I think it's important to have accurate information if you are getting into crossbow hunting and this video hopes to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about crossbow hunting.
In this video I reference a few articles:
The article about the poachers from Maine who killed deer illegally in my home county in PA: bit.ly/2tIQtQP
The New York Crossbow Coalition! www.nycrossbowc...
The articles from the New York Bowhunters about crossbows: www.newyorkbowh...
This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
I want to help make KZfaq the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

You should mention that there our people that are physically handicapped and they can not use compound bows . My younger brother was involved in a accident and has no use of one arm , but with his crossbow he can use the crank and load it himself and still enjoy hunting and most of all being independent in the things he loves ! Great episode .

Precisely what I was thinking. I’ve been a hunter for most of my adult life, with rifles and recently muzzleloaders. Now that I’m looking at retirement, I thought about getting out in the woods earlier during archery season. I have osteoarthritis in my left hand which would make using a compound bow quite painful, not impossible but uncomfortable. Using a cocking device, I can do this easily and painlessly. I haven’t decided which one to buy yet, but I’m looking at the Excalibur 340.

Good segment. I got into crossbow hunting because I'm getting older. Let's me enjoy the bow season. Which is out of this world to me. I could do the compound, but if you're sitting in a tree for 3 hours in the cold, I'm not who I used to be. And I've accepted that. So thanks to the crossbow! I still keep to enjoy the best season!😊

I really like your channel. I have been a bow hunter almost all of my life and now I’m at the point where I just cannot physically hunt that way and haven’t for a few years now. The crossbow is the only way I can still enjoy archery hunting knowing I’m not going to make a bad shot. People need to understand that most of the people that use a crossbow do so because it’s about ethical humane kills. And the ability to continue enjoying a sport they grew up with.

My crossbow is pretty much perfect for up to 30 yard shots. It doesn't shoot accurately around 40 yards, it will be off by 4 or so inches. That's why I hate when people say it's pretty much a gun.

+gavinsmitty23 that is consistent with my experience too. I think errors and problems are magnified with greater distances and less noticeable at shorter distances. All the more reason to enjoy up close and personal contact with your animals and keep those shots close. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

same as with a rifle, or a compound bow, or a blowgun (sorry had to repeat that, the parallels are exact) with a rifle, an inch off at 100 is 2" off at 200 in an moa rifle same with anything else, error at a given distance will increase linearly, all other factors being equal with a doubling of distance. With Archery gear, much more so than with a bullet, due to the increased area of the projectile, and the lack of velocity, the weight of the projectile, and the weight loading of the projectile, wind, is like Brylcream, a little dab'll do ya. In the Navy, applied physics was my thing. The science of ballistics, has so incredibly many variables it would drive Einstein to drink. Shooting and hunting are not for dummies, or the faint of heart. Fortunately, Luck, is a property that increases geometrically by the application of study, and practice.

My Barnett Recruit will shoot accurately out to the maximum range of the scope reticle (50 yards), but the flight time of the arrow makes shots past 40 yards chancy. Even a very large target like a moose can take a step during shots over 30 yards and completely mess up a perfectly aimed shot. Sure, I can hit a baseball at 50 yards...if it doesn't move. A big if.

Just bought my first XB an Excalibur Mag 340 and i appreciate and love your channel and videos. I moved from compounds in the early 90s and now at 53 wanted to get back into archery hunting. I find no shame despite some ribbing by others that think its so easy and unfair to hunt with one. They forget woodsmanship and and basic knowledge of getting within close range under 30 yards or less undetected. Technology changes but those hunting skills are a must, non negotiable and unchanging. 😊 Thank you for being an advocate and teacher here as Iam learning the ways of the xb force too😂 rock on DBB!!!

Thanks for your videos. I really appreciate them. I was born in 1966 so I’m 52 y/o. I just started hunting at 50 and did well my first season in Ohio gun, but got skunked last year. I am planning to get a crossbow this year so I can hunt from September to February. As a hunter with little skill, it’s very hard to fill your bag limit or even get one deer if you’re limited to one week during gun season, even on your own property. Which is the only place I hunt. So, I will make no apology if I tag out this year with a crossbow. Thank you again for your informative videos. Keep them coming.

Recently we went to a range that had 36+ targets set up at different ranges. At the end of the day he out scored me using peep sights n me using scope. Longer shots he was simply more proficient and this video summed it. Had I watched this video first wouldn’t talked as much crap w my son LOL. Thank you Rich for these educational videos!

Awesome breakdown, Rich. As someone who's an AZ native and lived through through all of the nonsense, it hits particularly hard. I got my first mule deer (buck) at age 14 with an old borrowed compound along with an a deer tag that i got at KMart (KMArt, not Walmart). This was all circa 1992, and the AZ laws are trash, so when I see these madmen hurling it out at 100yds, oh man, I salute those boys, but AZ could do better. Those were shots I would never have taken. AZ looks at a crossbow the same way they look at a 30.06, it's absurd. It's sad. -YIOH

I just began crossbow hunting this year. I decided I wanted a longer hunting season than just rifle and bow/crossbow hunting allows that here in eastern Kansas. I hunt on my own land and no where is there a shot farther than about 30 yards in any of the clearings I have cut and maintain. I did a bit of research and decided I liked the idea of a crossbow because I am in my late 50s and time has a way of changing ones habits and practices. I have not yet gotten a deer but I just wanted to say I have gotten an immense amount of info on your KZfaq channel that makes me glad I made this choice. Keep up the good work. Good job debunking all these myths. #4 really made me smile. Last year was my first crossbow season in Virginia. I wanted to start hunting during archery season because there is less pressure and I still see deer in my pasture munching clover throughout October. During the season I saw several good size deer, but non closer than 50 yards, so no shots/harvests. Yeah, there might be more people taking advantage of archery season now, but you still have to be up close to be successful and the odds aren't nearly as good for taking the shot as they are in the firearm season.

Interesting in the "Crossbow use scope" chapter. I'm 50 years old and never was attracted to hunting until a friend of mine started putting some serious pressure on me to try it. I finally said, fine...but I don't like guns and I don't want to get a gun license and I don't want them in my house. Compound bows seemed too complicated. So a crossbow was the best fit for me to get into hunting. Best of both worlds to be honest. The elegance of archery with the precision of a rifle. Crossbows got me into hunting. I ended up winning a raffle last week at a locally owned hunting store, and the Excalibur Wolverine is an exceptional hunting tool for sure.

My very first deer hunting season was not until I retired and I really had the time. I wanted to hunt all season but after having both shoulders worked on I could not draw a compound bow. My first hunt was with my new crossbow and I took a very nice doe for the freezer. I mostly hunt does for meat and I have now taken many deer in the last 10 years. I have lost only one of all my deer, it soon started to rain and lost the blood trail. I take sure and close shots, the same as I do with rifle and handguns. And NY, we can hunt with a suppressed gun as well. I love Ohio! Keep up the great videos, we are never too old to learn something from some one else.

Anytime buddy. I just hate when people do stuff like that, it takes just as much time and skill to hunt with these. Let me tell you I have done more studying and more shooting with a crossbow than my gun because of the fact that there is so much more involved you know this. Like arrow weight, what type of broadhead is best for your crossbow just the Minor example of a broad line of things you have to do.

+joe coyle yeah you don't just stop at Walmart and pick up some supplies and call it good, that's for sure. There is an endless amount of tinkering if you want to make it that way. I've been hunting with archery equipment since 1961 when I was fourteen. Started with a long bow, then a recurve for a few years until Jennings brought out his compound. Hunted with that for a few years until I bought a Martin Jaguar overdraw. Hunted with that for around twenty years until I had a bowhunting accident. I fell down a steep ridge and dislocated my left shoulder. as years passed, the injury eventually warranted a shoulder replacement. The doctor said that after that, I could no longer pull a bow. I live in Arizona and the fish and game dept here will issue a permanent crossbow license if you have a doctors verification. So, with that said, I can now enjoy "Archery" again with using a crossbow. And yes, I DO consider a crossbow as archery. I've built my own arrows for decades and now will continue to do so for my crossbow. Not that it matters but, I have a Barnett Comando recurve crossbow. Thanks for your videos. I just bought the new Vortex scope, good out to 100 yards. I would never shoot an animal at that range but I would target shoot it. It’s supposed to be zeroed at 40 yards but has lines at 20 and 30. I want to see what my new crossbow will do between the muzzle and 40. The manufacturer says that 6 yards is about equal to 40 yards for initial sighting in but you double check at 40 and fine tune at 60-80 yards. The final distance is adjusted by adjusting the speed ring on the scope to match the speed of your arrow on firing. I’m Mobility Impaired so I can use my crossbow in any hunt except bow only. That’s regular bow only. NM is a lottery draw for all big game hunts. But I can crossbow even during rifle and muzzle loader seasons. Plus, I ride a wheelchair for distance but I can walk short distances. This means ground blinds. Feral hogs are not big game but nuisance animals so they’re fair game. But New Mexico is desert country and I live just north of a section that the Spaniards called El Jornada Del Muerte, the journey of death. They let hogs loose everywhere they went but desert is hard on pigs except in river valleys where they were quickly hunted down by settlers, either for food or brood stock. But they’re a problem in the SE corner of the state.

As we’ve all heard, the naysayers said that crossbows would cause a disproportionate harvest of the deer, it hasn’t. “”Crossbows will kill off all the bucks and have an unfair advantage.” Hasn’t happened. “Crossbows will increase poaching” nope. Not one of their concerns have been validated. Some say crossbows should not be part of the archery season. Crossbow kill numbers have remained in line with other archery equipment.

I agree that Crossbow should eventually be legal throughout archery season in NYS, from Oct 1st - reg season in mid November (instead of early to mid Nov, 2 weeks). I think the biggest challenge to that however is that there is no requirement for Crossbow hunters to take the NYS DEC Bowhunting certification course. Bow hunters will likely resent that and I doubt the DEC will renege and change their stance on requiring the Bowhunting course for Crossbow hunting. I was surprised that NY didn't require the Bowhunting safety course for Crossbow...sure, the mechanics are different for Crossbow but hunting style/strategy is pretty much the same as archery - shots are within 50 yds or less, similar techniques apply. To legally hunt Crossbow in NYS, you need the general hunter's safety course, muzzleloading privs on your hunting license (if you want to hunt during archery and late muzzleloading season, outside the reg season hunting sched), and you have to sign a certificate that can be printed online from the DEC's website.

Myth 1 is actually a fact. Crossbows do shoot faster, farther, flatter and are inherently more precise than compound bows when each type of bow is optimized to the greatest extent possible. Just look at flight archery distance records of compound bows vs crossbows if you don't believe me. Regarding precision, the difference in arrow length is a red herring, as bullets fired from rifles are much shorter still and yet achieve far superior precision to any archery equipment. Anecdotal evidence of the form "With my crossbow I'm confident in my accuracy out to X yards, while a compound archer shooting in completely different conditions is confident with his bow out to Y yards" does not mean "Compound bows are more accurate than crossbows". It just means each archer's shooting situation is different, and their respective equipment and skills are best tailored to the distances that they reasonably expect to shoot.

Switched over to crossbow from compound do to the reasons you mentioned prior. Love your family friendly honest information. Actually feel although we are human bow shots and bow hunting comes down to a whole level of tactics and excitement beyond my rifle or even black powder. Other than follow up to dispatch ethically a 2nd shot should not be necessary. Stay within your limits (shot range).Other than movement in your stand blind practice is the only issue i have found. Example fly fishing over spin cast as one requires more finesse in my opinion. Have watched many deer at 50 yrds and passed on 15 if the shot wasn't right. So much more to bow hunting than choice of bow. Keep posting and I'll keep watching. Thanks for sharing your story and passion 😎

Thanks for the great video and yes, I just subscribed to your channel. First off, I believe that crossbows open up a world of archery hunting to folks who have a disability, have time constrains to learn compound bow, or just want something easier to shoot. I also like the fact that I can go on to WMA public lands during primitive hunting season and I don't have to worry about getting shot by some trigger happy hunter. It is my first year hunting with a crossbow and I want to recommend an entry level crossbow for newbees. I bought the Crosman CenterPoint Sniper 370 crossbow. $250 new. KZfaq it! Yes, the same company that makes the Crossman pellet gun we all owned during our childhoods. This bow is powerful and accurate. I shoot 3" groups at 40 yards. The 370 comes with everything you need to hunt, except a cheap pack of fixed broadheads, to bring down that 8 point buck. Happy hunting & obey all state hunting laws. Thks Rich!

Love your videos! Subscribed and all. I have never hunted in my life with anything. Always wanted too but life had other plans lol I am mid 30s now and just passed my hunters safety course and waiting for my field day (NJ) Tomorrow is the day I get my very first crossbow! I wanted to start with a crossbow for a few reasons. The main reason is I have Levoscoliosis, and the twisting in my back (done by the pulling of a compound bow string) really hurts me. The cocking of a crossbow is simple as I just have to stand up. The second reason is I love having a scope option. And tbh, the Third reason is your videos. So thank you for making all of these and putting all your time into giving first time hunters the knowledge we are looking for.

Thank you for the video. In my area of southern Ontario we can only use archery equipment with a 3 month season. I have only recently purchased a crossbow as most in this area are "purest". I felt like the odd man out using a crossbow. With videos like the ones you provide ( I have been watching them for about 7 months ) I feel the I have the right tool for me. Thank you again for the information the you provide. I do have a request for a video, if you would consider. I know you prefer what the manufacture recommends but if you could provide a video with good after market suppliers ( Canadian suppliers would be great ). I recently was given a Barnett Ranger. The manufacture has discontinued all items with it and could not provide a good alternative other than E bay. This model is 20+ years old and I would love to refinish it. Awesome episode and thank you so much! (And yes, I'm also a big Tim Wells fan) I'm more than happy to keep my expectations a little more realistic for a crossbow. I'm fine with shorter range as long as 1: we can still use it in our blind. We can move the food easily. 😅 I am not freezing my keester off in a tree stand when the giant Saskatchewan bucks are moving at -20c 2: its strong enough to hole punch its target. Its not going to flat out replace a rifle but at least its an option for those of us who physically can use a compound bow. Hunters not retrieving their kills?... Then get good at your aim and tracking scrub!.... (Sorry, savage moment) 🤣 I've dealt with people who complained about not getting their deer and admitting they hate tracking... 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Cecil Torres what are you talking about? You must be the Robinhood of crossbow hunter’s. There is no way you can be affective shooting deer at 80 yards unless you’re crazy nice on the crossbow. I would like to know what crossbow you’re using that makes you that confident shooting 80 yards. The bolts are shorter than a long bow and a compound bow therefore not as accurate in long distances. At long distances the slightest wind could cause you to miss 1ft to 10feet. There’s just no way I would ever take an 80 yard shot.

Well, if you ever get tired of being an attorney you probably have a future as a radio broadcaster..you definitely have the voice for it. I have been hunting with and shooting firearms, air rifles and bows (traditional and compound) for many years but just recently have come into possession of a second hand cross bow from a friend..a Horton Legend. So, now a bit of a learning curve. Not sure what kind of scope to put on it (I hear you can actually use an air rifle scope, dunno ) or what attachment I need to put on the back of my pick up truck in order to cock the darn thing. Female arms and hands seem pretty inadequate upper body strength wise for the task lol.

I have a compound crossbow with a 4X32 compact scope. 50 yards is exactly where my scope's center hairs are sighted in for. I shoot no larger than 2 inch groups at 50 yards. I have shot groups at 85 yard but the grouping increases to about 8 inches. I don't know if that's any different than a regular recurve crossbow. Mine is rated at 400 fps though. I also don't go hunting with the crossbow, just target shooting. I think I could comfortably make a kill shot at 50 yards with my crossbow. I live in NY and if you check out the dec.ny.gov site you'll see that crossbows actually have the longest hunting seasons as they were allowed from October 11th all the way through till December 3rd in the 2017 deer season. They're allowed during the last week and half of the early bow hunting season, crossbow season, regular season, and they're even allowed during the muzzle loader season. No other weapon in NYS has a longer deer hunting season. At least that's what I was able to find.

+1984sFinest that's interesting, but you can't use compound bows during all those seasons? here we can, but I know states like Illinois don't allow archery during rifle season, etc. I thought NY did. In pa we can use archery in any deer season.
@Pendragon501
@Pendragon501 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't mention being able to use compound bows during any other season. Here's the PDF of the Hunting Season Summery right from the DEC site. www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/huntseasons17.pdf It doesn't say anything about using being able to use a recurve or compound bow during any other season other than Bow Season. I don't understand their thinking in allowing crossbows during all those other seasons but regular bows... It's NY, nothing is never going to make sense here.

Nice video. The draw weight concerns that some folks have are simply their misunderstanding of basic physics. A compound bow may have a 60# draw weight with a 30 inch draw length vs the crossbow having a 175# draw weight but only a 15 inch draw or stroke length. Both bows are capable of generating nearly identical fps and ft/lbs of kinetic energy if the shooter takes full advantage of their set-up options.

There are more myths ,too. In my state you can hunt with a crossbow during archery season if you are over 60. You can also choose a crossbow as your choice of firearms during firearms season, but can't have both licenses. It's plain to see they need more archers making those decisions. As a long bow archer, I would guess that long bow hunters injure more animals because they are the hardest to consistently hit their target and require a lot more practice than compound bows or crossbows. It is the compound bow that has excessive range in archery.
@robertsophiea05

1. You don't have to draw back with a deer in range. (that movement or lack of movement is a big deal.) 2. They are a lower skill device. While the physics of arrow flight is one thing in practical application a pro-shop can sight your crossbow in for you, and you can shoot at 100 yards. That would take years of practice and absolute mastery with a vertical bow. 3. Statistically they are not bringing in new hunters, they are bringing gun hunters into bow season. 4. Why not just use it in gun season? ( answer the crossbow hunters are already hunting with guns in gun season.)

I used to hunt AZ, a 30 yard bow shot out there is really close. 40 or 50 yards was the norm for turkeys, deer, and squirrels out there, and that was if you got close (elk were a different story, they routinely got within 10 yards and messed up my hunts). The only time I shot anything up close was rabbit and dove hunting. I would never have made any of those shots with a crossbow.

Rich, you are still my crossbow guru! I have the freezer full now thanks to my Barnett recruit, am trophy hunting now, and hunting for donations to hunter's helping the hungry, am finishing out the season with my old Mathews MQ-32 compound, just because I love it too You don't have to hunt with one or the other, as you said, both are archery, and each has it's merits, having burned 1/2 my tags with the crossbow, I'll finish my season with the compound just because, I love em both, and both have their advantages. The compound, is lighter, easier to move around with, the crossbow is a little easier to shoot, and a bit easier to set up , due to the lesser movement required to set up the shot with, the crossbow is noisier, increasing the chance of a deer jumping the string, the compound is more likely to give away your position due to the extra movement of the draw, It's all archery. I have killed many more deer with the compound due to having hunted with it for many more years and my initial disdain for the crossbows disadvantages. Having eaten more crow, than venison in my rookie season with the crossbow, I'm now on an even playing field with my ego, and am having the best season of my life . 3 deer down with 3 shots from the Recruit, she can now take a time out. When I first started bowhunting I used a crossbow and loved it but I wanted to be like my Dad and use a vertical bow. Doctors said I would never be able to because of my muscle disease but I ended up using a vertical bow for several years killing deer with bows ranging from 30 pounds all the way up to 60 pounds. In 2014, I ended having some increased muscle difficulty and went back to a crossbow. I lost some hunting buddies in the process because they considered me a "poacher" and lazy because I refused to stop bowhunting. Crossbows are a great recruitment and retention tool.

Crossbows and Bow hunting is so medieval, much harder than using a rifle. Hunting with a crossbow also gives the animal a chance to escape, but on the other hand if u hit and it wasn't a kill hit, the poor animal would suffer. I heard in Hawaii that there are hunters who hunt with a knife. Hunting with a knife only would be interesting, kinda like Tarzan.

The studies I've seen indicate the wounding/loss rate of deer hunters is slightly greater with vertical bows. In short, crossbow hunters do not kill more deer but they do the harvesting more humanely. And in the end, they lead to better wildlife management because of the lessor error associated with unreported kills of animals not retrieved and documented as kills/harvests. Crossbows are particularly more efficient/effective in very cold late fall and winter hunting. It literally took me years to develop the layering and clothing system I could use without interfering with accurate arrow placement. I doubt many people are as careful as I was. Crossbows are inherently more efficient in late season hunts. Less wounding and a more humane kill.

+Raven Feather good points, thanks for watching! I agree, once you understand archery vs rifle concepts, you can be effective and humane with a crossbow for sure!

I like your vids but do have to disagree somewhat. I have been archery hunting for over 50 years now. Also shot pro and worked in pro shop for years. Due to a injury from military, I had to stop shooting compounds and get a xbow. Hard day for a very dedicated archer. My current xbow shoots an average of 360 FPS and I have less than $450 invested, including the upgrade nikon xbow scope, additonal silencer and better string. It's a crosman centerpoint Sniper 370. Out to 65 yards I do not dare shoot at the same dot without risking robin hooding my easton bloodline arrows. I have taken down coyotes at 75 yards plus. As most bow hunting setups my shots in wooded areas are less than 35 yards or so. Xbows have several major advantages, you do not have to draw, then hold and hope the deer did not see you moving. They take much less practice and are generally more accurate out to longer ranges if setup properly !!! Also you can use shooting sticks or a caldwell pod etc.. cannot do that with a compound bow. No hunting compound bow is shooting at 360 FPS and at that speed with a hunting arrow the Kinetic energy (knock down or penetrations power) is superior to a compound bow. Only disadvantage is my xbows are a lot heavier than any compound bows I own. I totally agree with your statement about them being yet another type of archery equipment. Regardless we are all hunters and I think xbows are a great way to get disabled, youth, women or new hunters into the great sport of archery hunting. Keep making the vids brother..... DJ

1 year later, we now have a hunting compound bow that shoots up to 370 fps! Pretty crazy how tech moves so fast P.s. you can use shooting sticks with a vertical bow by resting the stabilizer on 'em... I've done that on a 140 yard (target) shot, totally cheating but it was kind of fun

Absolutely agree with you. I was a Marine rifle expert and marksmanship instructor. As a deputy sheriff I shot as a distinguished expert my whole career. With a compound, I usually am pretty good at the range. Most folks think are impressed with my accuracy. So I am pretty decent at sight alignment and sight picture and smoothly squeezing a trigger or smooth release. I was at an archery range in Denton, Texas. I was shooting my compound on the indoor range at 30 yards. The guy next to me, I was using a Ravin crossbow. We started talking and he asked me if I wanted to try his crossbow. I never held a crossbow before in my 61 years of life. My shots were dead center on every 2" dot at 30 yards. It was effortless to put it in the X-ring with nearly every shot at 30 yards. I am buying a crossbow simply because it will be easier for me to. kill deer if they come within range. And my bet is a crossbow is more accurate out to 50+ yards and depending on the bolt weight, broadhead and fletching design, a crossbow bolt is more lethal. Today we have most crossbows going out at over 400+FPS and a few over 500FPS. Mu compound is an Elite Impulse 34 at 29"draw and set at 55# of draw weight. With a 425 arrow set up, I am probably in the 270 FPS range(if that). With a new 400FPS crossbow, it would probably fling that same weight of bolt out at 350+FPS. And there is no doubt, out to 30, 40 yards, the accuracy of a crossbow is superior. Also, the game is not going to see you move in the draw cycle. Plus you can only hold on a target for so long with your compound before your target accuracy begins to fade as you fatigue. I would not piss away $800.00 on a crossbow set up if it would not make it easier for killing deer or turkey. I am not an equipment geek. Function over fashion for me.

@@johnbasiglone1219 Well said brother. I have worked in Archery and Gun Pro shops on/off many years. I'm also a Veteran and Thanks for your Service. I'm retired from Fed Law Enforcement with the VA Hospital, not a uniformed officer like you though ! You don't have too spend a whole lot of Money to get a decent Xbow. Unless you just got money to blow, then go for it. Not saying anything against Ravin Xbows, but $2-3,000 is imho outrageous. The Center Point CP400 actual has Ravin limbs and it retails for around $800, its a very accurate xbow. Once you buy a decent accessories you are going to have a little over $1,000 invested. My Xbow bolts are around 445 and it shoot them at an average of 368fps. O-35 yds same crosshair :) maybe a 1 inch deviation. You are correct a xbow is more accurate and lethal out too longer ranges. Good luck this Season, if I can help ya in any way let me know Brother.

@@BeetleBuns Man you got that right Brother, I have worked in Archery and Gun Pro shops on/off since the late 70's. Never would I have ever imagined a compound shooting over 350 fps. I seen the stab stick trick before, at one time that was illegal to use in most states for bow hunting. Good luck this Season.

For your second point- you do not need to spend hours practicing with a compound bow, compound bows are not hard to become proficient at. Traditional bows yes, minimum hour a day.

I think if anything people spend too little time practicing with their compound bows though

Can we be honest here? How can you say that xbows can't shoot farther, more accurately, and safely? They can. 1. If you have a 4x scope a target appears four times closer. So a 100 yard target appears like it's 25 yards away. That will undoubtedly allow you to shoot farther with more accuracy. Most compound sights don’t use magnification. Crossbows shoot 100 FPS faster allowing for flatter trajectories. That means they have more range potential and the time for the arrow to reach the target is shorter for a xbow. Unlike a compound or recurve you can mount or support a xbow, for more stability, and a much more accurate stable platform. Xbows are more powerful. That is true. Since for formula for kinetic energy considers the mass(grains) of the arrow once and the velocity of the arrow twice. The speed is twice as important the arrow weight and so the edge, for power, has to be conceded to the xbow. There’s a reason you need stronger targets for fast xbows. You can easily make a 50 yard shot with a xbow. Let’s be real. With the speeds of a xbow you can reach out to 50 yards faster than a trad bow's arrow can reach a target at 25. That means that deer has less reaction time to the shot at double the distance. That coupled with the scope’s advantages(it looks 12 yards at 50) and even possibly using a rest. There simply is no comparison and making a 50 yard shot with a xbow is very ethical. If you want to get up close and personal with a deer try a trad bow where you’re likely making a 10-15 yard shot to get the job done. There are distance gains to be had with a xbow and that means more opportunities and more meat in the freezer. That’s just the reality. The truth is just that the xbow is the current pinnacle of ethical hunting with an arrow. It’s just more accurate and powerful and gets the job done better than a traditional or compound bow. In Myth 5 you talk about how crossbows harvested more deer than compounds. This is exactly why. It’s a more effective tool to get the job done. Myth #7. Again C’mon using a scope DOES confer a distance advantage. I can shoot a rifle with a iron sights or a scope. Guess which one will get a better group score every time… the scope. I do agree though that just because a xbow can optionally use a scope that does NOT mean it’s a rifle. There is no comparison between a rifle and a xbow.
