I grew up on Calvin and Hobbes. They always cheer me up when I'm feeling blue. Mouse Guard looks amazing and has been added to my tbr.

So many of my friends do not read graphic novels, only book books. So, with that in mind I went ahead and had a mission of getting them into comics. I gave them my copy of Killing Joke to read and my copy of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, to show them just what comics can be and all of them that read both of those got deep into comics after because just how great both of those comics are. Even if you do not care for kryptonians or Supergirl as a character, or if you just know nothing about them Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow is such a great entry for anyone.

Well I have some criticisms of this list, particularly the last part. The only one I will not critique is Ultimate Spiderman as you are spot on and accurate on. First and Foremost the Killing Joke is not a good place to start. For one it is very dark and may turn off causal fans and not leave a good first impression of Batman. Secondly, this is not the Joker Origin. Yes the origin presented could be one, but the book itself even lends the idea that is not a true back story. Joker Himself at one point says if I have a background I prefer it to be multiple choice. Year One, or Long Halloween are far better starting points than the Killing Joke which I feel requires some more familiarity with the Batman Lore. I have major issues with Civil War. It is written by a write who puts shock value and grandiose scenes over characterization and formal plotting. I would not recommend Mark Millars work at all, as all it does is puts spectacle first. And that's all Civil War is. Things happen way to fast, there is no proper build up to the events in the story. Yes you will probably say the road to Civil War, but that is not the case and just filler material. The actual story itself should contain the necessary ingredients to tell its tale. And also Millars characterizations are not accurate and off the mark.Everyone acts reactionary which is bad characterization for Characters like Captain America and Tony Stark who are much smarter than what they are in Civil War. Also the plot hole of the Super Human Registary act not even being in law, but Cap being arrested for violating it is silly. Now Superman. First of all you use the common misconception of Superman Being Over powered and out of Touch. To be honest, All Star Superman shows a very overpowered Superman in it. He creates whole worlds, he is super intelligent, super powerful, so its ironic your complaint about Superman being over powered, but you recommend a book where he is extremely over powered. IT works yes for that story, but there is still a invalid aspect to your argument. There are plenty of Superman Stories where he is vulnerable and not powered and in touch. Man of Steel By John Byrne, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? By Alan Moore, For the Man who Has everything? also by Alan Moore, Superman Birthright by Mark Waid, and many more. Superman is not the simple one dimensional character that people think he is. Those are unfortunate ignorant misconceptions.

Vatuu sounds so cool! I'm going to read some of it! Mark Hamil did an Amazing job reciting part of the Killing Joke on KZfaq! Have you seen it? I'll have to look out for All Star Superman too. I have some of Superman Rebirth where Superman has a kid. Its pretty good.

Glad that you enjoyed The Killing Joke and welcome to the world of graphic novels! If you want to stay in the Batman universe, read Harleen by Stjepan Sejic or The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. If you want to stick with superheroes read Marvels: The Remastered Edition by Kurt Busiek. And if you want to step outside of superheroes and read something entirely different, check out Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 by David Petersen!

Technically, Civil War isn’t a graphic novel. Graphic novels are stories made and written for 1 single release. Civil War is a trade that contains multiple issues within the story
@DragonArmyBooks
@DragonArmyBooks 3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that graphic novels can also be multiple comics re-released in one bounded book, or novel. 🤷‍♂️

@@DragonArmyBooks yeah, there are in my opinion, a few exceptions like Three Jokers that I would specifically call a graphic novel. It was all written as an intention to be 1 big story, but was released over 3 months in 3 individual issues. Graphic novels typically just have a more definitive end where the continuity could essentially end there, at least within superhero stories

I don't read many graphic novels because I honestly don't like how they depict women (though some, like Pumpkinhead, are great). I do however read a lot of manga so I'll share a few I think are great for beginners, that also have great female characters: Yotsuba&! - suitable for all ages, the daily adventures of a very innocent but intelligent 4 year old girl. Very funny. Fullmetal Alchemist - two brothers who've lost their mother try to get her back through alchemy then spend the rest of the story trying to undo what they've done and make reparations. One of the greatest. A Bride's Story - the story of life in 19th century Mongolia as we follow a young woman into the family that she marries into. Slice of life, incredible artwork, great characters and historical accuracy. Paradise Kiss - a coming of age story and a romance about a high school girl who becomes a model for a fussy young designer. Attack on Titan - set in the far future, the last bastion of humanity is besieged almost daily by gigantic human looking monsters that eat whoever they catch. This follows the story of three young people who join the corps to fight them, find out from where and why they come and if there's any hope for humanity. Very graphic violence, rough artwork, brilliantly plotted.
