Sunset Overdrive looked incredibly unique for it's time IMO. It was 2014, not 2018, and Sunset Overdrive clearly set itself apart stylistically and gameplay-wise. Still one of my favorite games.

I think the overarching theme here, is that most if not all of these games are unique and fun takes on things. Games I would've loved. But there is a reason we have COD 15 and Mario 17. People as a whole don't like new things. They're scary

I spoke to a Vampire: The Masquerade Dev a couple of years ago and he kind of felt that Activision screwed them on the game. The reason the game was released in such a buggy, clearly unfinished state was that Activision wanted to release it at the same time as Half-Life 2 so they could publicise that it also ran on the Source engine (which was also part of the problem) Then when the game flopped they turned around and said "What did you expect? It released the same day as Half-Life 2".

I didn’t even realize Prey 2017 flopped. Sad to hear, such a phenomenal game.

Prey is not only the best immersive sim, it’s one of the best games to ever exist.

The Evil Within 2 was definitely not advertised as heavily as the first one was from memory. I'm pretty sure I didn't know about it until it had already been out for a month. Also slight correction. Sunset Overdrive released in 2014, which was a very opportunistic year for that type of game and was heavily used in Xbox's marketing.

Prey is one of my top 5 games of all time. That game is a masterpiece. It does take a little bit to get into it but once the game flips everything upside down on you the game grabs you and pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Great story, great environments, tense gameplay - I’m very surprised Prey didn’t sell more. It’s an amazing game that more people should play and if you haven’t played it yet you’re totally missing out.

Yeah the gaming world is definitely filled with a lot of hidden gems nowadays and sadly good games don't get as much marketing because of lack of resources

The Pillars of Eternity series is one of my favorites! Those were my first isometric RPGs and I still love them. Looking forward to seeing what they do with Avowed!

Prey is easily in my top 5 favorite games of all time, too bad that because it flopped we may never see an actual sequel to the game. I really love Prey, and I hope it gets more love. If you can pick it on a sale, I recommend it, it gets really cheap, is a no brainer.

I’m really surprised Kingdom’s of Amalur wasn’t on this list. Not only was it an amazing game but the behind the scenes stuff with the studio that made it is so weird.

Enslaved was one of my favorite games when it came out. Such a fun adventure and I really loved the characters and the futuristic take on an age old allegory. Prey is definitely on my list of games to play but I feel for Arkane who begged to name it something else, but I feel like it’s assumed relation to the 2006 game of the same title is why it flopped. Prey (2006) WAS a heavy action FPS and, while they were both sci-fi, functioned nothing like Arkane’s vision for their project. Awesome list as always, love the perspective and context you give for gaming history!

Enslaved is actually one of my favorite games of all time. The nostalgia I got just watching that 1 minute of gameplay almost made me want to shed a tear.

I can't express how important "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" is to me. Such incredible environments, great character development, and fantastic sound design. I adore that game so much.

Should also note that Vampire also was using the 'new' source engine for half life 2 ... but instead was given one of the beta versions so the engine in jank because it's the incomplete engine. Activision also upped the deadline to such an insane degree that they were trying to cram all the stuff in at a break neck speed. Which is why when you play it, half the quests seem unfinished and much of the gameplay seems like there should be more in certain areas. They had to strip things to a minimum.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, criminally underated

It took me awhile to get to it, but I literally just finished playing Prey last night, and couldn't believe how good it was and that I waited so long to play it. I was shocked to see it here on this list.

Enslaved is probably one of my favorite video games ever. I play it every few years and it is so sad that not many people have had the fortune to play it. Definitely, worth your time

In regards to Pillars of Eternity 2, I think the market was just oversaturated with crpg's by the time it came out.There were just too many options all at once. I know when it was announced I was playing Divinity, had pathfinder on my wishlist, and had the first PoE still to play. And I feel proud that I am one of the 72,000 people who bought Bloodlines when it released. I remember getting out of Santa Monica and just arriving at the Sabbat ambush downtown where Nines saves you when I read Troika had gone bankrupt. I was quite confused, as the game had just come out, lol.

Words cant explain how much nostalgia I felt when blur was the first one. I loved that game so much as a kid and I would always play it with my friends

For me it will always be Sleeping Dogs. Might have done better than most games on the list but underrated and deserves a sequel

Part of the reason why Prey (2017) flopped was that people expected it to be a reboot\ sequel\ remake of Prey (2006), which was a completely different game, so when word got out that Prey was not Prey, a lot of people got disappointed and ignored it.

Prey is honest one of my all time favorite games, I recommend it to anyone who I think might me interested bc it deserves the love.

I used to work in a target electronics dept for years and I can tell you when it comes to the first Mario and rabbids games success came down to the fact that it was often on sale for $15-20 and parents/grandparents not knowing it's not a traditional mario game bought it up for their kids instead of mario odyssey that was always at $60 and never on sale. To them it's a $20 mario game or a $60 mario game, which are you going to get?

I'm 56 years old and can honestly say I've been a gamer since I was about 10 with the very first arcade games. I've never stopped playing so I've seen a lot from the first home computers and consoles to VR. Enslaved is one of the most memorable games i have played in my life across all platforms and genres. the evolving story and relationship between monkey and Tripp, is so involving. the voice acting is so on point and the story Arc gripping. I think it was ahead of its time. as a teen I LOVED the crazy Japanese TV show Monkey Magic, so was already versed in the legend of the monkey King. although the show and the game bear little resemblance. a crying shame it didn't get a sequel, would have been an instant buy for me. If there's a game that needs a high quality reboot, it's Enslaved. I think the scene is ripe for it, got to be a sure thing if it's done as thoughtfully and thoroughly as the original was.

I think one of the main reasons Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines failed upon initial release is that it was horribly broken and buggy. The opening cinematic showing your 'turning' was out of sync and missing several key animations/effects, and there were game breaking bugs that would corrupt save files, result in endless dialogue loops, etc. It got reasonably good reviews but the average player experience was extremely frustrating. It became a cult hit because underneath all of that was a very good story, excellent voice acting, and interesting game mechanics, and the community worked to patch that game for literally ten years. These days by some magic you can buy a patched version that has the unofficial community patch in it, and isn't really what the game looked like at launch (but it's what Troika wanted it to look like). They usually have it on sale for very cheap, highly recommend it to those who've never played it.

So happy to see Sunset Overdrive somewhere! its one of my favorites from all time and I still have hopes of a sequel someday

Gravity Rush was one of my all-time favourite games series. Such a beautiful and artistic game with wonderful storytelling and world building.

I loved Enslaved, loved the world, characters and the story. I've played it a few times and always wanted a sequel, gutted it was cancelled

Definitely for me the best game that flopped was Lemnis Gate. No game has ever bent my mind more. A turn based, time travel, first person shooter, strategy game, it’s impossible to even describe to people how it works but it is an absolute beauty of a game. I just remember after playing it I would be stuck thinking in the games logic and I wouldn’t think of time as linear in my normal life. I think it’s a game that really helps expand the way you strategize about things in real life. I wish it had gotten enough attention and had a better matchmaking system to make sure you had comparative skill levels in a match but alas it just never was able to get a big enough population for the game to actually stick. It’s just sad that I will probably never have that experience again

So my theory on Mario Rabbids is back when the first one came out there were like 3 decent switch games BotW Rabbids and Bomberman. People were looking for a game to pick up for the new console and they bought it because it was the first Mario game on the console. The second game which i own and agree is a very good game came out in a time where a lot of other good titles also came out and had been out.

Gravity Rush 2 was so good! I loved that game. "Flying" by falling everywhere, and the different areas all looked great. It was a really game to explore for the hidden goodies in. I also have to back up the System Shock 2 shout out. A friend of mine turned me onto that game back in the 90s, and man, was it ever excellent. I'm really hoping it get a proper remake/remaster treatment.

As someone who absolutely loved my time with both The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, I'll always be saddened by just how little recognition Shinji Mikami got from making such fantastic horror titles! Classic RE4 definitely had a lot of influences for these games (obviously basing on its main creative lead/head alone)... and even the remake of RE4 honestly takes a whole lotta cues from the mechanics in The Evil Within games. And not saying that's a bad thing at all. I just wish more people could have seen the potential of The Evil Within as another survival horror franchise worthy of competing alongside the likes of Resident Evil. Part of me feels like both games came out before this current era where people are just so thirsty for survival horror games that actually have mechanical depth and challenging difficulty.

Great video! If I could nominate one additional entry, it would probably be “The Order: 1886,” a gorgeous and fun early PS4 title that just kinda vanished without much fanfare. Wish it had launched the franchise that the studio definitely planned!

Played Enslaved like a month ago for the first time on XboxSS, I bought it cuz it looked cool (and I also remember seeing it somewhere like 10 years ago and wanting to play it) and it took me by surprise, I can't believe I didn't play it before.

Playing Prey right now and absolutely loving it. I have no idea how it slipped under my radar. Some of the best level design ive ever played

Blur was a fantastic game. I worked in retail at the time and if I remember rightly it released certainly in the UK within weeks of another great racing game called Split/Second. This was a similar arcade racer where you could use the environment to give you an advantage. At the end of the day there's only so much money to spend on games so customers ultimately had to choose one or the other.

I really enjoyed both of the Evil Within games and like that they made the sequel different from the first with the mini-open world elements. Outside of that, Enslaved and Heavenly Sword are two games that were criminally overlooked and deserved a sequel. Also, and I think I'm alone in this, but WET merits a mention too.

I’m playing through prey right now, definitely super underrated! I wish there were more side quests involving live NPCs, the game world feels very lonely but I get that’s kind of the point.

The modding community has done wonders with Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines, adding missing content and a host of quality of life improvements, among other things, realising a lot of the potential. Also Prey was great, such a shame to hear it flopped, got it on special on Steam a while back and played the heck out of it, fantastic premise and very cerebral to boot!

Gravity Rush 2 was such a big upgrade from the first installment it blew me away! The setting, all of the explorable areas and collectibles you could find by shifting gravity accompanied by the beautiful soundtrack and amazing cell shaded graphics all made for a very nostalgic feeling game but one that stood out on its own as a force to be reckoned with… or so I thought :( Really hope by some divine powers we’ll get a sequel someday.

I played Enslaved at launch and it kept me engaged until the end credits, which is rare for me. Surprised it didn't sell well.

There are so many good games on this list: Sunset Overdrive, Blur, Gravity Rush and Enslaved were so great! Maybe Kameo and Titanfall 2 would fit this list as well, but I'm not sure how they sold exactly...

Enslaved is SO underrated in my opinion. That’s always my go to when someone wants an older game that they may have never heard of.

I'm glad you mentioned that some games may break even and succeed, or may not meet certain expectations. There was a period for example that involved the words "Capcom Test." Which was they would test a games viability based on another games success or failure. They would then either attach that to a game that had nothing to do with the one actually being graded on success/failure, and oftentimes had absurd sales expectations like with the Devil May Cry series. If a game did succeed, like Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, it resulted in the questionable rail shooters being released on the same platform ie not another RE title with the mindset of the wiimote controls coupled with the combat/movement style of the acclaimed title. As an aside, I very much agree on PoE 2. That genre requires you to dedicate yourself, they are not pick up and put down titles. I played Divinity OS 1 and I have yet to go to 2 despite purchasing it because I know I don't have the hour-hour time to ensure I won't drop it down the road and have to start over. While I didn't play through Pillars myself, I wasn't overly impressed by what I saw despite some of my then favorite KZfaqrs at the time supporting it. Just kinda bounced off it for some reason.

I absolutely agree that Sunset Overdrive is an amazing game! It was part of my xbox bundle and because we moved I had nothing else to play but I loved it so much! it was one of the funniest games i´ve ever played and i wouldn´t even know to regret not play this amazing game.

Blur was such an incredible game. It had some balancing issues but the gameplay and visuals were phenomenal. There's never been anything quite like it. I still dip back into it every now and then. I wish it had gotten a sequel.

Wow. Earthbound only sold 140k copies originally. I’m proud to say I was one of those owners. I thought the game was awesome, and the big box with the players guide and stinky scratch and sniff cards was really unique and cool at the time.

i absolutely love gravity rush 1 and 2. i remember my cousin told me about the first game and i took a chance with it and fell in love with it. i would love to see a part 3, but after watching this.....i can stop holding my breath.

10:21 I bought Sunset Overdrive from a local used game shop for $2. Holy hell it is really fun! I love how the world feels and how characters interact with each other. And the amount of fourth-wall breaking is immense. This game needed more love

Sunset’s issues might have also been heightened by the poor launch of the XboxOne. Prey has a big backstory behind the game. The original Prey was a fairly early 360 game that was a bit of a cult classic. A sequel was announced and as more information came out it was highly ambitious. It was supposed to come out 3-4 years (maybe even more) before the second Prey finally released but the ambitiousness of the project kept causing problems and delays. They eventually scrapped the game and said they weren’t going to make another. Then almost out of nowhere, probably because of Dishonored success, the IP was handed to Arkane and they fairly quickly released the newest Prey. Which, while great, is pretty different from the original and VERY different from the planned sequel. All of that probably contributed to the lower sales.

Enslaved was such a fun game. I absolutely loved that game when it released.

Loved Gravity Rush 2. Don't even know how I ended up owning it. Never heard of it but it was so unique. The movement system with changing gravity was so cool. It was fun flying around the clouds and doing stuff like falling upward or sideways through the clouds into floating cities.

I still playthrough Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines every couple of years. It's an amazing game with a lot of jank like you said, but that jank is defiantly apart of the charm of the game. Speaking of things you've said, now that you mentioned Bloodlines I'm going to have to reinstall it again.

Binary Domain is one of my favourite games that sold abysmally bad. And it deserved a sequel cause the story was top notch

I played Gravity Rush 2 early this year and still one of the most memorable game I've played, the world is unlike I've experienced, and the thrill of manipulating gravity is captured so well by the developers, such a shame that the game hasnt got the attention it deserves, gotta be in my top ten favorite game of all time.

Evil Within 2's first perhaps 1/3 of the game is some of the best horror I've played in a very long time. The open world town area where, exploring it and actually being scared for your life due to strong monsters and jump scares. The game sadly gets far more narrow, but its far superior to the first game and argually one of the best horror games over the past 10 years.

I really enjoyed the Mario and Rabbids games more than I thought I would. A lot people I've talked to about the game weren't even aware a sequel existed.

I didn't know about the "Evil Within" games when they released until I got the time to play both, until this day I have no idea how "the evil within 2" didn't sell or wasn't loved as much as the first one. It was a huge improvement in every aspect.

Prey is seriously one of the best games ever, imagine how different Arkane's trajectory would have been if Prey had been a huge hit

I think Number 9, The Evil Within 2 kind of shows the difficulty with determining actual sales figures when companies have very little incentive to disclose specific digital sales. EW2 looks tot have sold about 1.5M copies on Steam alone, it also sold 43K copies on PS4 in Japan in a few days, being the 3rd best selling game, so it did okay. A comparison is Evil Within 1 was released in 2014 and only 2% of it's sales were digital. The difference between 2014 and 2017 when it comes to digital sales might as well be 100 years.

For me, it's God Hand and Urban Reign. God hand still got some attention later on but Urban Reign never picked up traction. It was an absolute multiplayer blast! Having a friend's Glenn hang your character upside down and punch their balls into oblivion, was a memory you can't forget.

Pillars of eternity(I didnt get to play deadtide) was probably my favorite rpg dvinity styled game even comparing to baldurs gate, it had such a rich story and unlike most of those games, you can truly make your party with custom characters and feel like you have a story with them. The game is just incredibly dense that after I got to a certain point halfway I think I made a mistake and had an urge to make a new character I just didn't have the motivation to start over so i kind of just hard stopped and haven't picked it up then.

Honestly Prey hooked me from the get-go. The first couple minutes were a little weird and slow... but it immediately turns things on it's head the next second. I'd already played both Dishonored games previously and loved them, so I knew I'd at the very least like it... I wasn't expecting to fall in love with it

Gravity Rush 2 was pretty good. I loved flying to other islands. I think it was just a bit too open, lacking a little direction and a slightly limited scope story - but really cool to play for a while. The perfect game for a demo, to let people taste it’s coolness.

Sunset overdrive: Such a gem. i bought the console with the game included. I remember the other option was Fifa or something shitty but boy, am I glad I did. enjoyed it so much.

I LOVE the evil within 2! Exploring the small town was so fun. I go through it every now and then and just love exploring. Also, enslaved is an all time favorite of mine. The voice acting is top notch. Zooming in when monkey crashes through the last enemy is still so cool.

Prey was SO good. The Mooncrash DLC was just as good as the campaign. It was more like a separate game entirely. They used the same general mechanics, but turned it into a roguelite.

Mario + Rabbids :Sparks of Hope has now been revealed to have sold 3 million copies, which is said to be on par with the first year’s sales of the original. The slow sales are theorized to have been caused by people waiting for steep discounts, which are well known to happen with Ubisoft titles.

Enslaved and Sunset Overdrive are both stellar games. I cannot understand why they didn't sell more.
