How to spend less money on gas? How to drive a car easily and safely? There is a direct connection between mileage and the frequency of maintenance services. Here are 10 brilliant driving hacks and secrets that will help you save gas money and drive your car like a pro.
TIMESTAMPS
- Why is gas so expensive? 0:54
- Don’t put the pedal to the metal 2:20
- Use cruise control on the highway 3:18
- Undergo servicing on time 4:04
- Turn off the air conditioning 4:58
- Make your route logistically efficient 5:47
- Don’t drive when it rains 6:34
- Monitor your tire pressure 7:24
- Remove unnecessary weight 8:04
- Keep an eye on gas prices 8:35
- Always stay alert on the road 9:11
SUMMARY
Why is gas so expensive? Because oil is? That’s right. Crude oil, to be precise. It makes up 72 of gasoline price. We pay the remaining 28 percent for distribution, refining, and taxes. The reasons for gas prices to rise are the weakening dollar, natural disasters and simple rules of supply and demand. Prices rise when demand is bigger than supply. Prices usually drop down in the winter when fewer people are traveling across the country.
We can hardly affect any of the things we just mentioned. But we can affect our choice when buying a car. Some cars are less fuel-efficient than others. But we still love them and want to have them. They are ultra high-end luxury cars and large vans and SUVs. Sports cars are already very expensive themselves and also require you to feed their turbocharged engines, which create more horsepower. If you don’t have a sports car, but paying for gas is still a nightmare, then you probably own one of the best-selling cars in America. Toyota Camry, Corolla, Prius and Honda Civic, Accord and CR-V. Give this video a “thumbs up” if we guessed it right.

As for the cruise control. When I'm using cruise control my car most often revs up when going up hill (gas guzzling right?). I so if you monitor your constant speed without reving on hills this has to save more right? 9 would contradict 10 in this sense.

@@trillyungwavy-gamingchanne6608 Turning off ac saves gas if you are doing it to avoid having to avoid opening a window. When traveling on the highway, having your window open creates aerodynamic drag and consumes more fuel than turning on the ac while the windows are closed. But if its not too hot, having your windows closed AND not using the ac will save the most fuel.

Here are 5 facts about this video: 1) Stretching something out just for the sake of it, without any worthy materials is a very poor editing choice. This video could have easily been under 5 minutes. 2) The tips mentioned here don't deserve to be called hacks. Please check the definition of that word. Giving useless, common sense tips, which every driver already knows doesn't qualify to be called 'hacks'. 3) Turning off the AC doesn't save 15% of fuel, but far less than that in modern day cars. Moreover, cooling a car isn't a luxury, but a necessity. A hot car will most certainly have a tired and fatigued driver, which is a big safety issue. Hence we either drive with the windows down, or with the AC turned on. Either ways we'll burn a little extra fuel. 4) Unless you're driving on standing water, with a depth of more than 2 or 3 mm, the drag caused by the fluid displacement will result in a very negligible amount of extra fuel burn. Drag caused by normal rainfall, is therefore negligible in terms of affecting fuel efficiency, as most public roads disperse the rainwater fairly well. Moreover, unless we are going on a joy ride, we can't really choose the time we drive out, can we? 5) Don't make a video just for the sake of it.

@mp4986
@mp4986 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rhaman68 Speed is NOT the cause of most accidents. Speed is falsely attributed to many accidents when other factors such as distraction, fatigue, poor road design are responsible. Also, "speed" is blamed for the accident in many instances when the vehicle was not even breaking the limit at the time. As for 50 in a 70 causing accidents, it happens many times when the difference in speed between vehicles causes bunching of vehicles or sudden braking.

Actually, driving in town with the air conditioning on does use more gas. But driving at highway speeds with the air off and windows open causes the air coming into your car to be trapped by the rear window and the engine has to work harder. Driving at highway speeds with windows closed and air on makes the car more aerodynamic and helps it to use a little less gas. In my car driving at highway speeds with the air on only makes a difference of 1 mile per gallon. Not a big deal breaker.

Running the A/C: My mechanic says that cars have become much more efficient in the past few decades. If you are on the highway, you engine has enough power that it doesn't cost much, if at all, to run your air conditioner's motor. In the city is a different story, where your engine has to 'rev' up to have enough power to run the a/c. But on the highway, it really doesn't cost you any gas mileage to speak of.
@shwt121
@shwt121 6 жыл бұрын
Alan Jezusko - you are absolutely right.......maybe 35-40 years ago the stress of an a/c compresser on an engine was about a 2-3mpg difference......since then the technology has managed to keep up with the modern engines diagnostics to the point that you cannot even feel the difference in the running of a cars engine when the a/c is turned on.

It doesn't cost much more on newer cars to run your a/c, but once you hit 40mph with all your windows down that causes drag and that in turn causes your engine to spend more gas fighting that drag.

I agree that they have become more efficient, but don't kid yourself, AC still uses gas. Together with other gas saving tips it can still save you money, not using it when you don't have to. ;)
@HR-wd6cw
@HR-wd6cw 3 жыл бұрын
In today's vehicles, running the AC has a negligible effect versus how it used to be. These days you might lose 1 MPG by using the AC versus the 10%-15% fuel economy loss you may have had back in the day. And running the AC at highway speeds (above about 45-55 mph) is more efficient than using the windows. Less drag. One thing about using apps to find cheap gas. In many cases, unless the savings are significant, or you're buying a lot of gas (like a truck, that could take 30-40 gallons) generally you end up wasting whatever money you'd be saving, by driving across town to save 5-10 cents per gallon. If there is a more significant difference maybe it would make sense, but try to time it so you're not making a special trip to the other side of town just to get gas either.

You are so right! Driving 10 mph below the speed of traffic is extremely dangerous, since other cars and trucks will be constantly changing lanes near your car. Also, at highway speeds, driving with the windows open causes so much turbulence and drag that running the air conditioning uses far less fuel.

I do most all these and a few more and have been using tricks like these for years to save gas and brakes.they do work or i wouldnt do them and will always do them 90% of the time.Some people think it's crazy or don't care know days just look around you on the highway and you can tell but doing these things do help save gas and brakes,specially with a standard transmission.like for example my '15 honda civic ex manual coupe, 2,805lbs,1.8L-16v sohc,13.2 gal gas tank,4.30 gear mpg is 28 city/36 highway,when I've drove it on 87 or 93 octane,the most I've pulled out of it is 41.0 mpg city,47.0 mpg highway.according to where I'm driving and that's East Tennessee and yes I could prove by recording it when I drive.brakes,I barely use them at all cause I start slowing down for stop signs and red lights way before by just letting off the gas and shifting down and same with cars in front of me ,you have to anticipate what people are going to do or what is going to happen it's really not hard and helps save brakes,gas and accidents.

Modern A/C systems don't use much fuel if the outside temperature is low. The A/C compressor is only driven when cooling is needed. One benefit of running the A/C: It circulates the fluid in the system, preventing seals to dry out, and in turn prevents A/C fluid to leak out. If you select to turn A/C off, it is necessary to turn it on briefly ( 1 - 2 minutes each month) to lubricate the seals. I never turn it off on my car, and my previous car never needed to refill the A/C fluid in the 15 years I owned it.

Additional hack to save gas: Press your foot down on the accelerator and the brake like you have an egg between your foot and the pedal. If you "stomp" on either ("put your foot to the floor") the egg will break - you are going to get worse gas mileage. You should push you foot down slowly on the accelerator, but firmly and steadily - you will not break the egg and your engine will receive enough gas to perform at peak efficiency. The same with the brake pedal. If you have to stomp on the break for a stop that you know you have to do - breaking the egg - you have wasted gas getting up to, and maintaining speed, for longer than you needed to. Ease up on the gas pedal earlier and let the inertia you've already built up (it's free!!) take you to the point where you need to apply the brake. Apply it earlier as you begin to slow, and with gradual increase of force rather than performing a stop that tests your seat belts. Believe me, this works. I have a 94 Camaro with a V8 so I have to save gas any time I can. That way I can "light it up" when I really feel like it....

If a gas station is close to you and in your way, always fill your car up to 35%. This should lower the weight of your car by probably 30 kilos/65 pounds. Maintain a fill of 10%-35%. The other thing to do is to use a MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor cleaner. A dirty sensor consumes more fuel, lowers you car's horsepower and accelerate less.

Every time you brake, you waste gas, by wasting the momentum already produced . You can brake less by coasting more, like to the next red light, or to your next stop. just use your momentum and brake softly when at the end of your travel..

Okay, problem with the way you talked about air conditioning. It uses a lot of fuel not because it puts a heavy electric load on the alternator and then thus the engine, but because its compressor/condenser is mechanically driven itself! When you turn it on that engages a clutch that locks the compressor's drive shaft to the pulley over it that's being spun by the engine. So it puts an extra direct mechanical load on the engine.
@johnbarron4265
@johnbarron4265 4 жыл бұрын
#10 is half correct. Yes you do want to accelerate as smoothly as possible (holding throttle as constant as possible), though using light throttle is not the most efficient way to accelerate. Internal combustion engines typically achieve their best brake specific fuel consumption at between 50% and 75% throttle and between 25% to 50% of redline rpm. If you can spend less time accelerating, and more time coasting, that will usually give you better efficiency. #9 is half correct. Cruise control is only more fuel-efficient on highways if the road is relatively flat; otherwise, the cruise control system will use extra fuel to climb hills and then waste that energy by closing the throttle completely when going downhill. It is a lot more fuel efficient to let your car lose a few mph going up a hill, and then let gravity pull you down the hill while either in neutral, or in the highest gear with very light throttle just to keep the valves from restricting air flow through the engine. #7 is correct, but not realistic. Driving with windows down is more fuel-efficient than driving with A/C on, at pretty much any legal speed, except for maybe trucks and SUVs. If you need to use A/C, it is most efficient to crank the temperature as low as possible, turn on air recirculation, aim the vents directly at your head, and set the blower fan as slow as you comfortably can. The blower fan uses a lot more power at high speeds than the A/C compressor. #5 is half-correct. The presence of rain gives you a valid excuse to travel significantly slower than the speed limit on highways, so you can cut down on aerodynamic drag big time.

If you have car that keeps track of active mpg. You'll notice that the difference between accelerating slow or fast isn't much different but the amount of time it takes to accelerate is very different. Also you can run the ac just turn off the compressor when taking off until you reach the speed limit, most cars will automatically switch off the compressor at open throttle which doesn't necessarily mean foot on floor, but more like take off conditions

I find that automatics still have a problem: shifting at the wrong time. For most people, the issue is minor. However in commercial vehicles and adverse weather, it can cause wheel spin, skidding and when accelerating out of a turn, because the trans upshifted too soon, it overreacts causing it to jolt the vehicle. As i drive a 23ft long, 10ft tall top heavy work van, these issues are pronounced.

Cruise control actually uses more fuel in a 4 cylinder honda crv unless you live somewhere that is flat and has no bridges that are raised because it will shift down a gear with most inclines now in a large v8 truck this is different. But regardless if you want to save the most fuel let your car lose small amounts of speed going up hill and then when you start going down hill don't be afraid to let your car speed 5-10 mph so you can use the inertia for the next hill

People who insist on driving 55 when the flow is going 70 are actually much more hazardous on the road. There are tons of reports and evidence showing how most people drive 70 whether the limit is 55 or 85. Video fail.

This isn't true, it's based on research on 2 lane country roads. Based in research on freeways, slower is basically always safer. It's thought that because people slow at intersections, even on country roads it's safer to drive slower.
@kennethhymering677
@kennethhymering677 5 жыл бұрын
@@joa8593 Nope, wrong! Slower is definitely NOT always safer! Doing 20 under the speed limit causes exactly as many accidents as doing 20 over! Merging onto a highway with not enough speed is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Still, I see it happen lots of times. Mishael53 is absolutely right when he says that it's best to go with the flow. As long as that flow is reasonable, of course. It is speed DIFFERENCE that is dangerous! Higher as well as lower!
@joa8593
@joa8593 5 жыл бұрын
@@kennethhymering677 Nope, that's old research that says average is best. Even research saying faster causes slightly fewer accidents had much, much higher fatality rates at higher speeds so they still concluded slow is safer. DoT is getting rid of the 85% rule and instead requiring much lower speed limits soon because slow is safer even when people break it and you have a mix of fast and slow. Besides, trucks are stuck at 55 MPH so you always have a difference in speed at anything over that.
@kennethhymering677
@kennethhymering677 5 жыл бұрын
@@joa8593 You misunderstand what I said. Of course it is better if we all have the same speed. And by the way, here in Canada, trucks can do the same speed as cars. So there is no speed difference! You are talking about lower speed limits, that is something entirely different. I was saying that when the speed limit is 55 on a highway, the guy doing 75 is no more dangerous as the guy doing 35! Actually, I would argue that the guy doing 35 is actually MORE dangerous, because nobody expects that! A truck coming up on the rear of somebody like that, doing 55..... At night look for cars, not lights. People do not drive with headlights on at all times. Do not drive in peoples blind spots. Accelerate slowly and try not to apply brakes. That saves fuel too. Manual transmissions can help keep people safe but it doesn't mean you should go out and buy one to be a little safer. Use turn signals even when nobody is around. Learn to predict peoples actions, I cannot teach you how to do this, you need to learn it on your own. You'll eventually learn to predict when someone is going to pull out in front of you or if they're going to yield properly. Maintain your vehicle and check it's fluids and brakes often. Just because your car's brakes work at the beginning of your trip does not mean they'll still be working at the end of it. That Maintenance goes for all parts of the car, wipers should be new, tires, suspension components. Brakes don't help if your car's wheels are not pointed down the road or if the wheel falls of or a tire explodes. Drive with traffic in cities, you wont save time by going faster, it's only going to use more fuel and make you less safe. Most of these people's videos are not very accurate and i basically just gave you all the pointers you'll need.

Low acceleration, 75km/hr speed, unload car, dnt drive in rain, use less AC, max ur tire pressure, dnt brake frequent, stay alert on d road, service regularly ( oil change, filter cleaning, plugs cleaning) keep fule minimum of 40% always (not lesser than that)
