I’m with you on the resin mix issue. I ordered a Leonardo in Brooks Primary Manipulation 4 and all the pics showed a great ratio of all the rainbow colors and mine is almost entirely lavender. The resin is beautiful, but it’s not what I thought I was ordering. So I totally understand how you feel about your Esties.

That is the exact reason I haven’t yet bought anything with the PM material. I’m so nervous I’ll get one I don’t like! Doing this video pushed me to go ahead and sell that Tortoise Estie. I may replace it in the future when I can go into a store and pick one. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels that way! I thought maybe I was being silly!
@Quiney08

@@gingerpeachy Not silly at all. It's hard not to fall in love with the examples they show. And for my PM4 pen, it was even worse because initially, they sent me the wrong nib size, so I had to send the pen back and I absolutely loved the mix of colors on the first pen they sent me. When I got the correct nib size, it was the almost entirely lavender one. And I couldn't ask for an exchange because the pen was all sold out. They had to track down the other customer that got my nib initially. Luckily, I see a lot of people making pens with PM4, so I'll eventually get another.

This was SUCH an interesting video. I am new to this area of stationary. I bought myself a cheep fountain pen with cartridges off Amazon 2 years ago and never really looked into things further. I have only started seeing the different options in pens and INK!?! Well that is where this went from a fancy tool to a full blown obsessive hobby! Now I am getting a new pen or two a month, and new ink all the time!!! It was really helpful to hear not just what you would not buy again, but WHY you would not buy them. Personally, I LIVE a metal pen, but might have been turned off them hearing that someone had problems with it. You being so transparent on WHY it is not your favourite helped em understand that it might be something I like even if someone else doesn't I am still trying things out and learning what I do and do not like. If you are ever looking to offload those shimmer inks, hit me up. I would love to get my hands on any of them!

Pens like that Esterbrook - Leonardos, Montegrappa (any pens with swirly designs) are a gamble!! When you get the perfect one, you feel like your life is complete. When you get a bad random pattern...your heart sinks and it feels like it was not worth it (even if the pen still writes beautifully), but for me, pens are 1) aesthetic & 2) writing experience. I feel that if I don't love looking at and holding the pen, I might not even write with it. Pens that have splendid nibs and write beautifully but have sub-par aesthetics can work for me if they look classic and beautiful in general (like the custom 823).

Totally agree with you on the metal pen thing, I much prefer the feel and lightness of acrylic/plastic/resin bodies and sections - if you love the nib, you can just screw out the whole section and put it on a Preppy, Meteor or Prefonte body, they all have the same section and nibs :) Also pretty sure JetPens has the Herbin Larmes de Cassis Ink in stock if you are still looking for it :) Thanks for sharing all your views on the pens, very informative 💕

I am so glad you talked about the issue with the Esterbrook and the material not looking like how they advertise. I had to return two Benu pens for the same reason. There were weird clumps of color and the material wasn't distributed evenly. I think that these types of pens would have to be looked at first before I would ever order online again. I consider that kind of thing a defect. It's not being picky because these pens are not cheap. I am totally with you on the things you have pointed out that I have not been mentioned in other videos. There is one pen in your collection I think it's the candy nougat.. that I wonder if it would have the same problem and you just got lucky... wondering your thoughts on that one?
@gingerpeachy
@gingerpeachy Жыл бұрын
I am glad I’m not the only one! There is a level of leeway that has to be given to all of these pen makers. They pour resin into dark molds and have little control of exactly how it comes out. I can see where they can’t afford to throw out every one that comes out differently from the best one. And, it wouldn’t be easily feasible for retailers to post photos of each pen individually. And truthfully, just like some people love “defects” in leather, some people love the variation in materials. The guy who bought my tortoiseshell Estie loved the things I didn’t like. So I think we just have to determine how much variation we are okay with. For instance, I just got the Benu Talisman Sakura. The main thing I was concerned about was that it had enough pink. Thankfully the one I received did have enough, but if it hadn’t, I may have exchanged it. I know this is a tough thing! Some pens I have been initially slightly disappointed in, but over time I’ve forgotten what those small things were. When I’m not seeing pictures of the perfect sample model constantly, it’s easier to appreciate the one I have. And then some of the defects I can’t get over, so eventually I just need to come to grips with that and sell the pen. The wonderful thing about small makers like Little Pen Designs is that the Candy Nougat pen was commissioned. I signed up to have one made. Because of that, Joe sent me photos of it as soon as it was done. If I didn’t like it, he would have sold it to someone else and made me a new one. This one isn’t 100% perfect, but I still love and adore it, and I am able to look past the little clump of yellow resin together and appreciate the pen as a whole. Another small maker I bought from allowed me to choose a different material entirely because the first one didn’t come out as I imagined. They are always able to post the ones someone didn’t love, and someone else will love them and buy them. I also recently made a purchase from Appelboom that’s on pre-order. I emailed to ask if there was any possibility I could see the pen before they shipped, because it was kind of expensive, and Joost emailed me and said that I could just put in the notes of the order that I would like to see photos of the pen before shipping. I had never before considered this to be a possibility. I don’t think I would personally make that request for every purchase, but certainly for bigger purchases. So you can always ask a pen shop! The worst they can say is “no,” and then you can go ask another pen shop the same thing. The other way I’m kind of dealing with this is that if I decide I want another small-maker pen and I don’t have a specific one in mind, I’ll just keep an eye on their IG profiles and choose from pens that they’ve already made rather than risking it with commissions! I also hope to get to a pen show one of these days. You’re right, this is something we don’t talk about much in the pen community, and I do think it bothers some people more than others. But it’s worth talking about!

I love these vids. It’s always so interesting to see how people’s tastes differ. I love metal pens and mine are some of my faves in my collection. I dig my ebonite ones and the substantial plastic/ acrylic ones. I find that when those plastic ones feel too light they don’t appeal to me. The issues you mentioned with the colors and aesthetics of your Esterbrook pens are totally valid to me. Those aren’t cheap pens, I’d be sad if I got something that wasn’t a good representation of why I bought it in the first place. That’s why most of my leather journal covers are second hand. I bit the bullet only two times with a couple of the known makers out there and was PISSED because what I got wasn’t at all what I expected. My ink I’d never buy again if I had to do it over: Pilot Irishizuku Fuyu-gaki. It’s a lovely orange, I love orange, but it’s so blah. It has nothing interesting going on. The whole line is pretty blah to me, TBH. Maybe if I liked blue ink, they have pretty blue inks in that line, but blue is not for me.

Splendid video. Although I felt a little stab in my heart hearing you weren't happy about the Lamy Safaris :). I love these pens (I have 21 of them now in different colours, and more are on the way), but then, the three-point grip works perfectly for me. I've also started collecting Kaweco Perkeo, who also has the three-point grip. The only bad thing with these pens is that they seem to dry out faster when writing with them. If I spend more than 10-15 seconds thinking about what to write next, I have to put the cap back on to avoid spending time getting the ink flowing again. But they write beautifully. Later I want to try Diplomat Magnum, which has much in common with the Lamy Safari, with a three-point grip and ink window. I've never used shimmer ink and probably never will. Like you, it's not because I find them ugly. But I only write with fine nibs on my pens, and even sheening ink sometimes struggles to come into its full glory on the paper within the thin lines. And since shimmer ink also requires a bit more maintenance, I don't see the point unless I get a pen with a broad nib in the future.
@gingerpeachy
@gingerpeachy Жыл бұрын
I WANT to love Safaris - I really do! But every time I ink one up, I end up not reaching for it because I think about those sharp edges hurting my fingers. But they seem to work well for most people! And I truly love their versatility and nib options. The ability to change a nib in an inked pen in 3 seconds is incredible. I agree about the Perkeo! Mine has a wonderful nib on it. And the grip is a little more comfortable for me. I haven’t had a lot of issues with it drying out while writing, but I do find that most snap-cap pens dry out in my pen case faster than screw-capped pens. And you’re right - shimmers and sheeners don’t show their best selves in fine nibs, usually. I love to look at them but don’t love to use them, for the most part. Currently I’m super happy finding wonderful jewel tones and shading inks! Thanks for your kind comment! 🥰

Holy cow you said my name right. Hahahaha thank you for the shout out and I'm so excited to watch this video! Your Plaisir is so cute! I feel like I understand what you mean about metal pens feeling hard. It's my one bit of dissatisfaction with my Lamy 2000 - that metal section. I have some extra Lamy nibs I'm never going to use - I should see what size they are and if you'd want them. (They're probably EF.) I feel like "objectively nothing wrong" with the pens was sort of the theme with the pens I wouldn't repurchase. There were a couple stinkers, but mostly it was because they were just slightly off for what works for me. I think I'm going to have to make a video of inks I wouldn't repurchase. 😂 I live in Louisiana, the land of Geaux Tigers and Boudreaux and Thibodaux jokes. Lots of French names around here! So I was hoping you pronounced your name like we would here! Same for Lamy 2000. I had one that someone borrowed and damaged the nib. I sent it off to Dan Smith and it was the MOST WONDERFUL nib I owned. But I just didn’t use the pen because of the grip! I would ink it up and it would sit in my pen case. So finally I sold it. I kinda regret it, but I know it’s probably getting a lot more use elsewhere. I don’t know if I’ve tried a Lamy EF, but I’m open to it if you feel like they’re smooth! YES please make an inks video! I just finished setting up my Col-o-Dex with all my ink swatches, and I feel like I could’ve added a couple to the list, but these are still the top ones I wouldn’t buy.
