land bases. So, only 47 operating aircraft. I, too, expect Shinano to be listed.

@@ironcladalibi there wasn't really a point for shinano in replenishing the air groups of other aircraft carriers because almost all of Japan's carriers have been sunk by that time in the war and Japan had very few land bases left and because of this there wasn't any point of using shinano as a supply ship, also don't trust Wikipedia for information because anyone can just modify the info on the website which makes it unreliable

The Zuikaku should be replaced with the IJN Taihou and the Shokaku should be replaced with the IJN Shinano. Taihou was 855 feet and the Shinano was 872 feet.

In general I like this videos, but this one has LOTS of errors. First, like others said, USS Wasp was not at Coral Sea nor Midway. At least 3 British carriers sunk during WW2 were bigger then USS Wasp, HMS Ark Royal. HMS Courageous & HMS Glorious. Who does their research?

I don't mean to be rude but IJN Shinano was THE biggest CV ever sunk. She was a Yamato-class super-battleship, converted into an aircraft carrier following the events of Midway. She set sail for 10 days, and was then sunk by the Balao-class, USS Archerfish.

Ok. Where do I start. America, Oriskany, and Saratoga were post-WW2 non-combat sinkings. Largest COMBAT aircraft carrier sinking is easily the converted Yamato class Shinano, by US sub USS Archerfish. Second is probably carrier Taiho, again sunk by a US sub at The Battle of the Philippine Sea. And I’m pretty sure HMS Ark Royal was a bigger carrier than the USS Wasp (CV-7), so she should be on this list.

What about the IJN Shinano? It was an aircraft carrier that was built using the hull of what was to be the 3rd ship of the Yamato class battleship line. It was sunk on its maiden voyage by a U.S. submarine.

The wasp was not present at coral sea or midway. In Coral sea there were the Lexington and the Yorktown. Midway had the hornet, Yorktown and the enterprise.

Taiho? Akagi? Shinano? Interesting facts about the ones included, but am not sure you can call this list definitive. HMS Ark Royal had a larger displacement than USS Wasp so should be above her on any list, certainly

USS America was sunk in a SINKEX, to test her ability to take hits. You also left out the Japanese carrier Akagi, which was bigger than the Shokaku but smaller than Saratoga.

USS America was sunk as part of a live fire exercise to see what happens when a semi-modern aircraft carrier is hit by modern weapons, something that hasn't happened in combat basically since WWII when carriers were half the size and weapons were crude by today's standards. There's pictures floating around (no pun intended) the interwebz of the ship being hit and its sinking, images from ROVs of it on the sea floor, and its exact resting location is available on consumer maps and even Wikipedia lol

USS America's "Secret Mission" was being expended (sunk) as a target ship to see just how much it would take to sink a supercarrier. Over 25 days the ship was subjected to many weapon hits and underwater explosions to gather data for construction of future Aircraft Carriers. Once the testing was done the ship was scuttled by explosive charges on 14 May 2005 (Coordinates: 33°09′09″N 71°39′07″W), around 250 mi (400 km) southeast of Cape Hatteras. The wreck lies upright in one piece 16,860 ft (5,140 m) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
