I worked at Blockbuster when Wild Things came out on video. I had countless people complain they didn't understand the ending. I asked them if they watched the credits all the way through. Wait, do people generally consider The Orphan a dumb movie? I rather enjoyed it and thought that lead actress was phenomenal in it. If you watch it over again knowing the twist ending, you start to notice that the actress, who really is a child obviously, does these small little "adult" mannerisms every now and then which is brilliant in my opinion, because you realize they gave you hints of it through-out the movie... But that actress absolutely nails the adult mannerisms. Really great acting in my opinion.

The Doofy reveal in its own way elevated Scary Movie ahead of Scream for me which is weird. Having the cop be the killer, the reporter his accomplice, the Billy and Stu archetypes be silly high schoolers copy catting an actual serial killer and the twist that "there never was a Doofy" took what was fine about Scream and gave it a better ending. Sure it's riffing on Usual Suspects but I wasn't expecting a silent nod to Primal Fear. The ending somehow made what was a spoof of a satire on horror movies released 4 years ago by the same company actually better than the more serious send up.

In my opinion the original firday the 13th twist on it's own is just a decent twist. But when you add the fact that Jason became one of the biggest horror icons and is the villain in every sequel/remake. It makes it iconic. It's one of the only twists that will always live on. Because each new generation of horror fans will only know Jason and assume he was always the killer. And as famous as the twist is the series itself and Jason are even more famous. So it will continue to stay fresh for as long as the series exists.

Yeah, about that Friday the 13th "plot twist"...NO. You never even learn about ol' dead boy Jason until after you've met Mrs. Voorhees (who is never even mentioned until she pops up in the last act) and she talks about her son, so you do not watch the movie thinking resurrected Jason is the killer. At least, not when the movie came out. Only years down the line, after he'd become the antagonist in the sequels and people associated the films with him (even starting to call them "Jason movies") would anyone retroactively go back to watch the first one, assuming Jason would be the killer and then, at the end, be like "what the hell? It's his mom?" You can't really it a plot twist when it was never even a part of the movie to begin with.
@libradawg93 жыл бұрын
IDK, he made it clear that it's a twist in retrospect. Though he also said we all assumed it was a vengeful Jason, which obviously wasn't at all the case, and it's unclear what the intention even was. But seriously though, between two horror fans, are you sure it doesn't qualify as a twist at all?? Another horror movie even used it to trick someone into spitting out the wrong answer, and that was pretty awesome.
@bbwibb023 жыл бұрын
@@libradawg9 That is actually one of my least favorite things in that movie. I'd put Annihilation in this list, it's a very dull movie right until the plot twist, which was genius

Hey now! _Sleepaway Camp_ has some iconic lines! "Wasn't that nice of me, hmm?" "Why, of course! I believe there's a whooole bag." "Eat shit and die, Ricky!" "Eat shit and live, Bill." And of course "HEY ANGELA, WHY ARE YOU SO FUCKED UP?"

The Lego Movie. For roughly the first half, it seems like just a standard, "okay but nothing special" kiddie flick. Then things start going meta and gradually we realise that the protagonist is standing in for someone else. What at first appeared to be just a slightly silly fantasy tale turns into a touching exploration of the relationship between a father and his son. But it never loses that touch of humour which prevents it from descending into narm territory.

I think it was a better movie before the live action ending with Will Farley..kind of ruined it for me

Lol about Breaking Dawn... the way I describe it to people is that the only decent bit of the entire film series, is a bit that doesn't actually happen. Sums it up nicely.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d think this channel was paid to market these movies. This is like the 4th list with, “The Boy”, a movie I never heard of until WhatCulture starting showing up in my newsfeed.

Nobody who saw the original Friday the 13th back when it came out thought Jason was the killer. The audience had no idea who the killer was. Mrs Voorhees being the killer was such a surprise because nobody expected a sweet faced, middle aged woman to be an axe murderer. Jason was pretty much a non factor in the first movie.

Great list as usual! I actually thought ORPHAN was a very decent horror film and NOT dumb at all. WILD THINGS, while I agree is WAY over-the-top with its convoluted plotting and twists, is still very imaginative and almost works as clever parody of noir thrillers. I forgot Bill Murray was in it too!

Dead silence is maybe not an amazing masterpiece. But it's not a gory slasher film, it actually scares you with sound, atmosphere, a little psychology maybe, and that ending.... That ending is amazing.

Wild Things perhaps holds the record for most plot twists in one movie. And it’s certainly not dumb. Unapologetically sweaty and sleazy, yes, but not dumb.

I was a total mark for the SAW movies. I remember in the lead-up to 5 there were “leaked” pictures of the protagonist inside of that last glass coffin trap screaming in pain. It was very meta in that sense. There was a “twist” for the hardcore fans who got led astray by the leaks because he never even gets into the glass coffin, which ironically is why he dies.

Saw V was my first Saw movie and I loved it! I didn't see it coming and it was shocking.
