10 Fastest Passenger Planes In The World (2019): Most of the passenger planes in the world are not renowned for their speeds. When comparing them to jet fighters, these aircraft are like snails. However, this does not mean that these aircraft should be completely ignored in their power and speed. A majority of passenger planes range in between speeds of 500 to 700 miles per hour, some airlines have unique airliners that can go well beyond this speed range.

If they put Boom into this list - they could also have Boeing 2707 in it - at least a mock up was made before it got cancelled. But more realistic would be to take Boom out and only count in planes that really flew.

This list should have been arranged by cruise speed in Mach number
@cheungjackjackt02006
@cheungjackjackt02006 4 жыл бұрын
Cruise speed for commercial planes are currently limited by our wing technology.. cFor most modern planes that are still currently in use, cruise speed is usually at Mach 0.86. Anything faster than this will cause the air flow on the upper surface of the wing to speed up above Mach 1, causing shock waves to occur. This will put heavy stress on the wing, the frame, and will cause huge inefficiencies leading to bad fuel economy.
@mickeyg7219
@mickeyg7219 4 жыл бұрын
@@cheungjackjackt02006 I think it has something more to do with finding an economically viable material to mass-produce a passenger plane that can cruise at a supersonic speed. Boeing experienced this problem when designing the 2707, people know how to design a plane that can cruise at Mach 3 or more efficiently since the 60s. Only 2 aircraft that I knew of that can cruise above Mach 3 for hours without blowing its engines out, the SR-71 and XB-70, but there are few of them due to how expensive the material is. It seems that Mach 2.25 is the line where you can't use a "cheap" material if you want to build something that can sustain a speed above that limit.

I don't think the author of this video even knows the difference. The difference in mach speed for cruising is quite small among jetliners, except for the supersonics. I always thought the B747s had the highest max econo cruise speed, but perhaps the new Dreamliners and A350s are faster(?)...as it is, I notice the old B747s are typically blocked 15-30 minutes faster across the Atlantic than similar B777s, etc.

@@RoadCone411 that's correct. Normal cruise speed for a 747 is up to Mach .86, while test flights with 747's have even proved that the aircraft is capable of doing 0.92. compared to A350 or B787 types, the max speed in normal operation might be equal. (They are listed with max Mach numbers of 0.89) So in my calculations, the 747 is still the fastest passenger aircraft, as long as there are passenger versions in service :(

wow, that was a ton of wrong information . The Convair 990 was the fastest subsonic airliner, while the 747 has a higher cruising speed than the 777, 787, and A380, with the 747SP being the fastest of the 747 family. The DC-8 and 707 had high cruising speeds than most commercial jets today. new generation commercial jets were not built for speed. Economics rules these days or you would have had a replacement for Concorde long ago. Now a good tail wind can turn any jet into a record breaker. I flew a JetBlue A320 west bound once from California to NY and the screen gave a hefty 630mph reading. So all you just saw was highly incorrect

In the 70's I was invited to participate in the Boeing SST program concerning titanium bearings. I advised my company to turn it down. Looking at the numbers and the opportunities for profit I concluded that planning a day for flying was pretty much the same whether you were flying a little faster or a little slower. Getting to the airport and getting ready to fly as well as the arrival time and necessities were still the same so taking a little off the flight time was insignificant and I found the additional expense not justified. Apart for the supersonic Concorde, the fastest subsonic planes ever built were the Convair 880 and 990, but they were not commercial success, as they carried less passengers and needed more fuel than competitors such as the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC8. In 2001 Boeing proposed the "Sonic Cruiser", about 10% faster than other planes, but no one was interested, and the project was dropped. Airline compagnies don't care about a 15 minutes shorter travel time, what matters most is fuel efficiency...

Well max airspeeds for (subsonic) commercial airliners is very close together. the 1248kph listed here for the boeing 787 was archieved with a record fast jetstream as a tailwind, so meassured relative to the ground (groundspeed) the aircraft indeed traveled with over 1200kph (which is faster than the speed of sound), but the true airspeed (the speed relative to the air around the aircraft) never exceeded the max cruise of around 930kph. so this video is a bit absurd. would be the same if you title your granny the fastest bicycle racer ever because the got hurricane scale tailwinds.

I was flying London - Venice back in the 70s when the pilot came on air to tell us that we were being overtaken by Concorde. However, as we had a jetstream tail wind of over 400mph, we were travelling at almost the same speed relative to the ground. Our flight time was just over 90 minutes.

Passenger aircraft do not travel supersonic, their wings are not designed for it. Wings for supersonic aircraft are short, stubby and thin for a reason, supersonic aircraft are shaped more like darts than planes. At supersonic speeds, normal wings lose lift as the shockwaves seperate the air from the wing surface, effectively stalling the plane, the nose dives, it goes even faster and it gets worse from there. If you’re going supersonic in a passenger aircraft, you are having one really bad day.

When I was a kid, my family and I went to Chile. We were flying in a British Airways 747-400. And I remember very well that the few screens on tourist showed 582 MPH as cruise speed and 660 as top speed. 660 MILES PER HOUR. This was 1996. I didn't really get how fast it was until I learned to convert miles to kilometers years later. I'm guessing we had tail wind to achieve such top speed... Since then I haven't been in a place that reached that speed.

Both the Boom Supersonic and the Tu 144 don't count- the Boom Supersonic is vaporware and the Tu 144 crashed so often it was pulled from service before it could be called a commercial airliner. Top safe cruising speed, or Vmo, for a Boeing 747 in level flight is about 614 mph or 0.90 to 0.92 Mach at 35,000 feet. Top speed for an Airbus A 380 in level flight is Mach 0.89 at 35,000 feet, which is the Vmo, or maximum safe operating level speed for the A380. The claim of Mach 0.96 for the A380 is for a shallow dive. This is a structural speed limit, not a level flight speed limit.
