Since I started hunting with the crossbow in 2010, I've heard certain questions come up over and over. I answer those questions here. Among those questions:
1:34 When do I cock my crossbow? Should I cock it when the deer show up or as soon as I get out of the car?
3:31 Can I leave it cocked all day? All season? How long can I leave my crossbow cocked?
4:42 Is it okay to UNcock my crossbow?
6:07 Can I cock a crossbow in a treestand?
6:55 Also, I address the question I get every year: where do I shoot a deer with a crossbow?
7:32 Can I put a rifle scope on a crossbow?
10:10 And finally, what type of target should I buy for my crossbow?
These questions (and maybe more) are answered in this video!This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
I want to help make KZfaq the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

The best target you could have for your crossbow is a diy one. I took an old heavy blanket and rolled it up nice and tight , then I rolled an old winter jacket around it and put it in a box . Arrows only go in about 5-6 inches and pull out like butter. Thank me with a like , telling you it’s the best thing ever 😉

Not all rifle scopes are for long distances. In 1983, there were no scopes decicated to crossbows. We put 1.5 x4 power 22 rifle scopes on our crossbows. Set the scope at 1.5 to 2 and everything looked just fine. Given that the prods on our bows were 100 and 150 lbs., shots were never taken at more than 25 yards, maybe 30.

Just wanted to give some possible explanation to why someone asked if they can use a rifle scope. If you attach one of those haha speed rails you can use a scope with a single cross hair eliminating the need for multiple reticles. HHA makes a single reticle scope but if you have a rifle scope you can use it eliminating the cost of buying a new scope along with the speed rail

Rifle scopes aren't recommended for xbows because they aren't designed for the forward recoil that xbows have. You run the risk of blowing the cross hairs out of you use a rifle scope.:0 Best to stick with xbow stuff if you have a xbow :)

Great video. Just to add to what you Mentioned about converting to a riflescope...most xbows now come with scopes that are specifically calibrated for that model xbows bolt weight and Xbow speed rating. The scope will more than likely have a BDC reticence for various ranges, so essentially your factory scope is mated to that xbow.

Vibration harmonics will wreak a rifle scope. They are not made to withstand that kind of movement. You could use one, but it will sound like a baby rattle after a few months. You'll get the same effect putting a rifle scope on a spring airgun.

Spring air rifle scopes have to be tough due to the odd recoil they have, its similar to the crossbow in its effect on the internals, Some of my scopes have been on springers and crossbows over the 40 odd years I have owned them all with no problems maintaing zero. Of course todays scopes can be made in a Chinese sweat shop with dubious components so be careful in your choice if you re on a budget. We aren't allowed to hunt with crossbows or longbows in the UK but I subbed anyway to you and will have to look through your backlog of videos with interest. What draw weight do you use for deer? What is the average range you shoot them over out of interest?

Ordered a new string for it, and will be getting some bolts as well (so I CAN shoot it!). Not bad for $50 in my opinion. Now finding a sight/scope for it on the less expensive side is the next trick.

Great video! I was on a budget and I went ahead an purchased a SUPER cheap Man Kung 150# crossbow for 70$. It was my first ever crossbow purchase as I have been hunting whitetails with traditional longbows and wanted too try a new weapon system in the realm of archery, just to throw in some “spice”. I’m not a fan of compounds, so I opted for a recurve. The bow, for the price, is extremely durable with a strong trigger system. I honestly think it was on sale as it looks and feels like the crossbow is worth way more. I have a few questions that hopefully you can answer as you are very knowledgable on the subject. The first one is in regards to bolt weight. Like I said, the crossbow has a 150# draw weight and has a 10 inch power stroke which from my understanding is very short. The bolts it came with were 14 inches and around 300-350 grains. I recently purchased a 22” carbon bolt that fits perfectly on the rail and into the string. The carbon weighs in around 400 grains and has a 125 grain mechanical broadhead. My question- Is it safer to shoot a heavier bolt? I know that the longer bolt is front heavy and I would have to compensate my shooting. I’ve had no issues shooting them through my crossbow. My concern is to avoid limb damage. I know from experience that heavier arrows penetrate better, but suffer in velocity. Second question- Obviously this crossbow i’m using isn’t the bees-knees of crossbows. It’s a basic crossbow marketed as “hunting crossbow” on the package. I would never push the limit with it and shoot past 20 yards. All my longbow kills have been done within 20 yards. My question- with weeks of practice to tighten my groupings out to 20 yards, and using my heavy bolts with razor sharp mechanical broad-heads, with a lung or heart shot, would it be ethical to use for deer/hog hunting? The bow is rated at 225 FPS, and with the calculations puts the crossbow at 40 pounds of kinetic energy. My primitive longbows pulling 60# and shooting 600 grain arrows have done double-lung shots, with arrows shooting anywhere from 138-160 FPS. That calculates to only about 30 pounds of kinetic energy. If I practice all summer, do you think a low-end crossbow like mine could get the job done. I can’t stand the thought of loosing deer, I need tight groupings consistently. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Awesome channel. You are my guide to crossbows! -Aaron

i think you're okay on both counts. ok to go heavier, but never lighter. You're taking risks anytime you deviate from the manufacturer's recommendations, though, if possible, ask them first! (but from what i have read, lighter arrows risk a dry fire effect but heavier does not.) Then again, if the longer ones do not fly straight, then they won't cut it. if you can speed test it on a chrono, that might help, too (you could measure your KE that way). i think it can be done. where are you at, just out of curiosity. (what state, region etc.)

Death by Bunjie I live in NorthEast Texas. Also, I just did some target practice at 10 yards with my crossbow, and I noticed a burning smell. All points lead me to the rail and string serving contact as that is where the smell is coming from. I haven’t yet purchased rail lube, which I need to do. You might hound me for this one, but i’ve been using a very thin film of clean pure liquid mineral oil on the rail. I notice when it wears off, I smell the burning scent.

Mark Tate well if you “read between the lines” he’s really trying to sell you an Excalibur! They are the best crossbow out there. You can get an AXE 340 for around $600 with no accessories. That crossbow will last you a long time and had a lifetime warranty and there’s nothing else out there that’s like an Excalibur.

I imagine the biggest reason people wan to k ow of they can put a rifle scope on a crossbow is they have one. I bought a crossbow with a red dot sight. I have astigmatism do red dots and I dont always get along, but I have a couple riflescopes laying around. It would make sense to want to know if I can swap them out. I'm not going to because I'd like to put an actual crossbow scope on it because I know scope are made to deal with certain types of recoil and because I want one with reticle for different yardages, but thats probably the most common reason for asking about rifle scopes on an xbow

I'm completely new to crossbows but I can no longer use a recurve or compound bow that well because of an injury. I have an aimpoint reddot with a single dot and was wanting to know how well it would work. Could I sight it in at 30yrds and hold under at 20yrds and over at 40yrds? Or would you recommend a dedicated crossbow scope
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer a dedicated scope with reticles lined up perfectly at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards, BUT there are lots of folks who like the hold over and under method. If it works for you...well, it CAN be done!

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a crossbow, so to KZfaq to research. I found your video very informative with great information. I think i'll just start with a good quality recurve and evolve from there. What would you recommend for a middle aged man, with money to spend? Don't really need a low budget bow, I don't mind paying for good quality. Thank you,

I can’t agree with your assessment of the scopes. I’ve found it’s the one area that crossbow manufacturers have dropped the ball on. I think that an upgrade is pretty sound. I recommend a good crossbow specific upgrade in the optics department.

What could happen, using bolts much shorter and/or lighter than reccomended? Example: shooting a 6,5" pistol crossbow bolt with a 175 lbs regular crossbow. The problem would be just a semi-dry fire due to the small bolt or there are other risks?
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 4 жыл бұрын
Semi dry fire is a big deal, and a big problem. Consistent accuracy is probably not going to happen. Also, pretty easy to forget you've got an arrow in there and stick your hand or foot in the wrong place make the stirrup for example. Really not a good idea in my opinion.

@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 4 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't be much different, put it on a rock if you have one. Or, worst case scenario, if you sit down you can put your heel on the ground, foot pointing straight up, with the stirrup over your foot and cock it horizontal to the ground if that makes any sense.

Great video, thanks.I just bought my first crossbow (a Centerpoint Sniper 370) just to have a little target fun with my nephew.I've been advised not to use bolts with flat nocks...any thoughts? And any advice on what "weight" bolts I should stick to for target practice?Is it dangerous to use too light of a bolt?Are too light of bolts even sold or is the tip weight what is being referred to? Also, the bolts I bought from advice from an experienced crossbow user on youtube say they are compatible with 80lb crossbows, but the Centerpoint Sniper 370 has a 185lb draw weight.Is the Centerpoint too powerful for these bolts or is the 80lb bolt rating referring to something else?Hopefully most of this makes sense, any help would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck!

+NolaDom only use the arrows and nocks that the manufacturer recommends. I looked up that crossbow briefly and it looks like it comes with half moon nocks. Therefore, if I were you I would only use half moon nocks. If you need more arrows, buy more of what came with it directly from the manufacturer. They know best what goes with that crossbow. I would stick with that brand and model of arrow, that weight and length, and the same weight broadheads that they recommend. I use the same arrows for target practice that I use for hunting. The only thing I change is the broad head. I use field points for the targets and then I use the Broadhead recommended by the manufacturer for hunting. Both tips are exactly the same way. There they are both 100 grain. If they were a different weight it would change the path of the arrow and affect accuracy. Yes it can be dangerous to use to light of a bolt. But it also affects your accuracy for sure. Really, in my opinion, there is no reason to ever need different sizes of arrows and the same goes for broadheads. Usually broadheads are 100 grain, 125 grain, or 150 grain. The arrows usually have a different weight, and then there is the overall weight of that Arrow when you add the Broadhead and arrow together. Yes you can buy arrows that are too light for your crossbow. If they were meant for an 80 pound crossbow then they will be way too light for a 180 pound crossbow. Yes, it could break a limb. To avoid that I recommend that you read the manual. I found it here. Read that and I hope it helps let me know if you have any other questions! www.crosman.com/sniper-370-camo . There is also a manual for the scope. But overall I would stick with what the manufacturer recommends. Good luck and keep me posted!

DbB, thanks for the quick reply and the advice, I think I have the right arrows on the way now.Now I just have to buy or get a target put together. While I've got ya, can I ask a somewhat related question?I have a Bear compound bow from when I was a kid (1982/83) that was barely used (shot maybe a couple/few dozen times) and stored inside in a/c for all those years and it looks fine (no frayed strings,etc).Do you think it's fine to use or should I absolutely not use it without getting it looked at by an experienced archer/archery or hunting shop?I don't know enough about how the cables or strings, etc. could react or change over that much time.just curious what you think. thanks again!
