About '69 took a used '68 Charger home to see if my mom was interested in it... she liked it, but Dad said too much money... metallic turquoise, white vinyl top, white vinyl interior... gorgeous... 318 automatic... but they weren't "fastest" even with the big motors because of the weight...

@@buzzwaldron6195 Thanks for sharing Buzz. In the early 90s, I almost bought a 1970 Charger with a custom paint job. Came with a 360 (had one in my 75 Dart Sport, so I knew that a 360 in a Charger wasn't correct). The guy didn't want me to take it on the highway. Too bad I thought. I did and it started to shake (tie rod ends?) and the motor had no guts for a 360. Took a pass on it of course.

@@charbon2004 - 360 came out about 1972 as an emissions slug engine, lasted OK, but low on power and a gas hog until 1993 when the much improved Magnum 5.9L./360 came out... I was shocked to see a '90 Grand Cherokee w/ 360 was still only rated 9 MPG city and 11 MPG hwy... Ford and GM had begun fixing their early 1970's emissions slug engines starting in 1976...

Judging these cars based on top speed is ridiculous. These cars were geared for quarter mile times, not running full boogie at Daytona raceway. The final drive ratio makes all the difference.

I totally agree! I had a 1969 Plymouth Suburban (Fury Station Wagon) with a stock 318 (230hp) 2 bbl with headers and 2 1/4" dual exhaust and factory 2.94:1 gears in an 8 3/4 open diff. It would top out at 135 mph and would stay neck and neck with my buddies Dodge Daytona Turbo Z which also had a 135 mph top end. It now has a 500hp 440-6 with an 8 3/4, 3.91:1 Sure Grip and 26" tall tires. It turns 12.9 sec. 1/4 miles. I've never tried top ending it with this set up and with the penalties these days, have not intention of doing so.

Hurst used 68 Dart GTS for the LO23 Hemi Darts and 68 Barracuda for the BO29. The top speed is related to the rear end, the tires and the body. My 70 V-code 4-speed Charger had a Dana 3.54 : 1. I installed a 8 3/4 with 2.94 : 1 and it did 60 mph at 2500 rpm. The top speed was never tested on the road here in Scandinavia. Superbird and Daytona Charger has the best potential for top speed of the muscle cars.

Totally agree. One of the greatest modern automotive designs on the planet. And with performance that equalled its styling. I still recall the first time I saw the movie “Bullit,” where Steve McQueen is at the car wash and the camera pivots to across the street where the bad guys are observing him from their black Charger. That moment where the camera paused on this car remains the most sinister automotive presence in movie history, to my knowledge.

As a street racer in the mid 70's in my youth. The 2 fastest cars in my area of central Ohio were a black 71 hemi cuda with an automatic and a 69 Camaro with the COPO 427, 4 speed and 4.56 gears. Dog dish hubcaps and behind the window on the pillar in blue was "KING KONG". The car was also black. I didn't even try those 2 and I was driving a modified 74 SD-455 Trans Am that ran 12.20's at Street Nights at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. My guess is those guys were in the 11's.

@@YeOldeTowneCryer Exactly man, only 37,344 66 Chargers were made and in 67 they only made 15,788. Here's something to put into perspective, there were more 68 Chargers R/T's made than all 67 Chargers ever made, and the last thing is, there were more 68 Chargers made than all 66-67 Chargers produced. So next time someone says something bad about the first gen, just say, if there was no 66-67 Charger, there would be no Daytona, no General Lee, no Fast, Furious, no Bullitt. As a boomer I was in my teens when muscle Mopars ruled Woodward Ave. Even in my small town, a guy could graduate high school and sign on with a local industry, and after a year or so have good enough credit to take out a loan to buy one of these cars. It’s no wonder a lot of us now want to go back to that era. But wishing will not make it so. Unlike the guys who quit their education at 18, I toughed it out financially to acquire some of the knowledge that enabled the USA to be #1 in that time - whether landing a man on the moon or building cars whose performance was attainable by 18-yo’s here but in Europe required an income in the millions to equal. It’s convenient to blame immigrants or communists for the abandonment of small towns like mine by manufacturers who either went under or sourced their components globally. This country bested the Europeans back in the early part of the industrial era, because doing things differently here was not looked down upon in the USA as it was by the aristocratic societies in Europe and Asia. Now it is the USA’s turn to regain its leadership through innovation, optimism, and the awareness of its younger generation that a well-paying career cannot be taken for granted, but requires a willingness to tough it out and compete on the global market, using America’s huge advantages in geography, industrial/military power, and most of all, its human assets. Our ace in the hole is that our tarnished system still offers opportunities unheard of among our totalitarian competitors. Unlike them, the common Joe still has a say. If we have learned anything since Mopars raced to the Vanishing Point, it is that isolation breeds bitterness, while innovation is what we do better than anyone. The other side of that coin is we can’t coast on past achievements, but must create our own. As Rocky would say, “Go for it!”

A fascinating video of MoPar muscle cars. Top speed is largely dependent on rear axle ratio. And horsepower, of course. A lot of these cars had the drag-pak, with 4.10 gears, which severely limited top speed - especially since none of them had over=drive transmissions. I had a '67 GTX, with the 440 and 4-speed, Dana 360 rear axle with 3.54 gears. It would do 150 mph - at least that's what the speedometer read, and it did to go 150. And the needle did reach 150. There was a lot of front end lift at high speed, which made me nervous, and I seldom pushed it past 135. If I was soft on the loud pedal, it would actually get 15 mph. Of course, I was seldom in that mood. I didn't get it for economy. I loved that 440, but always opined that I should have opted for the HEMI, which was about a $650 option. MSRP was about $3500.

No one expected my dad's '68 polara convertible to be a muscle car, but little did they know when he bought it, he had the dealer swap the drive train from a (coronet?) wagon demo that an older lady had bought from the showroom. She got the "standard" 383, trans and rear end from his Polara and in return, he got the 440 magnum from hers. A slight modification later to the six-pack carb, headers, and fully independent dual exhaust and he had the fastest car in the neighborhood when I was growing up in the 70s/80s. Unfortunately, it was ripped apart by the catastrophic failure of the front u-joint that dropped the drive shaft into the pavement somewhere around 50mph.

Coming back from Nevada when I don"t think they had speed limits in certain areas> i pegged the 150 MPH speedo. Doesn't mean I really was going that fast but probably close. Though it did cost me a kind of broken torqflite. But at the time the 5 year 50,000 mile warranty was there. Got new or more likely rebuild tranny form Chrysler at 46,000 miles😊

We should have bought big block motors by the crate load back then. Probably get a complete engine for $1200-$1500 actually I would have bought a bunch but I was 4 in 70’. I’ll never forget seeing all types of muscle cars running around, there was a 426 Belvedere that sat on the turnaround on my block forever. IDK who’s it was or where it went

The '68 Charger is the prize of the pack. Okay. Two things: The 426 hemi Mopars from the factory were disappointing for street racing. They had only average low end torque and needed to be specially tuned and adjusted by a mechanic who knew how. They didn't get going until after 60 mph and from stoplight to stoplight the 440s beat them, as did the big block Corvettes and several others. You left out one of the very quickest factory muscle cars of the era; the 1970 Buick Gran Sport GSX w/the 455 Stage One engine. It had 510 ft/lbs of low end torque for exceptional off-the-line acceleration. But the problem back then were the tires the muscle cars came with; not nearly enough traction to deal with the power.

I had a 72' Roadrunner where the speedometer went to 150 MPH and I had it bouncing past that number several times. It only had a 340 engine but was geared for high speed. Did great on straight roads not so good on curves, When I went to sell it a guy wanted to buy it for his sons first car and I would not sell it to him. I did not want to read about his sons death in the papers.

I had a 68 Charger with a 440 that did right around 150 mph on the highway. A Roadrunner challenged me and I would not let him pass my front door until paranoia from thinking about police dropped me down quickly. Virginia was no place to get into that kind of trouble. Also the narrator fails to mention rear end gearing which many guys went to the Dana 60 or something like that.

Back in the early seventies my brother liked Chevys. He started driving cars home from auctions for a friend. He happened to get behind the wheel of a 69 Barracuda coupe with a 340 4speed. Coming back on the Interstate he opened it up and quickly buried the speedometer. When he got home he bought the car and became a Mopar fan. I was with him on short stretches of rural roads where he would hit 150. I am not a Mopar fan. I use to drive a street/strip 69 Mach1 that would turn low 12s in the quarter.@@chadhaire1711

Lots of misinformation here. My 1970 Plymouth had a stock 383 engine auto trans & top speed 150 mph. 1970 was the first year to have the 150mph rally speedometer, the first year to have electronic voltage regulator, the first year to have side fender lights ( in lieu of reflectors). I had my speedometer calibrated at one of the AAA portable speedometer testing stations and it had exact readings. I had stock 3.23 differential. Of course the 383 was rated at 335hp, I installed an 8 bushing on the cam drive sprocket, double roller timing chain, oil cooler, Cassler headers, & Tarantula intake manifold. I did turn 13sec 1/4 mi. however, always ran out of fuel at the end because I did not install an electric fuel pump. Back in the muscle car era Plymouth was more popular than dodge & outsold Dodge every year. It should be noted that Chrysler-Plymouth rated the 426 hemi at 390 net HP for the insurance industry. You could get more bang for your buck with Mopar. Before the muscle car era you could get a little 1963 Dodge Dart with 426 Ramcharger or a 413 Ramcharger engine. Chevy, Pontiac, & Ford never had a chance.

WRONG..the NET horsepower of the 426 was 350, the gross was 425. The 383 was listed at 335 gross which is only 275 net, any V-6 can beat that today. No engines were under rated to fool insurance..total myth....they were OVER RATED with the fake GROSS numbers to sell cars. That changed in 1972 when all cars had to be rated NET. I dont think you even know what NET and GROSS means
