10 Fall 2022 Fashion Trends To Avoid | What To Wear
These type of videos are the ones I enjoy making the most because they do tend to create the most debate and discussion and I love that. I also appreciate that while runway looks generally aren't real life - I mean we can't expect to see most of these looks exactly like this in real life but they do dictate the trends we will be seeing in our favourite stores. They may be a watered down version of what we see on the runway but nonetheless they are definitely an interpretation of the high end designers. So I truly believe it's worth getting a heads up to see what not to wear because they last thing I want anyone doing is wasting their money on faddish trends that either don't flatter or simply won't last the test of time. So with that said I've rounded up 10 Fall 2022 fashion trends that I think we should all avoid and I've tried to give my reasoning why too. Of course fashion is subjective so I'd love to hear your thoughts on the trends I've featured in today's video. Thanks so much for watching and I will see you again real soon.
Leonie

I agree on sequins. I never understood the allure. Why wear tin foil? I think obi belts are good. If you like them, you'll get use out of them. Im not fashion forwards enough to use them, but if I found a telly good one on sail, Id get it. I love oversized sweaters. They are especially excellent if you still like wearing skinny jeans, because they blance you out, or if you want to wear a slip dress or something without looking too nice, because oversized sweaters are really very sexy. Its the big cuddly piece, and so the body parts that show always look more slender and sexier because of that. And they re so practical for when you dont want a coat but you need something. And the texture is always a plus. And NO!!! do NOT belt them!!!! youre going to look like a silly sausage. Belting things that dont come with a belt is usually a bad idea. Just looks like you are trying waaaay too hard. Just have the weather be the centerpiece, wear everything else simple and fitted, and you'll look excellent. I like cut out tops too. They are not a layering piece. They are a warm weather piece. I like a one shouldered top too. But I dont know how long this will all last. Still its been hanging in.

I make most of my clothes, so the patchwork has been a great trend because I get to dive into my scrap pile - so far I’ve made a pair of jeans, a jean jacket and a skirt, all from scraps! But I definitely wouldn’t want to spend on it: I love being on trend while essentially getting it for “free.”

I'm with you on the chunky knits. I bought a chunky cardigan with balloon sleeves. Fall is short here in Canada and we need coats early in the season. The cardi does not fit under a coat, limiting its usefulness. I agree with you on the other trends, especially the cutouts, brrr. 😄

Yes, exactly this. I live in Eastern Europe where winters are often bitingly cold so a coat is a must. I bought a beautiful balloon sleeve cardi after falling in love at first sight only to then find that no coat would go over it and it ended up taking up space in my wardrobe all season. I later took it to work in a separate bag to wear in the office. I’ve since bought a shacket with wider sleeves which will certainly do for Autumn/fall (US). So I’ll be giving those a wide berth. The giant sequins were beautiful to look at on your runway pics but can’t see myself wearing them ever. As with pretty much everything on your list Leonie.

@@bernadettehawes Funny coincidence, I also kept the balloon sleeve cardigan at work. Since I retired pre covid, it hasn't been worn, thinking of donating it.

I just bought a classic trench coat because they never go out of style. In the past I’ve had ‘trendy ‘ ones but they look dated so quickly. I think this applies to most of the items on your list. I think it’s fun to have some of these pieces if you’ve got the money and realize they will only look in style for a season or two

I had one trendy trench donkey’s years ago- it would have done nicely last fall and it was nicely made with interesting details. However, the fabric was so thin on the sleeves particularly that it got rips and lost it’s chic look. Definitely something to be said for getting quality core pieces like a trench.

I love large knitwear! Even as a short, petite person (I’m 5’0, 98 lbs). But I think this winter I’m taking some style tips from Selena Gomez’s character from Only Murders In The Building. She’s petite too and she’s made oversized pieces look so good! I also love statement belts. I haven’t worn them for years now, but I love building my collection slowly. They’re so fun and don’t take up too much room, and they’re easy to find then at thrift stores.

Yasss! Every one of these can easily slip into the “trying too hard” space. Japanese street style is newly on my radar, they seem to take pride in mastering a singular focus of handcrafted indigo, selvedge denim, deconstructed looks, sashiko needlework. It seems so much more authentic than our fast changing cravings. Thanks Leoni, smart video as always!

I think all these "trends" (that keep coming back in rotation every couple of years) have some potential to be versatile and practical. Of course this depends on the climate you live in, your fashion taste and your personal style. Maybe they could be a little bit too much for most people, however they can still look good on some people.

Oh my! You are really too kind! The fashion industry churns out these extreme trends to lure impulsive buyers and fad followers to spend money. When I look at all of these trends, I feel that they greatly diminish a woman's beauty, instead of enhancing it. For me it all looks clumsy and thoughtless, and the wearer appears to be thoughtless as well, unfortunately.

When it comes to knitwear, I'm in fact looking forward to this oversized trend. Maybe not as extreme as you showed here, but something more like a loose, thigh length tunic. Each year I'm hoping for a long loose sweater, preferably with a wide neckline, but it's so hard to find something like that. So seeing this trend here makes me hopeful ;)

I hate the oversize sequins! They remind me of when I was a kid in the early 2000s and those purses that had giant sequins were all the rage for like a year they got so popular that gas stations and stuff started selling them. They made these weird stretchy shirts that had the giant sequins on them. And I remember after a year everyone gave their purses to their kids to play with because they didn't want them anymore. So all of my friends all had sequin purses too because their moms gave it to them LOL I never liked them I always thought they looked cheap.

@@Thestyleinsider. I didn't even remember those purses until I saw the big sequins you showed and I had like a war flashback to those purses LOL I remember in the US petrol stations sold those purses for a few years afterwards. I just cannot see any type of big sequin and not immediately think it looks like you bought it at a gas station LOL I hope they don't catch on. But you're the third fashion KZfaqr I follow that mentioned the big sequins as a trend for fall ughhh

Like you I have recently come around to trench coats and scored a classic trench in an op shop - it's full length but lightweight which suits our milder NZ winters. I have a great bright orange blazer and same color pants,,tops, and skirt that will work well for Fall. The corset belts you show here are way too wide for me but I love three I have that are about 4inches at their widest...I wear them often and they are great on my hourglass figure to emphasize my waist.

Eek I’m a big fan of the oversized knits. Not full length but a cardi worn instead of a coat with a scarf, dress and boots/runners looks good, I think. Depends on your climate, winter is never too cold in the UK so it works here. Great video, as always :)

Some of these latest fads look more like costuming. Thank you for letting me in on what not to wear. My pennies go to items I can wear more than one season.

Love your channel, have followed you for quite some time. Agree and adore Karenbritchick too! However….the corset belt in theory is amazing. I have one on a slightly smaller scale and it is perfect for the bigger knit, blazer or something the requires a more substantial hold! The cut outs!! Give it a try. Not suggesting nipple covers and sleeves. Lol! But no scarves with it. Defeats the purpose. You would not wear it to work but maybe for a dinner, bar or nighttime event! Get crazy, give it a whirl!!! Thanks for your honest and practical advice. Money is tight. Don’t waste it on dumb trends that waste gas money and closet space! Love the top btw! Sleeves and pattern are spot on!!

Not big on jumping on the trends every season but patchwork pants I’m just loving right now haha statement pants have always been a staple in my closet so for some reason, I’m super drawn to patchwork pants. I’ve purchased 2 already😅

If I were wearing only classic styles and considering these to be basic these trends are less likely to work. I found many of these trends appealing and look forward to seeing their ready to wear versions.

I agree with most. Now corset belts i like. I think women who love to accentuate the waist , its useful. I had i the past i need it again, i might not going to get the most expensive one, but in medium range i will. The rest i am not interested at all, especially cut out tops. I like tasteful sexy cut out but when its overboard , to me looks more trashy than sexy . Have a blessed day🙏🧡

Great video. I am all about casual ams classic clothes (mum on a go), I think designers are bit bored after pandemic. In fairness I do have turquoise trench coat with bit of pleating, but I have it for years now, got it in charity shop for something like 10 e. It's still looks great. I am only planning to change buttons for something more modern and contemporary. With irish rainy weather I do tend to reach for hooded rainy jacket more. Btw I love your accent

I agree with pretty much most of what you have said from the perspective of building a timeless and long lasting wardrobe. But I would also say that there is nothing wrong with buying some of those styles from a high street store just for a season of fun, knowing that the item and the trend won't last for long. There are those who say fashion should be fun! Though generally I am all about quality pieces that last the test of time... I did go "oooohhhhh giant sequins!!!!"

I love the IDEA of the super chunky knit, but I’ll look like a linebacker wearing it, and there will only be a couple of days where I live that will be cold enough to even wear those. Right now, Wednesday promises to be (actual temp) 104F. Add a heat index to that, and it feels like Oh My Gosh!

I'm not much into trends. I like things I can wear for years. Even since my youth I have sautéed away from trends and there were some I would not have been caught dead in. I actually agree with with all of your choices here.

I agree on some of these but not the knitwear! If you live a cold place these pieces makes you want to cuddle up on the couch. It wouldn’t be a going out to bars outfit but for normal occasions. If its slightly long you can wear a black workout tights under (a black one without stitching)

Girl, please do not apologize at the start of your videos for having an opinion. You can have an opinion! If someone disagrees, he/she can disagree. They, too, can have an opinion. So tired of everyone being afraid of offending someone b/c of an opinion. This is fashion, for goodness sake. Please, please, stop apologizing. I love your videos and your sense of style.

a bit late to the party, but i'm with you on EVERYTHING BUT the extreme knits AND the corset belts (both of which look great on me, even @ 5' 3"). i think it may just be a matter of the individual's taste and style, but (my) obi belts (some of which were featured in the corset belt portion of the video) go with almost everything i own from dresses to tops....just have to style them accordingly...😉

I'm petite but I do like chunky knitware if it's the right shape and this winter, those coat robes may come in useful as thicker dressing gowns given that fuel bills will rocket.

Re oversized knitwear--I am tall and think I could pull this off. However!! Oversized sweaters are so large and heavy; they're pretty much impossible to wash and take care off. You can't put them in the dryer and it takes a very long time to get them to air dry. I find it hard enough caring for a normal sweater! I guess you could dry clean them...is that recommended? Most sweaters these days are of poor quality. I can't afford a designer version--the knock-off versions get stretched out because they are so long and heavy. The best sweaters I've found are from thrift stores and I prefer ones that are thin and soft (cashmere).

I agree, I don’t see the point of investing in a trend with puffy sleeves or other mon-classic details, like Burberry’s trench without a front last season. BTW, I like your checkerboard patterned top, I bought a sweater in a similar check, it’s updated, but still in the classic range, my kind of trend.

I'm tall, so oversized knitwear feels funky and cozy on me, as long as it's balanced. the same with the cut-outs. As long as they are well placed and balanced with the rest of my outfit, they can be cheeky or a touch of dangerous in a good way.
