When using Roman numeral chord notation, lower case numerals usually indicate minor chords and upper case, major chords.

Hello. I just joined your Patreon at the $5 level. I discovered Jazz Duets while at a medical seminar in Vegas for 5 days. I had no guitar, but just looking and listening to the way you break down music theory was very straight forward and enlightening. Thank you for all your work and I look forward to reaching the best levels in my jazz improv. I’ve been playing the blues since age 13 after a night at Freddie Kings feet. I went home the following morning and figured out one position of the minor pentatonic from his notes swirling around in my head...and I was off to improv land. Now some 50 , or so, years later, I must learn jazz improv. I’m Dr Brad from Dallas and it is so nice to make your acquaintance.

In ex. 10, you said the chord built on the 7th degree is not a m7b5... yes it is. In key of C, for ex.: The 7th degree is Bm7b5 the notes: Intervals Notes 1 B b3 D b5 F b7 A What it's NOT is a Whole Diminished. There's only a b7, not a bb7. So you can't use the diminished ° symbal , because m7b5 chord, as you know is half diminished. You need a line through the circle for a m7b5 chord. If you're talking about the TRIAD on the 7th interval, THAT'S a mb5 triad. But we're talking jazz here, so m7b5 is appropriate. 🙏🏻🎸🔥 THANK KINDLY FOR YOUR LESSONS! I have one regarding your lessons: I've noticed from countless classic harmony text books, especially classical & jazz theory & text books (I played guitar by ear for 30 years before spinal injury 17 yrs ago; threw myself into theory a bit after that to notate my music. I'm new to jazz except drumming; I use my good hand to practice everything on My Piano app). It seems standard, that capitalized ROMAN NUMERALS stand for MAJOR chords (major 3rd interval), and lower case denotes minor chords (flat 3rd). Major scale/ Ionian Mode harmonized in TRIADS = I ii iii IV V vi vii-5 Do any of your students mention this? I know there's no actual standard in music: we're getting there... Cheers! And thank you! 🙏🏻🔥🎸🔥

Hi Nick from another Nick. I came from the 1970s Rock and Roll and there is a proliferation of the I -> III7 there. Jerry Garcia's Deal and Eric Clapton's Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out. It a very identifiable and soulful sound. I have now progressed to All Of Me and Georgia, and you have given me even more ideas. Thanks a bunch.

In the Sonny Stitt "I Got Rhythm" example, the bridge that is being played (at 7:18) is actually a substitution chord progression(in all probability 'spontaneous') with the iim7 being placed in front of the V7 for the first 4 bars - //Ami7/D7 /Dmi7 /G7 //C7 / /F7 / // Of course, this could be thought of as: //D7sus4 /D7 /G7sus4 /G7 //C7 / /F7 / //

Hey man, First of all those are great vids! I loved the different example you used to illustrate those fundamental progressions. If i might add a small opinion I found the notations V7/vi or V7/V (secondary dominants) more adapted than III7 or II7 as it illustrates the tonal function of those chords. What do you think? Thanks again for those great vids and for sharing freely all this knowledge. Best, Mat
@JazzDuets
@JazzDuets 5 жыл бұрын
thanks. when I am transposing to different keys on the fly II7 is more agile+ after a certain while we know the tonal function of the chords, so there is no need to write it in every every video. Thats what I think

Not sure if you'll ever see this, but it'd be really helpful if your video graphics had some sort of arrow that points to where the chord is in a given song. It'd be especially for people who are beginners at reading music. It gets really hard to follow which chord is being played in a given song especially when there's a moving bass line and the tempo is fast.

@JazzDuets
@JazzDuets 6 жыл бұрын
Saying someone is lazy is not constructive criticism. The videos takes many lovely hours.... I would never think about trying to notate a Jazz standard melody exactly as it was played- it is an absurd thing to do-as standard notation is so crude- it is just a guide. I might try and play it like Miles though repeating like a baby. That is a great thing to do. Have you ever tried that? ps. The video is about the chord progressions. Were they notaed ok for you?
