I’ve known a Scottish terrier for 10 years. He was a very very peaceful dog. He was very aware. But was very very stubborn when going for walks. He never bit anyone or any dog in his whole life. He was very tolerant but up to a certain point. But he never bit even then, he just went away showing clearly his intentions. He loved me and I him. Sometimes I would feel dull or “down” if you will. Then he could feel it. And he knew that I was in a really bad state of mind and would be extra tolerant of me. Even let me pet or be with him even if he didn’t want to. And he knew it was a little uncomfortable for him sometimes but even then he would be so tolerant and never bite me. Though he was not a big fan of being picked up or cuddled like other dogs tend to do. He was an Scottish terrier with a wolf’s determination and spirit.

My grandma had a daschund and it was a terrible over-eater as she got bit older. I wondered of she was unhappy, who knows. They tried everything to slim her down. In the end she got so fat that her belly almost dragged - and had to be put down :( .Because she got so overweight that her long spine on those little short legs was in danger due to the excess weight. Very sad.

My mini schnauzer dogs are so different from one another. My girl loves to interact with people and can literally be in the middle of any get together (but is usually picked up and curled on someone’s lap). She loves car rides where she hopes to go somewhere that has new people or pups to meet. My boy could care less about anyone but his immediate family. He hates going anywhere and prefers to be home alone. With that being said, Both are good at being home alone so I’m glad to see they are on this list. Although their owners really are the ones with separation anxiety from them! 🤣

As someone who has owned two dachshunds before, what is said in this video is true and in my experience they are not as fragile as some books say they are a surprisingly sturdy breed for dispite how there built though I will advise to not let them jump on or off high furniture at lest if possible they still arnt as sturdy as a lot of other breeds but they are incredibly loyal and loving.

I agree. However, people have to earn money to take care of a pet, so that is going to take them out of the house for some amount of time. I see this comment a lot, and I often wonder if these ppl who make these comments are rich (don't have to work) or do they think money grows on trees. Also, also being at home all day with a dog can make it more likely to develop separation anxiety.

As other comments have mentioned, it's not so much the dog breed, but how you train them and get them accustomed to being alone. Of course the more independent breeds will have an easier time of learning. There are plenty of videos showing how you can do this. If you start from when you first get your puppy, it will be easier.

I'm sure you're right, but it's easier said than done! All the shelters where I live, and beyond, have a long list of restrictions, like 'must be the only pet in the house, must be experienced with the breed.....' and pedigree-dogs from breeders don't come cheap.

@doglover2742
@doglover2742 4 жыл бұрын
how mutch exercise do a rough collie need?
@sharroon7574
@sharroon7574 4 жыл бұрын
@@doglover2742 ours gets 2 short walks to do business ( condo life ) and one long walk per day which can vary from 4 to 10 km, he also needs to play games like hide and seek fetch etc because with collies their brain needs stimulation as much as their body needs exercise. His needs were greater when he was a puppy, he needed more frequent play times and walks to prevent boredom and again to do his business. My parents find that when they take care of him he settles right into their schedule as well which is less active so he can do that for a week or so. One of the reasons I picked a rough collie is that they don't need to go all day and can be quite lazy in the house.

@starofairdrie
@starofairdrie 4 жыл бұрын
Basenji? -- I've had them over 20 years and bred several litters - I love them plus they are short haired, clean themselves like cats, use their paws in the most adorable way, are generally healthy, love on you a lot, can be absolutely silly and are a nice size. Basenjis don't bark rather they make a baroo/yodel sound when they are happy and have a whole array of noises so they aren't by any means silent all the time. But to stay on point it depends on the individual if they can be left alone. We only have one of our homebreds now and she's fine alone. But they are very, very curious, as in 'hey, what's inside the sofa?' I actually heard that exact line before I left out my tribe to go to a childbirth class and Stella ripped two holes in the sofa and then the three of them pulled out some of the enemy (aka Polyfill, for some reason they all hate that stuff). They also work as a group if you have several - like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park - one will distract you while the others go steal something from the kitchen that's been left out. Like the carton of eggs. So know your dog(s) well and limit them to part of the house until you are sure. And really many aren't easy to train as no matter how attuned they are to you; they are both sight and scent hounds so other things get their attention. I would never leave one off leash because of that unless they are working (lure coursing, racing, doing agility). They love an enclosed yard so they can open up and run (they get the 'zoomies' ike greyhounds do). I had one that would track airliners en route to PHL and we are 25 miles out so the planes were probably at 17,000 ft. But all that said I wouldn't have anything else. (sorry for the treatise). You have to go to a qualified breeder and meet the mom (and dad if present) to be sure the breed is for you.

All dogs can be left alone depending on their temperament, upraising and breeding. My Barbet has had depression anxiety since she was a pup and the breeders, though with training and consistency is now able to left alone and out of a crate (2 years old). My Labrador is amazing left alone, has never crated or whines (as long as she has had an energy release). Since day one she’s been so easy to leave alone. Though her sister doesn’t like to be left alone but is getting use to it (14 weeks old). My barbet was weened earlier then should of been from mom which can create a separation anxiety. Where as my Labrador was bred from calm family pets and was weened on time.

I am surprised to see the Mini Schnauzer listed as the number 1 dog on this list. I have one that I cannot leave alone because she barks for hours, she has separation issues, and I have left her with another mini (a very independent one), and yet she barks a lot. LOL. But, in all fairness, my little one is a rescued dog. We adopted her when she was already an adult dog. So, God knows what happened to her to justify her separation anxiety.

I got a shar pei, amazing breed, just perfect character for me. Mine is super chill and really easy going, she will listen to my commands always without even raising or changing the tone of my voice, it is like she is really aware of what is going on all the times. I wish she liked to be petted more often, but she is so independent that after a while she will move a couple of steps away and sit close to me playing with a stick or something. She likes company a lot but keeping a bit of distance after a while. I respect her Just be sure to socialize her from very young age, both with humans and dogs. Do it with dogs you know are good natured, shar pei fighting instinct can appear and will be tough to change. Not only that but they have a bit of an aggressive playstyle, liking to jump on dogs necks and making strange sounds that might scare other breeds. You can also change that but it is normal for them, shar pei packs do play like this and never get inti fights but because they know

I have a king Charles cavalier, who never had an issue when left alone, she lies by the front door waiting for you to get home. Then we added a small chi chi to our family, and although they both love going for outings and car rides, when left alone, they both now snuggle together at the front door, which they never do otherwise! It's kinda funny how the little queen Chihuahua becomes so affectionate to the much larger yet inferior to her cav sister when left alone. @@mustygunt2323 Well believe it or not if you spoil the dog and keep spoiling it, you will get bad results. Some owners of small dogs like a chihuahua or Pomeranian, love spoiling their dogs and they don't get good results. Some dogs end up developing Small dog syndrome which is a condition where a dog thinks it's the pack leader. If you let your dog believe it's the pack leader and not you, it will probably rule over your household. And this happens with big dogs too. If you want a well behaved dog, you need to be firm yet gentle with training. I didn't mean that you had to boss your dog around but ensure that you're the pack leader and not the dog. And also, don't call me crazy because I have been studying dogs for as long as I can remember and you to be saying that kind of thing, shows that you don't know much about dogs either. No highly intelligent, highly active dog is going to be particularly comfortable being left alone for extended hours. Several of these breeds are bred to be pack hunters and lap dogs. These dogs can be prone to anxiety and destructive tendencies when without social stimulation, their intelligence making them naturally stubborn and with curiosity that can easily get them into trouble. Most dogs with good training and adjustment can be fine. The Basenji and the Lhasa are probably the only two on this list that I can really agree with. Great Danes are actually listed as "apartment" dogs with their more easy-going and relaxed personalities, they could easily beat out most of the dogs listed here. And the "goldador" isn't a breed. Labs and Golden's both can swing in the spectrum from sedate, gentle giants to completely neurotic. They need work and activity to be happy and stimulation or they can be destructive. Someone who isn't home enough to provide this is likely to have more issues with destructive tendencies and escape attempts.

Basenjis are known for being prone to separation anxiety, and they tend to be very loud. Sure they don't bark, but I've never owned a dog more likely to howl when distressed. A barking dog would be easier to accept that having a wolf next door, calling for its pack. They're also known to be very destructive when bored, annoyed, stressed or simply curious about something.
@ritzlarka
@ritzlarka 4 жыл бұрын
@@JWildberry J Wildberry J Wildberry Basenjis aren't inherently loud dogs and they don't howl. They may shriek or yip when startled or excited. They also are bred to function independent of their owner for hunting purposes which does not tie in to being anxious if their owner isn't around. And any dog bored enough can be destructive which comes down to training and providing an outlet. None of this negates the fact that most of the dogs in the video aren't good at being left alone, some are even neurotically destructive if not provided excercise and other mental and physical stimulation.

@@JWildberry so you're saying an animal under stress of some kind makes sound and it's not a typical day to day thing? That's pretty typical of most animals but they still aren't "howlers" like other breeds. They aren't bred to be incessant, they are bred to be quiet because they are meant to hunt alone in the jungles. If your dog needs attention that bad or is having anxiety issues then that doesn't have anything to do with the breed because it isn't what they were bred to be.
@JWildberry
@JWildberry 4 жыл бұрын
@@ritzlarka How can you say basenjis are not howlers when they're known to yodel instead of bark? That is a form of howling. When a breed has a common behavioral issue like the basenji does, you can't explain it away by saying it wasn't bred for it. It wasn't bred to be aggressive either, but that is a very common problem. As for stealing and destroying things, that's not even a flaw, that is part of the package when you get one. Btw, basenjis originally hunted in packs, so they're not bred to be alone. Quite the opposite.

Even dogs that are independent should not be alone for more than 4 hours. Not being able to go to the toilet for more than 4 hours is pretty cruel. Also when staying alone for more than 4 hours boredom starts to kick in which can leave dogs looking for new interests as your shoes for example! This can lead to a lot of misdirected frustration and anger with them as you can image. I can see you are responsible for asking and are looking to be as correct as possible in owning a dog. I would advise to save up a few thousand euro’s and when you have more time contact a responsible breeders to find a pup! In the mean time I would read some books which contain informative sections as well as pro and cons of the breed you are looking for and of dog ownership in general. Make sure to get your dog from a responsible breeder as many street breeders and pet shops tend to import young puppies from bad places but I’ll leave the research for you! Have fun on your journey to dog ownership!! ☺️

fan tar Hi! I think if someone is around to make sure your pup can go to the toilet and gets some attention he’ll be fine! I would ask the person in advance if he/she would enjoy to take care of the dog since he/she will spend a lot of time with your dog. Also to set some ground rules, you wouldn’t want to end up with unwanted behaviour! ☺️ I’m not sure if you are planning on getting a puppy but if you are I would recommend getting one during the summer holidays! Then you’ll have a lot of time to bond and train your pup with less external stress from school. Most probably you know this already but puppies have to go to out every hour in the first weeks because they still have to learn to hold their bladder. You are doing amazing on researching what breed fits with you and I think that is a very good and responsible step to keeping a dog for life! Good luck!

Then look up ways to help prevent separation anxiety, cause there will come points in your life where you can’t have your dog with you. At a minimum, you should train your dog to be comfortable by itself for a few hours. It will allow you more freedom to move about the world and your dog doesn’t stress (suffer from anxiety) simply because you’re outside doing yard work. If it’s a puppy, it’ll be a lot easier to train now than later. Conversely, if you can’t bring yourself to ever be separated, then that is fine, but a dog that goes everywhere with MUST be well trained and socialized with dogs and people, and be obedient to the letter. Nobody will tolerate a disobedient dog that size in their business. Remember, even a Service Animal can be told to leave if it is causing a disturbance outside of its specific service training. You should train your dog both ways, but your lifestyle should dictate which type of training receives more emphasis. Honestly, if it’s a Great Dane, I’d recommend focusing on training your dog to be okay on its own for a while. That size of dog WILL be encumbering to take everywhere with you, no two ways about it. Also, if an emergency happens and you have to be hospitalized for any length of time, your dog won’t be allowed to stay with you at all times. if it’s got separation anxiety, you can rest assured that it is terrified during those times of seperation.
@DarkKnightofHeaven
@DarkKnightofHeaven 4 жыл бұрын
The good news is he/she's just a puppy. Separation Anxiety usually (not always) comes from two things, a lack of consistency on the owners part or actual abandonment previously. We can rule out the latter so focusing on being consistent is best. To define 'being consistent' were talking about your schedule. You leave about the same time every day, you come home the same time every day. When your dog starts to expect you to be gone from 'this time to this time' he/she won't panic when you are gone, and just be really happy on those days off that you are home. After a while you'll be able to leave more easily whenever you want, because your dog will trust that you'll return. Toys they can chew on can also help. For very extended times away (Vacations and what not) having a friend they really like or a boarding/daycare facility they frequent can also be really good, though the latter has a price tag on it and requires research so you're leaving your dog with people who understand dogs and dog behavior.
