I love both of them. If you already read the books it wouldn't be fun to watch the show b/c it would be surprising. Changes are important to keep the show fun

The change in jace really annoyed me. In the book he's hilariously self-centred and has great sarcasm and one-lines. It gave him a lot more depth. Who agrees?

The most illogical one: Jocelyn DOES NOT DIE IN THE BOOKS. She actually wakes up after all the drama of Jace and Clary being siblings, and immediately tells them they are not, because she remembers her son and the cruelty in him didn't exist in Jace.

I've been binge-watching the show for the past couple days and I have only three words for it: MALEC. IS. LIFE. Period.

I’m usually a “the books are better” person but the show holds such a special place in my heart. After the first season you could tell they improved on so much and I think it was a better reflection of the society we live in now especially with all the references to mental health and addiction. The books are amazing, no doubt about it, but Malec is so important to me as not only a fan but a queer fan and I think the show and their casting of Harry and Matt were perfect and their chemistry as well as the chemistry between all the couples was phenomenal. I also found the plot in the show to be focussed more on the things I loved and found enjoyable but that’s just me.

The “shadowhunters books” are called “the mortal instruments”.

Btw why they said madzie was in books? She never existed in books just like that lydia. Did we read the same books?

1. Actually Matzie is not in the books. She's an invented character like Lydia Branwell. 2. Simon's not turned into a Vampire in the third episode but at the very end or episode seven. 3. In the books it is said that if a mundane drinks from the Mortal Cup they can become a Shadowhunter but the process is dangerous, because many mundanes will die before one is turned into a Shadowhunter. And that's the same in the show. The real difference is that in the show if you have the Mortal Cup you can control demons. 4. Even in the show Jocelyn went to Magnus Bane in order to have Clary's memories of the Shadow world cancelled. 5. In the show Ragnor Fell's skin is not green because in the cooks we don't see him at all. Ragnor only appears in the first episode of Magnus Bane Chronicles and the show runners don't have any rights over those books so they cannot mention or describe any of their characters. They just could do it with Ragnor because he was mentioned in the Mortal Instruments but they had no permission to describe him the way he really looked like.

As someone who read the books first, I wasn’t that disappointed at the appearances of the actors. Yes I was wary of the acting in the first season but it got better as the season went on and I love the show so much

Scenes that were better in the movie than in the show: -The greenhouse scene -Jace finding Clary’s drawings -Isabelle and Clary talking about Jace like. “So are you two dating?” -The scene where Clary wears a short black dress and Jace pulls a pin out of her hair.

Wtf Jace never "decided" to "team up" with Valentine. In the books he thinks he is evil, and his upbringing made him that way, but he always stood up against Valentine. In the show, he only went with him to protect his friends. He "sacrificed" himself for the sake of the others so they could save the world.

Weird that she didn't mention the physical differences between book malec and tv malec. In the book, Magnus is a lot taller than Alec. And Alec has blue eyes instead of brown. (But I thank the casting directors decided not to stick with the book Malec otherwise we wouldn't have Harry Shum Jr and Matt Daddario in our lives) Which means, the MOVIE malec (Godfrey Gao and Kevin Zegers) was actually more accurate. But the movie sucked so it doesn't really matter anyway..

The show is good, but Kats acting is a little cringe (don’t kill me), I liked Lily as Clary & the movie more. 🤷🏼‍♀️

How dare you call Luke meek! Did you know Valentine set him up to become a werewolf after Luke defied him? In the side novel the Bane Chronicles, Magnus encounters the Circle a short while before Luke was turned. They were trying to hunt down werewolves after Valentine convinced them those were the ones who killed his father. As Luke discovered Valentine was secretly torturing a werewolf child when he entered the room Valentine was in, he rescued the child, scolding Valentine for it and taking it to the mother, letting them free. Magnus thought he misjudged Luke, and that he was probably the only one in the Circle with a heart, but that he wouldn't survive it. As that was when Valentine decided Luke should be taken care off. Luke also fought several times to protect Clary with his pack, and had no problems with shooting Sebastian/Jonathan with a gun, even though he was going to be his stepfather. Luke was a kind man, but he was not meek.

You got things wrong. First of all, even in the show, Katerina was blue, she used a glamor to cover it up, though. Next, the series never said that if a human drank from the cup they would definitely become a shadowhunter. A lot of the time they will die, not all transform. That's WHY it's illegal to use it. The show didn't get that wrong.

The funny thing is that EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT AND THE BOOKS RULE ALL.

I think the books are best, the movie is good and underrated, and the show made too many changes for me to enjoy it.

The show said a mundane would die if they drink from the cup and isn’t strong enough for the transition but if they are strong enough they become Shadowhunters

I missed the fact that they skipped WHOLE Alicante with the frickin' Demontowers in City of Glass. That was just awesome and so sad that they've cut it out. Also, though it is a minor change, Sebastian's hair was supposed to be black, Jonathan's was blonde. Hairdye was probably too much work/costly 😅

The show itself is a good stand alone show and a pretty good adaptation. It gets the important parts from the books in there, but since it is an adaptation, in my personal opinion, I feel that its ok that the director changed some things. Some tv/movies change so much *cough* Percy Jackson *cough* because they're lazy and/or didn't understand the source material, but you can tell that the director is trying to keep the characters similar to their roots. Also that thing with the mortal cup, They totally say that it can change mundanes into shadowhunters. There's even a scene where they do it. ...Also Malec is amazing btw

I was damn annoyed by how she pronounced the word "stele" it is not "steel" its pronounced "steley" okay?! Urg it was so infuriating...and one more thing Catarina is blue, but because she has a job as a nurse she had to hide her warlock's mark, her blue form almost showed on season 3 when they had a party at Lorenzo Ray and Lilith started messing with the laylines

The Mortal Cup kills even in the books bc mundanes rarely survive the transformation. Same is explained in the show AND even showed how Valentine uses it to create new shadowhunters. Not sure the case with Ragnor, but even in the books Catarina has to glamour herself due her mundanes work. In s3e2 it is shown that she in fact is blue once the glamour is gone.

There's more Malec at least so there's that. Oh and we've seen Catarina's blue skin in the show, they just wear glamours. Next time I suggest you catch up to all of season 3A before making comments like those.

I read the books and i'm happy with the changes they've made in the show. Keeps things fresh and interesting. :) Also, I always felt the ages in the book were a little ridiculous... having them a bit older makes more sense.

I feel that Jace's show personality is so different to the Jace's book personality... the Jace of books is so Smart, cute, funny and has a very high ego; but thr Jace of the show is just boring

Let the books be the books and the tv show be the tv show. Adaption for tv needs a whole lot more in order to capture audiences and keep them interested. I loved the books and now I love the show. It’s great to see how they expand the stories and we get more new content rgd the characters we love so much. What’s so bad abt that?

I really like, how they made things different. At first I watched the tv show and love it! After I finished season 3 , I bought the books and love them too. It's cool to see, how the same things happened in completely different ways. They didn't copy the books like the movie does, they make their own story with the same end. That's cool.

I actually like Clary and Isabelle's relationship in the books. At first, it was rocky, but because both of them were jealous of each other. Once they got all that straightened out, they became like sisters.

They have never gotten Jace right! I’ve never had a problem with the other characters but they ALWAYS manage to mess up Jace:(

You said Stele wrong and have you not watched the whole of season 2 because we find out what the repercussions were with Jace working with Valentine also in the books Caterina hides her blue skin because she works in a mundane hospital and In episode 2 of season 3 we see her with blue skin and white hair :)

WHAT!? ive read the books, and ive only saw moments from the show... RAGNOR isnt green in the show? WHY? WHY? WHY? ... he should be green... magnus always teases ragnor (on the "Bane Chronicles") about how he just camouflaged with the forest and that the monkeys attacking them rarely attacks ragnor... it was a great humor! he should be green!

I felt that the movie was a bit more accurate than the Tv show and I liked it better. It's too bad they didn't make any more movies :( I was also hoping to watch that period of time in the books when Jace was working with Sesbastian but I don't think it's going to happen.

I love the books and hate the show. I usually don’t care about people saying the show is better than books (which is a total lie) but nothing pisses me off more than when someone says the Shadowhunter books or Shadowhunter Chronicles. Like no, its the Mortal Instruments. But at the same time it’s good because my lovely books are separated from the horrible show.

I just can't get over the fact of Jace and Maia having sex... And the Seelie queen putting on the mark of cain to Simon... it was supposed to be Clary And... I'm not so happy with how are they developing the season 3.

I think the tv show is literally perfect! If they wouldn’t have changed a few things then it wouldn’t be fun to watch it. The suspense is very important! It would be boring if you always knew what was going to happen next. So I think the producers did an awesome job!!

Ok not to be that person but, I love the books they are one of my all time favorite book series, however I can't stand the TV show. Not just because they changed everything except the premise, but because I just don't find it to be a good show, I think that if I saw the TV show without having read the books I would not like it because I just can't find it to be a good show in general.

Let’s not forget when they had clary loose her memories of the shadow world at the end of the series which doesn’t make any sense as it was actually Simon what lost memory of the shadowworld in the last book. Which really did not sit well with cuz it definitely throws off the storyline from the books entirely. In my opinion

I'm reading the books right now and I watched the show first. The show's plot is a little weird, but they made certain characters more likable. Also Malec was really the best part of the show

From the experience of literature teacher, I can say - you should separate books and things that happening on screen, because the laws of writing and shooting ( playing on scene) are rather different. So, there are "different creations" of different creations))

By itself the TV series is great. But if you come from it expecting it to be like the books, you'll be disappointed. Alot of things change

I've never watched the show for a few reasons. I only recently read the books, so when I looked up the show, I looked for clips at first. The first one I came across was Alec's wedding to Lydia - which made me super confused - and they were getting married in white. It's the color of mourning, not marriage. The other thing was the ages of the characters. I never watched the show because I figured that there would probably be a lot of changes and I wasn't sure I'd be happy with them. Seeing as how I blew up over the color of Lydia's dress at her marriage, I think it was a good call on my part to just stay away from the TV show.

i mean am I the only one who thinks making Alec get married and adding Lydia was a really good decision, cause it added depth to Malec. I wish it'd happened in the books. Also Jocelyn's death was one that I liked cause it added depth to Alec's charactar.

Joclyn wasn’t an artist in the show because after she drew a picture of Valentine as a monster, (way back before Jonathan was born) valentine found it and he swore to ruin her life. So she let go of art after clary was born so she doesn’t “mess up” again. Luke mentions this to clary while he’s recovering in bed after he gets seriously injured and Magnus heals him.(in the first season) Edit: s1 e5 to be exact

I like the show. It was what introduced me to TSC. I never would have comitted to *3 different series of books* without the show. And I'll say it: I liked the show better than the books, which I read between finishing s2 and s3 airing. I just think it's better. Let the hate rain on me

I tried watching the show in the first season. But all the deviations from the books left me steaming. I gave up on giving it a chance

They crew of Shadowhunters did say that they were putting twits in the series to keep it interesting to anyone who has read the book or watched the movie I guess. I have read all the books and so far it is quite interesting. Also I think the characters were as close to the descriptions as possible.

This felt more like a bashing video, with very sparse attempts to give the show credit. A lot of the aspects of the book were changed to fit the tv show. Luke is a cop because it gives his character something to do and a way for the other characters to find out about the latest issues occurring in New York. The book centered around Clary mostly, so Luke would always show up when it was convenient for her story. It would've been so boring to have him sit in a bookstore doing nothing. The show gave everyone way more screen time (except perhaps Simon and Clary somewhat). Other adaptations like Chairman Meow not existing may be due to the cast having cat allergies, alongside it just being very difficult to require a cat on set anytime Magnus' apartment is used in a scene. At least they make references in the alternate universe episode, which was very funny. Some events are different, but the basic plot remains the same in the series, and happens chronologically for the most part. The few changes that differ usually made sense for the scenarios, and all together the show succeeds in showcasing more than just Clary and character development. They're doing the right things to make a successful show, like using Malec as a focal point for season 1 to gain more viewership.

I hate how you say in almost difference "fans of the books were upset about this difference because..." You don't have to repeat that after every entry. There is and always will be outcry for any adaptation when it differs from source material. People are just petty like that. Also, you're so wrong about your entry of Simon's vampirism. How can you say that Simon was more involved in the books when Simon turning early on in the show was just so that he can have a storyline? In book one he doesn't do much at all before and after getting kidnapped.

I went to a book signing with Cassandra Clare when Lady Midnight was released. The episode where Michael Wayland is introduced had aired the night before and we all brought it up and she said that she hated what they were doing to it but she didn’t have any creative leeway with them. So even the author hates the show. Should speak volumes to the producers.

I originally intended to read the book series before watching the TV show, but I never got around to it before the premiere, so I started watching the show, then I read comments on here that explained how different the two actually are and now, I have gotten to the point where I enjoy the show for what it is and I think I might be better off not reading the books and having expectations of them being the same.
