World War Two is also a he!! of a lot better, watched backwards. People spend a whole lot of times capturing explosions in metal casings, then taking the casings to factories where they're disassembled then buried safely in the earth where they can't do anyone any harm.

If you watch the American Civil War backwards, it's about US citizens violently killing one another over the shocking election of a very tall zombie who emancipates the country from racial equality before everyone collectively decides that slavery is okay and that even James Buchanan would be preferable to a zombie in a stovepipe hat.

The Maple Films edit of The Hobbit is worth mentioning. It significantly cuts scenes that don't add to the story or drag out the run time for the sake of extending action scenes. So... no sub-plot with Sauron, no romance between Tauriel (who now has been reduced to a single line) and Kili, and Legolas' screen time is drastically cut. It does create a few plot issues, though.

Nice list! I've been in the fanediting community for 10+ years now, trying to help in small ways. I did a bit of dialogue editing on War of the Stars, but much more on his Silent Star Wars edits. To people looking for more, I highly recommend the following: - TMBTM's "War of the Stars II: The Future in Motion" (obviously) and Silent Film versions - slark's "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze - Detarnished!" (most fun I've ever had collaborating with everyone for an edit) - ADigitalMan's "Superman Redeemed" (very impressive mashing up of Supermans III & IV) - TV's Frink's "Ridiculous" Star Wars prequels - Adywan's "Star Wars Revisited" (of course) - Tranzor's "The Thing: Late Night TV Edit" (perfectly emulates the hard censored TV cut style that was partly frustrating, partly amusing) - Jorge's "Hulk Remixed" (tighly-paced and shortened version of the 2003 Hulk film) - Jack Marshall's "Star Trek Phase 2: In Thy Image" (Star Trek V reimagined as an unmade Phase 2 pilot) - Jambe Davdar/Jamie Benning's filmumentaries (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, etc...)

The Hobbit Tolkien Cut is superior to the studio forced trilogy, it cuts the movies into the proper telling of the 300 page book and gives you a tidy story in just under 4 hours I do believe.

Let us not forget The Thief And The Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut. I guess it's less of a transformation than a restoration, because different studios transformed this one with rushed animation to get it finished, while fans broke their backs to get it as close as possible to the epic it was meant to be. This is Richard Williams we're talking about here, the guy who make "bumping the lightbulb" a trope.

I've seen multiple 3-hour fan edits of the entire hobbit trilogy in which all three movies are condensed into one long movie. They cut out the unnecessary filler that was added and brings the story closer to that of the book. I found them to have better pacing and be overall more enjoyable to watch.

Howard the Duck: Re-plucked is fantastic. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Edits is also great. Superman: Redeemed does a great job combining Christopher Reeve's Superman 3 and 4 into a much better singular film. Adywan's Star Wars movies are must-sees as well. New Hope and Empire are done... he's working on Jedi.

LOST did not take place in purgatory. The island was the real world and everything happened. The reveal was that the "flash-sideways" is season 6 WAS purgatory and was actually a flash-forward to after they all died and needed to find each other again. Still stupid IMO, and that's why the fan-edit changes that. And there's still magic, but it's handled better. Thanks for the mention on the list, though! Much appreciated! - DriggyDriggs

In the world of fanediting, they're referred to as a restoration, or preservation because the end product seeks to be exactly what the initial release is. A fanedit creates something new that never existed by modifying it someway. Restoring something to it's original format may use fanediting techniques, but the output is not considered a fanedit itself.

Okay time for unmentioned personal faves- Batman Begins: The Dark Cut - removes lots of little jokes, changes katie holmes voice - Batmobile drives itself during the 3rd act because it's fucking awesome and fits in with the remote controlled version from the 2nd film. Adds a bit of dialogue from the videogame to help cover up the fact. Darkly Dreaming Dexter: takes the first season and cuts out most of the side characters silly stories, most of the focus is on Dexter and him catching the Ice Truck Killer, with a little Doakes for good measure. Indiana Jones: Skull Kingdom mystery: removes most of the silliness, Lebouf is 2/3rds less annoying, no fridge handled perfectly and no UFO ending. I I can't remember but I think some music was restored from earlier films to help it feel in line - a worthy follow up to a decent trilogy. Star wars episode III: I forgot which edit it was that I absolutely loved because I had a hard drive crash, but they condensed the obi-wan v anakin fight and pretty much omitted yoda vs palpy, they also removed "higher ground" so Anakin somersaults immediately after Obi-wan and gets cut up a a result of his rashness. There's no noooooooooo and I think most of the setting up of Ep IV is gone. Most ep III cuts are decent to be fair as they tend to trim Palpatine goading Anakin to bad things so Anakin usually makes the choices for himself. Final mention: Aztec's Silent Hill Restless Dreams: takes the first movie and cuts out sean bean, also removes lots of boring parts in the middle that slow the film down, the absolute kicker, you can pick between 2 endings on the disc - one is the good ending where Radha mitchell leaves town with her daughter and the other is a specially created Bad End. It turns a pretty crappy adaptation of a game with a faithful soundtrack into one of the best videogame adaptations submitted to celluloid (not including Takeshi Miike's Ace Attorney film)

The Original Star Wars Trilogy: The Despecialized Editions - A fan editor taking the recent, high rez versions of the original Star Wars films that have been drastically altered by Lucas over the last couple of decades and basically reconstructing high rez versions of the original trilogy as they had been when they were released in theaters by borrowing bits and pieces from various sources, removing the CG and returning the model effects, and removing the elements that drastically changed what fans loved about the original trilogy (such as Greedo firing at Han while in the cantina, because everyone knows Han shot only).

Jordan Hanzon edited inside out so it was just the "outside" scenes. It's 15 minutes long and is incredible.

There's a pretty decent fan edit of Star Trek: The Motion Picture called "In Thy Image" which tries to cut it down to its original length (2 "tv hours"),to imagine what it may have been like if it stayed the pilot for "Star Trek: Phase II".

The best one I saw was a re-editing of the Star Wars prequels. Basically only 15 minutes of the first film is included and the love story between Padme and Anakin makes much more sense.

The Star Wars prequel "Anti-Cheese" edits. These were cuts that were similar to the "Phantom Edit", but spanned the entirety of the PQ trilogy, changing the Neimodian and Jar Jar's voices and subtitling them with slightly changed dialogue so they sounded like credible alien instead of moronic comic relief, removing most of Anakin's stiff and cheesy dialogue with Padme, removing the nonsense of midichlorians, and even going so far as to remove the announcers in the pod race so the scene has a certain degree of tension and less comedy. The changes to the other two prequels are more minimal, but the slight changes do improve the experience. Sadly, as they can no longer be found (Thanks, Disney), it's hard to view and enjoy these great fan creations that are, in my opinion, the PQs that we, the Star Wars fans, really wanted... or, at least, the closest thing to them we could have had.

Agent 9 has a better fanedit of Prometheus called the 'Special Edition'. He adds in the Weyland TED talk, puts in some 'Alien' soundtrack, streamlines the story, and somehow makes Fifield and Milburn tolerable. It's a far better experience than the theatrical cut.

For Star Wars fans the "star wars anti cheese edits" are well worth looking for. All three prequels edited to perfection. Piratebay or some likely place to find them

That old Lost argument that isn't true. They weren't in Purgatory all along. Purgatory is just where we all wind up after we die, and it's sort of a bus station where Jack can meet with old friends before they all shuffle off to wherever they're going in the afterlife. That bit at the end is just wrapping up what is known to be true: everyone dies at the end of their lives. Where can I get my hands on Cosmogony?

Okay but the ending of LOST didn't say they were in purgatory all along. They were in purgatory for 50% of the last season, they emphasized over and over that everything on the island actually happened.
