This week James and Thomas answer the much-requested question: What cheap cars are the most luxurious, and which of them project the most affluence? This strange pursuit of looking rich actually resulted in a very fun search for used luxury cars, and we think we found a good little collection. What are they? Watch to find out. Safely filmed at home and in isolation.

You asked, we answered. And okay we got a bit silly with this one, but its a silly pursuit and we had a surprising amount of fun making it. This one's just for a laugh and it is by no means an actual buying guide. Let us know what else you'd like to see us tackle and make sure to follow us on instagram @thethrottlehouse to see whats coming up and how we're managing our isolation.

@@unfairsanic5089 seriously, some of the cars on this list are guaranteed to total your car 3 times over if something fails. Bentley, Quattroporte, Range Rover, Rolls Royce, S class, 7 Series I would stick with the G Wagen, Boxster, and Lexus, they're the most reliable. I've heard the Jag is average in terms of reliability
@JuanGarcia-zq5tp
@JuanGarcia-zq5tp 4 жыл бұрын
People think the car they drives fouls others, but when BMWs, Lexus, etc sell almost as much as Toyotas and Fords they aren't really that special anymore. Also they are only fouling themselves as the badge on your car will not add any commas to your bank balance. Regarding your "don't go broke tryna look rich", so true you know how many Mercedes with broken airmatic suspension I've seen driving down the road. Even if you can afford to buy a used luxury car, the maintenance and repairs are the same whether new or used, so good luck with repairs on your used Maserati if that gearbox or engine goes boom.

This is true. A lot of people buy ridiculously unreliable cars in the name of looking cool (2002 Mercedes S430 anyone?), but the maintenance is murder. People say "fix it yourself," but oftentimes the required repair either necessitates expensive parts or is ridiculously labor intensive (early Audi S4).

Yup. Apparently the Bentley is pretty reliable, but the annual service costs more than some of the cars on the list, as does the fuel. Admittedly a realistic list would be a little dull: Lexus, Lexus, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus, Lexus, Infiniti, Lexus, some obscure JDM Toyota, Lexus, etc. Perhaps some American cars, but I'm British so I have no idea how much they cost to buy or run...Ford is basically the only US brand that sells here and, as great as the Fiesta is, it would be just a tiny bit out of place in this list...just a tiny bit.

If you’re going to suffer the downfalls of an E38, get the V12 750iL. There’s already no turning back. Or, you could get a 2006 Audi A8 4.2 for $900 with a collapsed suspension, fix it, and sell for $6000. I’ve seen it happen.

I am honestly so surprised that I saw my car in one of these videos ^.^. I have never seen anyone talk about the Lexus LS 430 before and it really made me feel happy to see them appreciate it so much. I was fortunate enough to inherit mine from 2003 with only 32k miles on it and it now only has 43k. It's an absolute gem, thanks guys for talking about it!

It’s incredible that majority of the people in my high school only care for luxury brand names rather than the quality and value of car. No matter what brand it is. All for the status symbol. In reality, most won’t care what you’re driving. So you’re better off driving something you enjoy but can still afford.

'11 and up Jaguar XJL Supercharged, pure class, 4.4 second to 60 470 hp V8, great handling and stunning in caviar/wheat. Yes, it's reliable. Bought it in Florida in'17, did nothing other than basic maintenance, zero complaints. Now I am enjoying the hell out of it in Antalya/Turkey. Yes Jags can be problematic but "only" the XJs 95-98, 01-09, 11 and up V8 models are bulletproof especially SC engines with beefed up internals. Rest of the Jags I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole.

The 986 is such a good deal for an enthusiast, especially a pre 2003 model (early models only have two catalytic converters). It's one of the last analog sports cars. No throttle by wire, no traction control. Just a fantastic chassis and fun engine in a car that you can cruise at 100mph with the top down and have a conversation (its shockingly quiet) and go carve corners with ease. It's also super easy to work on and a very simple car, all the components are easily accessible despite the mid engine layout. Change your IMS when you change the clutch and you're good.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 definitely belongs on this list. I got mine for a whopping $4,000, but when people see that I have a red, two seat, collectors plate Mercedes convertible they automatically assume I spent at least 5 times that. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I haven't had any issues with the car other than minor maintenance during my ownership either. This also applies to later generation SLKs, but those cost a bit more.

Siddhartha Parekh -- Like I said, my personal experience has been very good, but from what I've heard others haven't had as good of a time. Parts are kinda expensive and I know the convertible top is prone to issues so if you do buy one I'd suggest having an extra $1000 saved for maintenance. Get it inspected before you buy it and hopefully you'll be fine.

The Clarkson Jaaaaag's were spot on. lol Also.. as I was once told. You can 'own' a BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Jaaaaaag etc But can you AFFORD them? Parts are still the original pricing, as are the maintainence items. I totally understand what you're saying... I've looked at some of them myself. But then I looked at my wallet and had to go Japanese reliability and more importantly, affordability. ;)
