10 Facts Movie Theaters Don't Want You to Know

We all love movie theaters for the special feeling they give with fantastic special effects, complete sound immersion and the taste of popcorn. Would you still love them just as much if you found out their secrets movie theater owners don’t want you to know? We’re going to unveil 10 movie theater secrets.
In cinemas, many people can’t always keep their feelings to themselves and that’s normal. For example, a movie about cannibals called Raw appeared to be too hard to watch for a couple of visitors at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. The people fainted and one of them hit his head badly during the fall.
Digital devices can do everything on their own, and there are more automatic processes at a cinema than there were during the previous century.
Keep it in mind that in case there are some problems with a projector (the image is blurred, not centered, etc.), you’ll have to stand up and go notify a staff member in the lobby.
20% of the population, including Johnny Depp himself, simply can’t perceive those three dimensions. Harvard Medical School neurobiology professor Dr. Margaret S. Livingstone explains it could be due to stereo-blindness when eyes can’t see in 3D because of the way they are aligned.
If you love cleanliness that much, try to visit the cinema in the morning and avoid going there on Friday and Saturday nights when a lot of other people go out to the movies.

SUMMARY
-Theaters have to pay a lot to film studios in the first two months of distribution so they have to make their money out of concession.
-The cinema staff members who manage to prevent movie theft get a $500 prize.
-The younger generations buy a ticket when two movies start simultaneously, and one of them is not R-rated.
-A movie about cannibals called Raw appeared to be too hard to watch for a couple of visitors at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. The people fainted and one of them hit his head badly during the fall.
-One couple stuffed a truckload of food into an infant’s car seat and went to watch a movie. A girl from put some pasta into zip-lock bags and brought them into the cinema with her.
-3D glasses give you an illusion of being inside a movie and it drives your visual analyzer crazy.
-Even though a movie projector has to be programmed during the day, there’s nobody sitting in the booth when you watch a movie.
-A short break between two movies is not enough time for a cinema staff to thoroughly clean up a theater.
-Someone who loves to fight will always find a reason to do so. It could be that someone took someone else’s parking place, they talked on the phone during the movie, or someone is chomping too loudly.
-Thanks to security cameras, movie theater staff can spot and kick out couples that go too far on their “loveseats”.

Patrick Chubey I’m not exactly sure but my best guess is all hallways, I doubt they’re allowed in the theatre because that could copyright the movie but it’s possible they’re in the back and pointed down away from the screen, other than that they’re in all the hallways, the lobby, behind the stand and the entrance

The camera thing isn't true. I worked for Regal for years and yes, some very large, very busy theaters have them but it's not as common as this makes it sound. That's why you'll see employees walk the theater 2 or 3 times during the movie. Checking things out.
@717jeezy
@717jeezy 5 жыл бұрын
It's just an added expense for the theater to add on top of other expenses that could be done away with .. especially when you can just have your employees just check it out . Some theaters just have an attendant near the entrance in case you need them for whatever during large audience viewings.

We went to a Century Theatre, and had major laughs as the pre show touted the new state of the art theater. Unfortunately the projector bulb was out and we got 8 minutes of a blank screen. I worked at 4 different movie theatres and none of them had cameras in the auditoriums. Occasionally we would step inside to make sure things were going okay or if we suspected there might be problems, but that's about it. Sometimes when a sneak preview would happen the security hired by the studios may watch you from the projection booth or stand in the auditorium wearing night vision goggles, but that's about it. There might be some theatres out there with cameras, but it's probably not as many as you think. They are right about the projectionists, I'd say the amount of time someone is up there is probably less than 16 hours a week and they aren't running the movies, they're scheduling or cleaning.

As a movie theater owner, I can tell you the very first "fact" they list is wrong, After two months, the film companies still take some of the profits. While most film rentals decrease quite a bit after two months, some films remain at the same percentage, say 65%, for the entire run of the film. Most films aren't making much after 8 weeks, but the film companies are typically still taking about 35%, or so. For older films that are no longer in regular release, the distributors at least charge a minimum, even if it's $250. In over 20 years of theater ownership, I've never had a film company let us take 100% of the profits. Ever. Also, not EVERY theater has cameras on you as you watch the movie. We don't. We do have employees walk the theaters to check for issues, but we're not watching your every move. Not only would that be kind of creepy, it's dark. It would be pretty expensive to equip several auditoriums with numerous cameras that are capable of producing a decent image in dark conditions.

It’s worth mentioning that since they make all their money on concessions, theatres are very easily convinced to offer refunds. If you go to a theatre and something about your experience isn’t great, tell the staff. Or you can call and even sometimes email a representative that will offer movie passes to make up for the experience. Since the theatre doesn’t make much on the actual film, giving free passes will encourage people to come back and spend more money on concessions.
@jackpabich763

Yeah... only kind of. From working at a movie theater, we have had people rudely demand a movie refund for not liking the movie, despite sitting through the entire thing. If something is wrong with the film, come out immediately.

Okay, let me clear some stuff up because I work at a movie theater, Cinemark at least. First, we do check where you’re going, you will get turned away if you’re underage. We don’t watch you while you’re watching the movie, we check in to see how many people are in a theater occasionally but we don’t watch anyone. Piracy rewards (500 dollars as he says) actually aren’t awarded anymore. We used to get 200 but now we get nothing for catching pirates. We don’t care if you have outside food, do what you want movie theater food is better. 3D glasses don’t actually cause motion sickness, it’s a placebo. There is no booth in the upper area for a projector, not just no one in there, no booth at all. Even on busy movie nights (I’ve cleaned up on Star Wars multiple times which are the busiest nights) we have time in between to clean, the schedule makes sure for that. Fights don’t barely ever occur, in my 2 years I’ve never see one fight happen or heard of any fights. Also, there’s no cameras in the theaters, they are entirely private. Stay informed!

Truth - those seats, railings, armrests...are NEVER cleaned. I worked at a major theater franchise. We had a corporate manager coming in to check out the theater. So all of us had to work overnight one night to clean up the theaters. Even then, we weren't cleaning the seats. We were using black Sharpies to fill in any divots in railings and armrests. We were making sure that the walls weren't ripped. And looking out for any major problems. Now if that's the extent of what they're going to do when a corporate manager is coming by, do you think they're going to work as hard any specific day? Absolutely not. Yes we did have a cleaning crew come in overnights, but all they did was vacuum, clean the bathrooms, clean the concession area, wash the windows, and clean up any major spills in the theater aisles. So those seats you're sitting in and resting your head back in... Never been cleaned. It's enough to make you want to only watch Netflix and Redbox. After working in the theatre, that's what I do.

DeceptiveSmog yeah a couple theaters in my area seem excellent. They actually have leather couches for seats, which I imagine are easy to wipe clean real quick so I hope they do it lol I don’t know why a theater would invest in electronic reclining couches and not maintain them properly. Then on the other side of the spectrum I’ve seen theaters that I wouldn’t doubt share the same practices this guy is talking about.

Nah, we clean the popcorn poppers nightly and throw away leftover popcorn at the end of the night if none of the employees want it. Only time we've ever kept popcorn overnight was when a company bought out a couple of theaters and prepaid for 750 boxes of popcorn for their shows at 8am the next day.

at the theatre I work at we bag up several large bags at the end of the night ( we offer free refills on large popcorn/drinks) so if anyone wants one on the way home it is ready. all other left overs are bagged in big yellow plastic bags and stored downstairs for about a week. A local pig farmer comes and picks it up once a week or so for his piggies - they love popcorn.

The worst cinema experience I've ever had was in an IMAX theater. Back in Dec. 2016, we go and went to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on my local IMAX in 2D. So we got there and purchased two tickets (I'm with my mom) that says 3D on it, and some IMAX employee made an announcement that there will be a "reformat" to 2D. I was really confused because the website said 2D, and the ticket said 3D and that made sense. We went inside the theater, the IMAX intro played in 3D!!! Including the movie, I can't watch the entire movie in 3D without glasses. I went outside and told an employee (one of my embarrassing moments of my life) and I said to him that the movie played in 3D and maybe they are handing out glasses. I went inside the theater again, and saw the movie finally in 2D. I knew, an IMAX theater has a projectionist behind it. Now thank god that only the few seconds were in 3D, then a minute it became 2D. My knowledge that the employee told the projectionist that the movie is in 3D. If they can play 3D, why not make it 3D. The movie played in 2D by turning of the right projector (IMAX Digital). That is one of the worst moments of my life. And btw, we are allowed to bring any food inside the theater.

I always buy my own snack and drinks before going into the cinemas. I used to buy a BFF combo with a friend for $19 (two medium drinks and popcorn plus one snack), easy to pay $8.5 to share but then they increased the price to $25, not going to spend $12.5 for that, plus the popcorn now makes me feel sick. I work at Cinemark so this is my opinion on the list. 1. Yes that is obvious thought everyone knew that. 2. Lol that hardly happens anymore. Yes some people are able to sneak in. But definitely not often. 3. Yeah that happens too but most of the time it's obvious that they bought the ticket to sneak in and we grab them 4. Never happened at my theater. I know it happens in the example you give, but that movie RAW shows someone eating human flesh so yeah. 5. We have a bag policy that you can't bring in backpacks and stuff but we employees are chill about other stuff you have. 6. Personally I don't like 3D films. That being said whenever I have watched a 3D movie I've never felt this way. More of a personal problem rather than a movie theater problem. 7. While no there's no one up there we can change some things. But yes you have to come tell us 8. We have enough time to clean up and when someone spilled something we can usually take care of it in the time allowed 9. Lol never seen it happen yet in my theater, looking forward to it. 10. We don't have cameras in our theater at all, anywhere. So no on that one. Can't say about the more expensive ones through. They probably do

Thanks for the opinion and insight though I’m very surprised the snack policy isn’t in place as well as cameras.

Neuvation we are a discount Cinemark. So movie tickets are $3 each and some days $1.50. But since we are discount our theater dosnt quite get as much attention as a normal first run theater.

I've worked at a cinema too. for #10, yes there are no cameras usually, but staff can still watch audience from the projector room through tiny the tiny windows, or from the window of the theatre door. I've done it

When I was younger I did the R-rated thing. I would buy a ticket for a movie that's playing within 30 mins of the movie I wanted to see, then go mill around for 10 mins, then buy my popcorn/drink and by that time everyone that should watch me, has forgotten about me. Then I just walk into the movie I was there to see.

The title could almost be labeled as clickbait really, I did not see anything here that theaters don't want us to know. Still pretty informative but change the title.

I’m a manager at a movie theater and we don’t do a lot of these little tricks. We definitely don’t have security cameras in our auditoriums. Children going to R films is a big problem here so we have double and sometimes even triple ID checks. If movies are starting around the same time we will watch where everyone goes and we do a theater check to see where everyone is. I think guests think there is a projector person because we have lots of problems and I only find out after the movie when everyone wants a refund.

I used to work at a cinema. This information is not a secret. We don't hold any this information away from the public like, " shhh, don't tell anyone." The title seems to imply that we really had any dark secrets. Just ask anyone! The staff is human too!
@KAGE26
@KAGE26 6 жыл бұрын
And one more thing. I've also worked at three other locations and the information would very greatly to each. Sorry to sound a little aggressive it's is just the public forgets a lot that these are people and not robots. Most of them are in high school and this is their first job so they are going to be a bit inexperienced in a few things. So chill!

4:18. Some people cry if a family gets spit up and then reunite or stuff like that, but me, no. I only cried at a movie at Star Wars ep.7 when Han Solo died. Edited:Also when we went there at the beginning of that the projector was messed up and the movie started like a half an hour late and I was so anxious because it was my first time seeing Star Wars in theaters
